Hey /mu/, I'm looking for some newer prog rock bands that aren't shit. Also, no djent please. I don't mind if they combine multiple genres, and experimentation is appreciated. Thanks /mu/, you're the best.

the problem with modern prog bands is that they're trying to be prog, while classic prog bands were just trying NOT to be pop
>>

I agree

Thanks for the meme

Love them, thanks for the rec

I'll check it out, thanks family
>>

Although I agree, some modern bands like TMV managed to bring some originality to prog rock, so there must be others, even if they are a bit more obscure

another unique aspect about classic prog was that most of them incorporated folkloric elements of the land they were from, instead of mixing many rock genres, which is what they do now, mainly because pop rock was so primitive at that time, they had to mix more 'pure' genres (rock, folk, classical... as opposed to now: punk, funk, metal....)
>>
>>60670541
Yeah, I guess the music climate right now just isn't right for any decent prog rock to be made.

examples (don't say Barclay James Harvest)

i mean come on, most of them were just literally doing everything more complicated, just to show off
>>
>>60670076
>trying to be prog
That's bulshit, steven Wilson has said that he refused the label prog but later accepted it

I feel many progressive rock bands now wouldn't get shit on so much if they were labeled as something else so everyone wouldn't compare them to the classics

Most of the stuff in >>60670947 apart from classic and neo-prog section barely sounds like classic prog
>>
>>60671062
They had many popy melodies, the only thing they did differently were longer songs and differnet structures

Like Pink Floyd, Supertramp, ELP or VDGG

Gazpacho
>>
>>60670979
The third track is fucking outstanding
>>
>>60671083
This, I don't get how /mu/ hates on modern prog and constantly needs to compare every band to older stuff but then they get hyped for a generic emo, indie folk or nu-gaze album
>>
>>60670076
I think the only issue I have with modern Prog is that there's a very large vein of bands that have a very sterile sound with no traces of humor, quirkiness, or modesty. Dreamtheater was probably the band that made this sound popular, and if not, they're definitely the biggest culprit.
>>
>>60671105
but they were actively trying to not be pop bands even if they added some pop in their compositions
>>
>>60671149
Not really prog imo
>>
porcupine tree
>>
>>60671210
But then what are the exceptions?
>>
>>60671211
The way you talk about it implies the contrarian anti pop value of those bands wasn't only an aspect of their approach that they masterfully balanced with the addition of the more tasteful elements of pop
>>
>>60671216
What about a twenty-something minute orchestral/musique concrete/jazz rock track is not prog?
>>

96 KB, 550x553
Underrated when it came out and is still underrated
>>
>>60671273
Well, they were rock bands in the end, so there was always going to be pop in it, but their main goal was not the same as pop rock bands like the Rolling Stones. It's not what they were, but what they were trying to do what made them prog. Obviously what I said does not apply to 100% of the classic prog bands.

All of these bands are alternative rock, but because some longer tracks and unusual themes people started labelling them as progressive rock
>>
>>60671389
Do you think Rush is prog?
>>
The new Guapo album is bad 2 the bone
>>
>>60671249
Off the top of my head, Mars Volta, Closure in Moscow, Oceansize, Mew, The Dear Hunter, Rush, early Coheed and Cambria, Anglagard, Minus the Bear, a lot of Math Rock like Hella, Maps and Atlases, 31 Knots, Giraffes?, Toe, etc
The bands that fall into the vein I was talking about are those like Opeth, Skyharbor, Children of Nova, Leprous, etc
>>
>>60671409
Honestly, that's only true for some of those albums. Frames for example is legitimately progressive rock.

not really. Their compositions are intricate and all, but in the end it just seems like a riff rock band, no experimentation whatsoever.

Thoughts on Riverside? Probably my favourite band currently.

>>60671441

I love these bands even despite the production, especially Leprous, whose new album is my AOTY
>>
>>60671486
Awesome, dl'ing s/t and Tres Caballeros
>>

this band's more psychedelic, but they have elements of like ITCotCK-era Crimson

>>60672550
At first this just sounded like imitation itcotck, but its really growing on me now
>>
Even though Steven Wilson is the official poster boy of teenage male autism and many consider his music to just be derivative worship, I've always loved his work and Hand. Cannot. Erase. is without a doubt his most complete album. Everything that people complained about with GFD and Raven was met with H.C.E. so definitely check it out, especially you >>60670782

Check the bottom of the chart, OP

Avoid Steven Wilson and Alt-Prog ("Post" Prog) if possible.

Avoid this faggot, he only listens to shitty math rock and mallgoth music
>>
>>60673105
He said
>experimentation is appreciated
therefore
>Avoid Steven Wilson and Alt-Prog

My own personal taste has nothing to do with this.
>>
>>60673137
there's some fairly experimental alt-prog artists, especially if you'd include TMV in the category
>>
>>60674471
TMV? Yes
But is there anything else?
>>
Anekdoten, KC worship.
>>
>>60674507
Oceansize, Fall of Troy, Tool, Circa Survive and Fair to Midland maybe
>>
>>60674546
Only Tool comes close to being experimental, and it wasn't really that much.
Haven't listened to Circa Survive though.
>>
>>60674507
The Sound of Animals Fighting's debut
The Stiletto Formal are very TMV-ish
Biffy Clyro's debut, maybe?

Also a lot of Japanese stuff like Gesu no Kiwami Otome, 88Kasyo Junrei, Ling Tosite Sigure, recent Dir en Grey, etc.
>>
oh, also Amplifier (speaking of Oceansize).

Nosound, from Italy. In the vein of Porcupine Tree but softer and dreamier.

Have you heard Unicorn Porn yet? I would recommend this album.
>>
>>60674584
CS are fairly restrained, never seen them as experimental or technical or anything. they're good musicians, and i like them, i doubt you would though. The Sound of Animals Fighting has their vocalist no one album and it's basically a more experimental version of them overall

also circle takes the square and gospel are pretty proggy but i don't think of them as alt-prog
>>
>>60674682
>Amplifier
This is like 3rd time someoen mentions them except me

They are good, but just feel like porr man's Size in many ways

nihiling from Germany do their sound better

>>60674682
>Nosound
Honestly one of my less favourite Kscope bands, I prefer Anathema, Pineapple Thief or Gazpacho
>>
I don't know if maudlin of the Well has a place here or not, but hey.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-QfLpgntV8
>>
>>60674721

they are "cousin" bands (even Steve Durose from Oceansize joined Amplifier them in 2011) but Amplifier is different in many ways. I like both the same.

> Anathema

one of my favorite bands, especially in the Judgement- A Natural Disaster era. Now they are like Christian or something.

> Gazpacho

listened to them once, didn't liked them that time.
>>
Damn I miss Oceansize so much

British Theatre and Vennart's solo stuff are so lackluster in comparison
>>
>>60674818
I know they are directly related, they even collaborated on their albums several times, but I just feel Amplifier are wekaer
For example Sel is much weaker vocalist than Mike
Both are good bands though, they deserved their fame more than Biffy Clyro or Muse
>>
Protest The Hero
>>
>>60674886
Not sure if he might like them
>>
>>60671459

Queen didn't do multiple side-long concept pieces
>>

>spocks beard

Please don't
>>
>>60675005
I know, but you can't say Rush weren't experimental when they defied their label's desire for more blues rock and put out 2112.
>>
>>60674886
Metalcore a shit
>>
>>60676188
PtH is actually good band among the crap
>>
>>60676252
Honestly, I listened to them a few years ago, didn't really like what I heard and just never gave it a chance. What album should I listen to then?
>>60673064
Thanks for the chart. Top tier tripfag imo
>>
>>60676422
They are not that different, the most acclaimed one is Kezia, my favorite is Fortress
>>
>>60676441
PTH are pretty nonstandard for metalcore, their use of 80s prog metal influence is really cool. they don't know when to stop the fucking guitar wank though.

imo corelia and the human abstract are both superior and do the same style, but yeah
>>
>>60675430
First of all, that's not experimental in the slightest.
Second, Prog was very popular at the release date of 2112, so it wasn't a risky move.

>>60676422
>Thanks for the chart.
You're welcome!
>Top tier tripfag imo
Thank you <3
>>
>>60676473
>the human abstract
RIP
Digital Veil was really good
>>
>>60676473
I meant that their albums don't sound that different from each other

How would you rank them
>>
>>60676489
Listening to Perhaps atm. Got super stoked, only to find out they just broke up a few months ago :(. Do you have any recs for other math-prog in a similar style?
>>
>>60676699
Well, Perhaps are one of the least important bands from the chart. If I made the chart again, I would remove them. But since you liked them, try listening to The Bulletproof Tiger.
>>
>>60676699
not exactly the same but maybe try Crime in Choir

>>60676545
kezia is most aggressive and unpolished, the sleekness of the later stuff doesn't suit that particular sort of prog metalcore well.
>>
>>60676816
Cool, thanks a lot dude. I'm pretty set on math rock now. I'll be checking out other stuff on the chart too, so thanks a ton!
