I favor Down Colorful Hill myself, but Ocean Beach is pretty great. I don't know, maybe it comes from living a few miles from it (and the Great Highway, which you cross on the way there). Red House Painters and early Sun Kil Moon are really excellent, but I really haven't gotten along with the more recent stuff. It feels like Kozelek has become trapped in his own bitterness. There are still moments of empathy and insight, but now they often strike me as calculated or contrived, which is pretty ironic given the confessional style of his recent work.
