I see a lot of people claiming that NIN isn't industrial but isn't it outside of the mainstream enough? Experimental enough? I mean nothing on TDS is conventional except for maybe Closer. I wouldn't say it is full on industrial but Trent took the experimental tendencies of that genre and married it with alt rock. Industrial rock is a fitting term, I think.

Anyone who says they aren't industrial is full of shit. There's no accepted definition of industrial music. A lot of people in that scene didn't like NIN getting big and started calling them faux industrial or something else. It's just infighting among junkies that sparked that whole debate. It's like people who argue all metalcore isn't actually metal. They don't like it, so it's not metal anymore.

And Skinny Puppy sound like Depeche Mode with treated vocals and Godflesh is all guitar metal based music. Yet both of these bands get a pass and are "industrial" enough, yet NIN isn't. Some junkies like Ogre and Brian Williams didn't like NiN and decided they weren't industrial. Music evolves and styles mean different things in different eras.
