In Murfreesboro it's dead (aside from shitty rappers, songwriters and a few punk bands) but up the road in Nashville it's so much better but as a wannabe musician I don't go up there as much as I should...

How's Boston? I heard in the 80-90's the music scene was bonkers. Also the pixies and David Cross is from there so that's cool
>>
>>60653378
Yeah Boston/Cambridge are the best places nearby to see concerts (which is great because the MBTA is beautiful)

Lowell's local music scene is just kinda basement shows to get trashed at
>>
>>60653451
Lowell's scene sounds like Murfreesboro's. So much potential for it to be like an Olympia WA or Athens GA or a whatever little indie scene but no ones ever attempted to have indie rock meetings or cool band things.

Scenes alright. There's a lot of diversity here. Seems like a lot of singer/songwriter types, a few hopeful rappers and a few electronic musicians. Can't say I've seen much noise or anything harsh like this but it's probably there.

>>
>>60654596
I saw her and gave her a compliment but she didn't seem like she wanted to talk sadly, probably just busy since I was somewhat imparting on a convo she had with another musician I oddly enough was talking to before she walked up. Enough discussing less than slightly awkward convos I've had with musicians her music is good and if I actually get on my ass to make an album/demo before she drops out or goes into bigger or better things I'll give it to her.

When I got bored I would just walk around downtown. I don't miss the actual schooling, but I miss the location: there are so many nice places to shop in downtown. Plus there's some good food joints. I liked going to Cozy Thai and some Indian buffet place (I can never remember the name, it's something so simple too).

Anyway, I actually just graduated last May. Those 4 years were a struggle, but it was worth it in the end.

Very active and stacked with a lot of talent but unfortunately a lot of the folks I've come into contact with thru it are some of the most egotistical fucks you could possibly imagine. The whole "punk" aspect of the New Brunswick scene just breeds cunts who don't know how to run a proper show, which is really unfortunate because it has the potential be a real future hotspot for serious talent.

Nah I'm used to the typical bloated egos of musicians but some of these guys have managed to surprise even me. >>
>>60657391
Depends on what you want to do. I love our Film Theory teachers like Maciak and McGee (though this is his last semester). Our creative writing teachers are also really chill and helpful. But the theory classes can be really tough if you don't have any background in philosophy. It kills the girls who want to teach children.

All considered, I'd recommend taking a class like film as literature class because that's my area of concentration. But if you're interested in English, take a class that seems interesting and see how it goes. Try for a 3000 if you can, but any level of class will do.
>>
>>60657480
Alright, thanks bruv. Any idea what you wanna do? Tbh I just kind of want a general degree that I can use to get my foot in the door at a variety of places rather than something really specialized, and english seems like a good way to do that
>>
>>60657504
I wanna research and teach theory. English can get you anywhere though. It's not a bad idea if you're not sure what to do. Bruh if you ever want to ask anything else about English you can hit me up in /emoe/ threads or on rym.

The only last bit of advice I would give is if you take any English classes try to avoid Kronick. Cool dude but one of the worst teachers I have ever taken.
>>
>>60657565
Appreciate it senpai. Before I let you go, what's the beef with Kronick?
>>
>>60657339
Totally valid rant, I used to be heavily into Seahaven but I tried listening to them sorta recently and the vocals turned me right off (not sure how I initially liked them so much desu). I was always aware of how shitty Title Fight is though.

But there's still some beacons of light for the future of the genre imo, mainly The Menzingers, Citizen, and The Front Bottoms. I'm dreading that it'll all become too commercialized and subsequently passé really soon before the genre produces some more really good works though, but there's really no way of knowing for sure at this point.
>>
>>60657640
He's a really knowledgeable guy who has really interesting things to say.The problem is that he grades in a way where his daily assignments bring down your grade because the best you can do is a 91. He's one of those teachers that makes A students work extra hard for an A and B students like myself actually go see him to make sure we get a B. I legit stopped caring in one of his classes and skipped the final because I was so done with his teaching style, and I didn't get a note for when I was sick; so I had a fair bit of 0s for quizzes. And just a personal preference thing, he teaches in the mornings, and I hate having to wake up at 7:30 to make it to class.

Hey I mean the same argument could be made back in 1988 with indie and hardcore bands. I doubt they're will be a mainstream explosion seeing as rock music is basically dead at this point sadly. However something could change that, as at one point I naivly made the comparison that Wavves due to having 3 members and a poppy 2nd album (or third depending on how you saw it) with king of the beach I thought they would explode. Depends on time and place. ANYWAYS yes there are some good bands like front bottoms and such.

Holy shit, I just came across this for the first time earlier today. Spooky...

(it's been my fave album for a while tho lol it was cool to see chris ott loves it too).

Have you heard Ulrich Schnauss's remix of Crazy for You? Really fantastic.
>>
>>60658286
YES. Love me some Schnauss. I think it's cool he's considered shoegaze mainly due to the hazy melodies and stuff. His 2nd album the one that's called Strangely Absent or some shit is dank AF. Yeah Ott can be a bit opinionated obviously but he's got great points on music, and his music vids about his experience and history are amazing. Wish he did more on shoegaze. especially more modern groups which he touched on but didn't really get into. He could make a great 4th part since he actually encountered and lived through both the OG shoegaze and the modern revival of it since he was at pitchfork and shit. But yes Pygmalion is great, hasn't left my iphone in a while

the klezmer is explained by our abnormally high jewish population (I think it's something ridiculous like 31%?); same thing with eastern euro music though it's only two bands i know for sure. There's also plenty of jazz here too. Idk, nearly everyone here plays an instrument and music is just an extremely integral part of Wes culture, along with film and theater. Why I'm there as a math major i have no fucking clue.

NYC, no place I'd rather be. Seen a ton of concerts, plus the coffeeshop on campus hosts some pretty cool bands from time to time, like Titus Andronicus, Pile, and Elvis Depressedly last year. Also, I used to work at the radio station, and we had the Mounatain Goats, Courtney Barnett, and our biggest name, Mumford and Sons. Not a huge fan of their music, but Marcus was a pretty nice guy.

dope! i am from leesburg in Loudoun so i Know a bunch of people who go to vcu. i have been told your all's scene is quite good. and uva definitely has that stereotype - i was super worried about it going in - but once i actually went i didn't really find it to be true. there are definitely some assholes who think they're the salt of the earth but they self segregate; i've had no trouble meeting a bunch of awesome, likeminded people

>>60658767
Nice nice, I'm not familiar with the rva scene since I don't go there, yet ironically I interned at a studio down there and went to a few shows. I just stayed out of the scene because I was too young back in high school, I also thought if you were trying to make music in Richmond you were wasting your time since I thought it was a go nowhere city no one cares about. Which isn't true it was just very ignorant of me to think back then (and i guess now a bit). I mean if Matthew e white can get acclaim from being from Richmond anyone can. Promoters and bands ignore rva like the plague though, so that sucked in high school
>>

I would roll my eyes but that would be hypocritical considering corny math jokes are my brand

Not that guy but saw Jessica Pratt and panda bear there. Sound was dope for panda but sucked ass eggs for Jessica. Friend saw swans and said gira got hella pised when they blew the sound pa understandably and brought in their own. Marathons sounds doesn't upset me that much if they do a good job it just depends on the band I guess. Some suck some don't. St. Vincent a few yrs ago had great sound, GYBE had great sound, both at marathon. exit inns sound sucked for Jessica. Ironic because I knew MTSU guys running sound at GYBE and it was great, why not employ them more for shows with shitty sound? Biased obviously but if sound sucks then fuck the sound guy
>>
>>60659071
Yeah Godspeed was really nice
Death Grips were a shit ton of fun, was up on the fence and everything, but yeah their sound was eh
Honestly Thee Oh Sees last fall at Exit/In was probably one of the best shows I've seen out there

What's the scene like in Nashville, probably east Nash because it's cooler and probably better for people into indie and such. And just for clarification Murfreesboro is as dead as you think and not like Athens GA which it should be but I digress
>>
>>60659184
Honestly the only show I've seen in East Nashville was some house band a guy I was talking to at The Groove was playing in and invited me to come see, I really only go over there for record stores and food
I've been to a bunch of house shows for Belmont kids, the guys in Kid Freud are friends of friends so I've been to a couple of their parties, but I think most of the Vandy scene has
Kinda garage-y psych
>>
>>60659222
I'm pretty sick and tired of anything involving garage or pop indie. So many indie stereotypes both in Nashville and the Boro. Yeah east Nash is great for shopping and little shows, but I wish I was involved more in the local scene in Nash for shows and stuff since I'm about to put an album out and start playing shows by March april
>>
>>60658901
My sister goes to UGA and is really involved in the scene there. She's very shy but joined radio and it worked out so it can happen to you anon <3
>>
>>60658343
Modern shoegaze doesn't really have the sort of coherent hype that early 90's shoegaze did. It's more of a dispersed thing, like a lot of bands take the formula and experiment with it more than old bands did the first time around. And there's no definitive _world's greatest modern shoegaze band_. Who could it even be? M83? Asobi Seksu? Cheatahs?
>>
>>60659265
Honestly I think the most experience I have with Murfreesboro is stopping at the Pei Wei on the way to Atlanta
Yeah though, garage bands as a whole are kinda an overdone thing, but honestly I'm just glad it's that and not the country singer-songwriter thing you'd expect
A buddy of mine who's also from Southern California and I are trying to get something going, thinking hopefully something twinkly and math-y since there's only a couple bands in town I can think of doing that
>>
>>60658228
econ blows!!! but glad to see there are more ppl interested in music on the farm. sucks that we're so far from anything interesting
>>
>>60659307
That's also true, it's like any psychedelic music there's no one hot bed it's all over the place and people either putting their own spin on it or sucking the old vine for old tricks
>>60659321
Secret stuff was not sure if they're around an emo ish band that was somewhat popular, not sure what their reputation was in Nashville. Also pei Wei is so good, worth it for dealing with the Boro

>City scene is Baltimore, so a lot of heavy aggressive shit that I kinda like and am used to coming from the hardcore scene of my own town. However on campus, shit is mostly like indie rock, emo, and shoegaze with some post hardcore thrown in there. I like my share of emo and post hardcore but the rest I care little about and see it as genres infested with hipsters.

>>60659452
Not really, that's a thing there too. I've seen a couple cool local bands in that genre. Really both scenes sorta coexist there. I'm just sorta used to being wrapped up in the heavier genre scenes.

Also I'd like to add that there are some rappers on campus trying to start some shit.

Yeah, Secret Stuff were one of them actually
Caught them opening for tricot and they just played American Football covers when they couldn't think of what else to do
I don't really know if they have a scene going but they're an example at least
Also I'm pissed Deafheaven's only opening when they come through and tix are like $45

That's crazy that I mention secret stuff and and you've seen then, for some reason it always blows my mind. I knew someone who tried to join that band and bragged about it and when he couldn't join or whatever he just started disliking them. Didn't help he was a literal shit musician. Also fuck that price, back in 2013/14 tix were maybe $20

I honestly can't really think of what I'm trying to see next although with finals coming up it probably won't be much anyways desu
I know UMO's in February but not much else, once the spring touring schedules come out more will probably happen, but this fall was honestly really good

>>60659550
Are you talking about Cat's Cradle?

Also try to drop by Nightlight whenever you can, it's also in Chapel Hill. They mostly have small dj sets, but they've also had their fair share of noise shows. A friend of mine is playing a gig their next month with his band.
