Learn proper positions, start by playing the chromatic scale, pretty simple, go 0-1-2-3-4 on every string from lower to higher. Practice at different speeds, after a week or so look for a couple of tabs of simple familiar melodies like Ode to Joy and play them. Then look for all the basic chords and when you have some control over them look for scales.

a different guy here but it depends what you want to play. If you want to learn shitty campfire songs to make <15 girls like you, learn chords. If you want to learn guitar solos, start off with the pentatonic/blues scale.

Justin guitar on youtube has really good intro and intermediate lessons for free. Pretty much learned the basics (chords and scales, strumming patterns, etc.) from there.
