>>60716755

I never knew this was a fan favorite until these threads started showing up again recently. It's a damn good choice, but not one I would have expected. That banjo though.
>>60716437
I just realized, I think they're kind of my /fa/ icons.
>>60716889
>Talking about getting distracted by the smell of butter popcorn, and eventually getting some sent to them
I gotta hear this now.
>>60716962
It's a kinda unusual song from them and it sounds really great. I like the synthy live version even more.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmFW2Z0v9J8
>>60717188
It happened in North Carolina I think. It was an outdoor show and the popcorn was really strong. People ended up sending them a bucket.
>>60717332
I've never heard this version before. Love it.
>>60717188
>>60717369
Here's the vid https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ac-UET46TJs
Goddamn it. This took place 20 minutes from where I live. It sucks that they only play in Raleigh when they open up for bigger bands like Paramore and Fun and play shorter sets. The only times they place in NC are in Charlotte and screw traveling 3 hours. I know this is bullshit complaining and I know lots of people travel even farther just so that they can see them play
I wish they would play at the Cat's Cradle in Carrboro like they did a decade ago but I think they're too big now to play at that venue.
>>60717332
Anyone know who the synth guy is on this?
>>60718322
I feel that man, I'm near a major city and I don't think they've been around in 4 or 5 years. It's a bummer.
>>60718322
This video is pretty good, anon. Not bad.
>>60718322
Oh wow. Funny seeing that again. That's when they opened for Fun. I saw them before in DC, but Fun. got rained out and girlfriend got tickets for NC to have a make-up date to see Fun. Nate Ruess ended up fucking up the lyrics to one of the song.
Then in Norfolk the show was in a club and a lot better. Too bad i broke up with said girlfriend after that. She wanted to leave after a 2 hour drive and wasnt gonna have that.
>>60718693
>that Norfolk setlist
Not bad at all. But, opening for Fun, though, eh. I'm not sure I wouldn't have left after T&S. Depends on how far I drove. I might have stayed just in case T&S came back for some reason and did a song with the headliner.
>>60718808
That's what happened when I went to DC. Got through all of Tegan and Sara's set and then the rain came. Ended up leaving after about 2 Fun songs. 2 hour trip I don't feel wasted. 4 hours to get to NC, fun roadtrip.
They did almost all of Heartthrob, excluding 2 songs, and it was perfect.
>>60718929
That sounds pretty great all things considered.
If they were to open for someone else on their next tour, who would you want it to be?
>>60719420
If they could do a co-tour with Matt and Kim, that might possibly be the funniest show ever.
>>60719484
>>60719484
I wouldn't have thought of that but that does sound like fun.

I was hammered the first time I saw this and I was completely caught off guard. Finding out it was made by a well known comedian didn't really help.
>>60719420
I would think T&S would headline over Ladytron. Maybe I'm wrong. Either way that sounds pretty good.
>>60720051

I wonder what it would be like to tour with him, aside from him being hammered constantly.

>>60720472
I think you're right. T&S seems more popular than LT.

Yeah. It would be a good show though. For some reason I'd really love to see them play with Interpol or Ted Leo. I don't know why but I would jump at the chance to see that show.

That's awesome. I can't wait to hear it.
>>60733191
I think it will definitely electronic as Heartthrob. I don't expect a radical re-invention.
>>60733191
>>60733340
Basically this. I think it'll be similar to Heartthrob in the sense that Sainthood had some banging rock songs akin to the Con (Hop a Plane to Northshore as an example). If their instagram is any indicator, this album will have more guitar in it than Heartthrob.
Personally I'm such a fanboy I don't think it's going to disappoint me in any way. I'm also excited after the record drops and they announce tour dates. I'm still beating myself up over missing the Let's Make Things Physical Tour with Waters and the Courtneys.
>>60733656
As long the songs are great it doesn't really matter what style they are. All I'm hoping is that they will keep the songwriting standard high.
>>60733707
And lyrically I don't think they've ever disappointed. We've just got to wait and see what it is LP8 is going to sound like.
But oh man, I'm so excited.

Holy shit.
>>60733191
>any predictions on how it's going to be? similar to heartthrob?
I hope not. By that I mean I hope (and doubt) it will sound too much like the last album. They never make an album that sounds just like the last one, so I think LP8 will sound about as much like Heartthrob as Sainthood sounded like The Con. No way it sounds as different as Heartthrob sounded to Sainthood though. That was the biggest transition they've ever had between albums.

Back In Your Head
The Con
>>60738478
Basically you're The Con era fan.
wait i'm baffled why there is so much community on here for this band. their music is generic, derrivative, soulless, and not performed or produced very well.
they don't come off like particularly interesting or pleasant people, and their buzz-band fame is long-gone.
so what's the appeal? can't you guys do a few minutes of research and find some independant pop acts that actually produce music worth listening to?
>>60738841
I'm a diehard everything of theirs fan. The Con is my favorite of their albums at the end of the day, but my choice in music videos is merely a coincidence.
>>60738931
>their music is generic, derrivative, soulless, and not performed or produced very well.
We'll just have to disagree there.
>can't you guys do a few minutes of research and find some independant pop acts that actually produce music worth listening to?

Alright
>>60738931
>their music is generic, derrivative, soulless, and not performed or produced very well.
Really? Totally disagree with you. Also: derivative of what? Name bands that sound like them.
>they don't come off like particularly interesting or pleasant people,
You definitely didn't watch some of their interviews & videos with their banter.
>and their buzz-band fame is long-gone.
They don't play the buzz-band game, pal. This band exists since 199fucking5. How do you think they survived that long without a strong fanbase and good music?
>so what's the appeal?
The appeal is that their music is genuine, catchy, well produced, inventive, moving, funny, and so on. You can hardly find more genuine artists than T&S.
>can't you guys do a few minutes of research and find some independant pop acts that actually produce music worth listening to?
LOL. Do you think that we listen to T&S only? It's up to us to decide what music is worth listening to.
I have the feeling that you listened to few seconds from a couple of their songs and decided that they're not good. Instead complaining about them, why don't you actually listen more of their music? I can recommend you some specific songs if you're interested.
>>60739275

On a different note let's keep the conversation going.
>what was the album you listened to first?
>what was the song you listened to first?
>when was that?
>How big is your physical collection, if you have a physical collection?
My first album was If It Was You, the song was And Darling, and I listened it one week after Tegan and Sara were nominated for "Everything is Awesome".
Records/Vinyls - The Official Vinyl Collection (TBoA to Sainthood), a signed copy of Heartthrob, Alligator LP, Closer Remixes, Get Along!, Live at Zia Records (both colors), and Guilty as Charged/I Run Empty.
CD's - If It Was You album advance, So Jealous album advance, Alligator 5-track CD, Alligator Extended Remixes.
Aside from other CD-singles & album advances, I'm looking for the Saints Live LP and a first pressing of So Jealous, which are super expensive. I let a TBoA album advance slip through my fingers four months ago and I'm still beating myself up over it.
I should probably post photos. I'll do that eventually.

All digital.
>>60740497
>what was the album you listened to first?
The Con
>what was the song you listened to first?
I Was Married. When the first previews for The Con came out in early 2007 (which was when I discovered them) I heard a couple previews for a couple songs on the record, I think they were probably the singles but I don't remember. So I think I heard the first 30 seconds or so of Back In Your Head and The Con, and that sold me on them. I got hooked immediately. So when the album came out that summer, I got the CD and the record without having heard a single full song of theirs yet. I put it on and the first song is of course I Was Married. I fell in love immediately and I've been a huge fan ever since.
>when was that?
Summer of 2007, when The Con was released.
>How big is your physical collection, if you have a physical collection?
I've got all the CDs, all the records (sans the UFLO record), and some of the DVDs. I have some of the demos and b-sides as well, I'll have to go through it again and see what all I have. This month I plan on filling out on pretty much anything and everything of theirs I don't have yet.
>My first album was If It Was You, the song was And Darling, and I listened it one week after Tegan and Sara were nominated for "Everything is Awesome".
I keep forgetting for as diehard a fan of T&S you are how recently you became a fan. That's awesome, bro. God, how long ago was that nomination anyway? That Lego Movie couldn't have come out that long ago.

You should, man. I'd love to see it. Just know that if you post a photo of that signed copy of Heartthrob that I'm going to get very jealous and sad. I would bend over backwards and jump through rings of fire to have some Tegan and Sara autographed merch. God damn, I've been a diehard T&S fan for going on 9 years now in a couple months and I have nothing to show for it. I'm happy for you that you have that, it's a treasure. Just that. I have it on a shelf but have yet to open the book and flip around the pages
>>60740903
wow so you started from the very "beginning" when listening to their discography. My initial intention was to do the same but I just opened up the folders (I torrented all their stuff first to make sure I liked it, it's how I justify piracy) and picked an album and song at random. It just happened to be And Darling.
>>60741139
Do you own just their regular albums or do you have their EP's and remixes?
>>60741244
Well yeah the Con is such a brilliant album but this is the first time I've heard that the hook for the Con was I Was Married.
Yeah I don't talk much with other T&S fans but it's funny how into them I am but how new I technically still am. I had to look up the date, their nomination was in December-ish of 2014. I started listening around then.
Pics will come soon-ish. If not, next Monday x3 thread.
>>60741295
>>60741779
>Do you own just their regular albums or do you have their EP's and remixes?
All their regular albums + few covers + various non-albums songs. I have just one remix (Alligator remixed by Holy Fuck).
<---- various non-albums songs
>>60741779
One album that I didn't listen yet is Get Along. I usually don't like acoustic music: would you recommend this live album?
>>60742055
Forgot to mention: many of those various songs are actually B-sides of their singles. I don't like duplicates, so I saved them in one folder (the A-sides are on their albums anyway).
>>60740903
>starting their discography from the beginning and going chronologically like that
Impressed. You're a better man than I.
>>60741779
>Well yeah the Con is such a brilliant album but this is the first time I've heard that the hook for the Con was I Was Married.
I'm not surprised. I assume for most people the hook was one of the lead singles from So Jealous/The Con/Sainthood. I Was Married was the first song I listened to start to finish, so it wins that distinction for me by default. I guess technically the previews are what hooked me, but to this day I don't even remember what songs they were for. I only assume it was the lead singles, but I don't know. Officially though, I Was Married will always hold the mantle for being my first Tegan and Sara song.
>Yeah I don't talk much with other T&S fans but it's funny how into them I am but how new I technically still am.
Same here, man. We are out there though. I have two other close friends who would say they are fans if you asked them right now, but neither of them are diehards like me, so I can't really talk to them at length like I can with people here. I did introduce them to T&S though, so they caught on pretty fast. Do you have any other friends who are fans?
>I had to look up the date, their nomination was in December-ish of 2014. I started listening around then.
That's what's up. Man, I will never forget the months leading up to the release of Sainthood. It's hard to remember any other album that I was that excited for the release of. It was fun for me when The Con was on its way, but Sainthood was the first album of theirs I ever got to anticipate as an established fan. Great times.
>>60742055
Have you listened to the other remixes? Personally I REALLY like the VHS or Beta Mix. All the non-album tracks I either compile into what I call the Orange Demo (since I don't think the tracklist was ever released, or at least I've never seen it). But songs like Guilty as Charged, Light Up, Wrists, Love Type Thing, etc. I include in their respective albums.
>>60742097
YES OMG YES. It has one of the greatest renditions of Divided EVER and hearing them play on such an intimate stage is really great, I recommend it.
>>60742261
I have no friends that are fans, they indulge me when I talk about them (and one friend even saw them live with Paramore during the Honda Civic tour!) but my power levels are too high. I've made them listen to some of their songs but they aren't as devoted as I am.
>Sainthood was the first album of theirs I ever got to anticipate as an established fan
I'm getting that now with LP8 and I'm SO EXCITED.
How would you rate their albums?
>me:
Under Feet Like Ours - 7/10
This Business of Art - 7/10
If It Was You - 8/10
So Jealous - 8.5/10
The Con - 9/10
Sainthood - 10/10
Heartthrob - 10/10
Yeah, I'm quite biased.
>Have you listened to the other remixes? Personally I REALLY like the VHS or Beta Mix. All the non-album tracks I either compile into what I call the Orange Demo (since I don't think the tracklist was ever released, or at least I've never seen it).
Not a big fan of remixes in general. I'll check that VHS or Beta Mix anyway.
>But songs like Guilty as Charged, Light Up, Wrists, Love Type Thing, etc. I include in their respective albums.
I prefer to keep them separate. The original albums didn't include them, so I don't too.
>YES OMG YES. It has one of the greatest renditions of Divided EVER and hearing them play on such an intimate stage is really great, I recommend it.
Cool. I'm gonna listen to it soon.
>>60742488

>So Jealous
7.5/10

>>60742941
>But most of the people I've met who like Tegan and Sara seem to be REALLY REALLY into them.
I guess because it's not only about music. T&S have charming personalities and you can't help but to love them. It depends on each fan how much they like them. It's absolutely no problem if you're not completely obsessed.

>I have no friends that are fans, they indulge me when I talk about them (and one friend even saw them live with Paramore during the Honda Civic tour!) but my power levels are too high. I've made them listen to some of their songs but they aren't as devoted as I am.
This is mostly the same with me too. My two best friends are the only friends I have that I ever talk to them about. One of them loves T&S but is certainly not a diehard fan like me. The other one likes them a decent bit, and he respects them and certainly recognizes their talent, but he doesn't listen to them alone in his free time. Whenever he and I hang out, we chill for hours sometimes on the porch and trade off music. I'll pick some songs, then him, etc. I constantly force myself to pick something other than T&S because I don't want to wind up annoying him. Yeah, that friend of yours, you told me about him a few threads ago. That would make me so jealous.
>I'm getting that now with LP8 and I'm SO EXCITED.
Hell yeah, man, I'm right there with you. I guess that would make this my third go around the bend. Sometimes I wish I could have discovered them in the early 2000s or something so I could have experienced the hype building up for their previous albums as well. Imagine what it would have been like seeing them in some club in Canada in the mid 90s.

There music is definitely accessible, lots of variety too which makes things interesting. Lyrically, I think they're okay. Some of the stuff they come out with isn't so good, but I guess it's impossible to like every song from an artist. However, I think there are a lot better lyricists out there.

Seconded. Quite frankly I always wished they included the bonus song on the original final cut itself instead of releasing them later. I think they fit perfectly into the album. The only problem I can think of with that is that I think Someday is a PERFECT closer for that record.

>>60744827
If you're not too keen on their earlier stuff, you might want to avoid Red Demo, Yellow Demo and Plunk since it's really heavy on the acoustic-guitar-wiccan-rock scene. Even some of the tracks on "my Orange Demo" are still pretty heavy on the acoustic-wiccan-feel that characterized their first two albums. Although I feel like you should give my bootleg Orange demo a listen to.
If anyone, I can zip it up and put it into a mega link if you'd like.
>>60744839
I actually think I've got a flyer signed by them when they played in Atlanta with Northshore (i think, I'll get back to you on that).
I feel like the organization to Sainthood was great and the addition of the three B-sides made Sainthood an even stronger album. But in a weird way it's strange because the B-Sides are closer in sentiment and sound to the Con then to Sainthood (those tracks were more guitar-heavy as opposed to the larger use of synths in Sainthood).
>>60745013

I agree with that. They do sound more like The Con than Sainthood, especially Wrists. It Was Midnight could have easily been plugged into the middle of Sainthood somewhere though.

I'm uploading the .zip to mega right now but I'm going to clarify on some of the folders since I'm autistic.
Heartthrob Instrumentals are the lyricl-less instrumentals from the same album. They're written so awkwardly to differentiate these songs from the non-instrumental version.
The Demos are all the "bonus" tracks: demos, remixes and some early live stuff.
Morgan Page and Tiesto are a collection of songs by the respective artists: it's their collaborations with T&S.
It's still uploading so I'll post the link when it's ready.

Wait, you don't know what last.fm is? People have mixed feelings about it. It's still very popular on /mu/ though. I've had one for about 5 1/2 years now and I still use it because it can give you tons of recommendations based on the artists in your library. Also people can measure their e-peens based on scrobbles. You should check it out.

>>60751540
Oh, boy. That's tough. They all sound somewhat different from each other. I'll say The Con. That's where I started and it's a perfect "middle of the road" album in terms of their career up to this point. It's a perfect bridge between what their first and latest album sound like.
>>60751612
Tegan: Soil, Soil and Nineteen
Sara: I Was Married and Floorplan
>>60751540
depends on your taste. Do you like listening to poppy/synth stuff? Or do you prefer something with guitars?
If you want synth, you should listen to Sainthood and Heartthrob.
If you want all the indie-feels and guitars then you should listen to their older stuff (starting from The Con and then going backwards or in the release order, up to you).

>>60751540
Sainthood (if you prefer guitar based music) or Heartthrob (if you prefer synth based music). Except the singles, The Con is less accessible than those 2 albums mentioned.
They're skinny women and have stronger, sharper jawlines than me, and I'm a male model.
Would I listen to their music? No, I have better stuff to give time to than a hipster band you guys like because of their appearance. If they were fat and slack-jawed would you like them?
>>60757500
>No, I have better stuff to give time to than a hipster band you guys like because of their appearance.
We like them mainly for their music. There are millions of beautiful girls in the world, but how many of them do the same music as T&S?
See also this: >>60739275
>If they were fat and slack-jawed would you like them?
Yes. Maybe I wouldn't care about their look at all, but def. I will enjoy their music.
>>60757500
>If they were fat and slack-jawed would you like them?
Of course I would still love them. I think they're great artists. There are plenty of women who make great music who I don't find particularly attractive, and there are plenty of attractive women who make lousy music.
If I judged the caliber of artists based on my physical attraction to them, most of my favorite artists wouldn't be men.
>>60751956
>would anyone admit their last one wasn't so great?
>>60757493
Seconded. I would also say If It Was You is very accessible for a first time listener.
>>60759461
I think that T&S became catchier and catchier with each album. Listening to their discography in reverse order is probably the best introduction to their music.
>>60760297
I think IIWY was catchier than So Jealous but Heartthrob was easily their catchiest to date. That's gonna be hard to top. I always prefer to go chronologically with them though.

>>60747893
Interesting considering that only two demos from Sainthood were released; Alligator from the remixes and The Ocean from the Home Recordings of the Official Vinyl Collection.
>>60751540
It's very subjective; depending on what kind of music you like directs where you should start in their discography (basically what >>60751905 this guy said). At first look, I'm not sure if I would start off with The Con (I might start with So Jealous but it's probably too much guitars-and-feels) but the Con is actually a great starting point. The only possible downside is that you MIGHT be disappointed since personally the Con is their best album.
>>60751612
Tegan: Nineteen and Call It Off, honorable mention forHop a Plane
Sara: Burn Your Life Down and Knife Going In
>>60751956

>The only possible downside is that you MIGHT be disappointed since personally the Con is their best album.
This is what I was thinking. As dearly as I love them and all their albums, The Con remains their mountain top to me as well as many other fans. If The Con turns out to be your favorite and it's the first T&S album you ever listen to, you might blow your load too quickly if you know what I mean.

What I really want to know though is how you landed the other signed gear. Do they really have that much of that on ebay and discogs? Either way that's incredible, dude.
Man this shit almost makes my head hurt.

Shit, my man, where were you in the 90s?

holy shit that must have been expensive.
The box set collection came with the record sized poster and with This Business of Art, If It Was You, So Jealous, The Con, Sainthood, and the Home Recordings which has a bunch of demos. I think they stopped selling the Collection box as soon as it sold out, a couple months after the release of Sainthood.
The charity thing came with the signed copy of the Heartthrob record, Live at Zia Records, the Closer Remixes, Get Along!, and Daytrotter Presents #16.
eBay and Discogs bought me all the CD's and the other records: the Alligator mixes, Guilty as Charged/I Run Empty and second copies of Live at Zia Records and Get Along that I've got framed on my wall.
A lot of people sell signed shit on eBay specifically, you just gotta be patient and wait for something good. It's usually signed posters and CD's, records usually go for really expensive.

Well yeah, I already had most of them before the box set came out. Then it came and went in a flash and it wasn't on ebay or anywhere else for quite a while after they sold out. Then Amazon got a handful of them and decided to ramp the price up from what was $100 brand new to $350 for a potentially lower quality used edition. Fuck that shit. I make good money but I only let myself get truly gypped when it the only option available, cause I wanted those records badly. I don't regret it because I love those albums dearly, but I do wish I could have had the foresight to hold out until the box set was announced.

I see. I'll definitely be looking into that in the next few days. In the meantime here's to hoping they hit Atlanta and NY when they announce the new tour. I will be tremendously bummed out if they skip us next year.

You guys got nothing to worry about tbqh. They usually always tour the bigger cities, right? Also, what size venue's do they usually play in now?
>>60772671
They usually do, but I've seen in my lifetime too many tours where my favorite bands skip out on us. Obviously nobody can hit every city on every tour, but you know what I mean. I still haven't seen them live and I can't wait to.
As for venues, they sometimes play pretty damn big ones now, especially if they're touring with someone else who has a colossal fan base.

tee hee
That should do it for this one, lads. I love you all, see you next week.
