your shugazi AOTY edition. it's almost time for top 10 lists. what shoegaze albums will make it to your best of 2015?

PSUB for sure. one of the few nu-gaze bands that actually bring something new to the table.

I made this a couple of threads ago. Suggest edits/updates. Somebody made this http://strawpoll.me/5983077/ a while ago too so keep voting on that I guess
>>
Remember when you were just getting into shoegaze and you'd just go through all the suggestions in /shugazi/, find things you like and listen to them on repeat.

Help me feel like that again, I enjoyed Distressor, A certain smile, a certain sadness, Eyedazzler, The pains of being p a h, Velodromo EP and much more but lately I've just gone back to The power of failing and Pictures can tell like, some of the more emo stuff but miss the general shoegaze sound.

If there is a soft, melodic, bit noisy, shoegaze album talking about giving up, fading into the crowd, suicide and depression please let me have it.

that helen record is kinda frustrating to listen to because it feels like liz doing a parody of liz. like the record itself feels very run-of-the-mill dream pop type thing and the only thing that gives it an edge at all sonically is lizs vocals, and yet they are still obnoxiously low in the mix and drenched in verb like all the rest of her shit. as if some random is doing an impression of her.

Is PSUB's album really the best shugazi album this year?
Like, it's good but it's really not even close to being an AOTY contender for me
>>

I only had 1 full listen and that it was pretty meh but I did hear a song of theirs from that album on the radio, months after listening to it and liked it

>>60637439
>Is PSUB's album really the best shugazi album this year?

Yes.

>Like, it's good but it's really not even close to being an AOTY contender for me

That's because shoegaze in general has been super weak since the mid-late 90s. Still the best of its own genre.

I like overwhelming washes of sound, kind of like the ending to Slowdives Alison. Come to think of it, I like Slowdive a lot. Are there any other bands I could listen to in their vein? Tried Mbv but they were kind of hit or miss to me. Not so much into the poppy/jangly stuff, but more of the washes of guitar sounds and melodramatic depression.
>>
>>60639425
>if you don't like this album you have to be a newfag

Give me a fucking break.
>>
>>60639533
If you think Spectres isn't generic, you're a newfag
>>
>>60639544
They're both good albums for sure- to shit on Spectres is to shit on edgy, noisier shoegaze. To shit on PSUB's new album is to shit on lovely, dreamy shoegaze. They're the best in their respective weight classes.
>>
>>60639602
Noisy shoegaze AOTY is either the new APTBS or Xinlisupreme, my friend. Spectres is aight
>>
>>60639524
There's plenty of slowdivey stuff out there, friend. But it sounds like you're more into "dream pop" than "shoegaze."

I'm not sure how new you are but you should definitely check out 'Heaven or Las Vegas' by Cocteau Twins and 'Whirlpool' by Chapterhouse. Maybe 'A Storm In Heaven' by The Verve. I'd say Moose but they're a bit jangly I guess. Deerhunter is a pretty sweet band, try 'Microcastle' for something more modern. 'Dragging a Dead Deer Up A Hill' by Grouper if you can stand the ear-melting reverbey shit going on. That's all I can think of for now.
>>
>>60637911
I saw them supporting Pinkshinyultrablast earlier in the year, can confirm that it's just derivative crap.

>>60639932
Honestly there's so many that I find it hard to order in my head, not all of them shoegaze related. I guess for some bands, having a UK tour is just too expensive for them, as I imagine a US tour is for a lot of european bands.
>>
>>60639957

Something other than shoegaze. You sending her shoegaze when you don't even listen to it will just make you come off as some idiot trying to come off as someone who's into that cool underground meme rock /mu/ always talks about; either send her something else or acquire a taste for it yourself before you send her anything. Pic related really grew on me.

Saw them last month and it was the best show I've been to. Great group of guys.

I think I'm starting to enjoy shoegaze more in a playlist fashion rather than in an album fashion. I don't know why, but I think the change in approach to texture, tone, and mixing on each song adds for a more diverse and exciting listen. Of course I still like to get totally devoured in the atmosphere and tone of an album in its entirety, but with shoegaze specifically, this way of listening is making it more enjoyable for me.

So any kind of albums that instantly pops into your head that kind of does this? I think the best example that I can think of off the top of my head is No Thank You by Coaltar of the Deepers.

that was really good.

thanks for listening man, glad you dug it.

Thank you for sharing this. Never heard of them before but this is a surprisingly good album
>>
>>60674209
I really enjoyed that album as well. Their previous albu7ms didn't quite do it for me because I never really got into "hardcore" but they came up with a pretty damn good shoegaze album and I'm very impressed

I have to say, Tamaryn could be my least favorite shoegaze band ever. I find them incredibly boring. Ringo Deathstarr is decent enough for a listen or two.

merriweather post pavilion but it's not shoegaze

I've been a big Title Fight fan for a while now and I like the direction they're going.

They've always mixed a little shugazi into their hardcore albums. Even Floral Green has a few tracks that verge on shoegaze, it's an amazing album.

is Electric Warrior the first proto-shoegaze work?

No.

I love the album but no song on it even comes close to shoegaze or even dreampop/noise rock.
>>
>>60679895
not even considering if you strip away all noisiness from shoegaze, it just sounds like Electric Warrior?
>>
I wonder if Stereolab would be considered Shoegaze.. hmm

Pic related doesn't get as much attention as it deserves. Superb early 90's shoegaze/space rock.

Did you hear the ambient album he released this year?

Drop You Luminous Colors is lacking in texture?
That's the most contrarian thing I could possibly fathom
>>
>>60680299
Dude whats to like about Pram? I've given one of their albums a spin but it did nothing for me. I'm a big fan of YLT and Stereolab... is there an album or song of Pram's that i should start with?

this song is crazily stupid. The chord progression is the most overused progression ever. but it's catchy as fuck, and i love it sooo much.
