Did he really pull it off? It's shit DESU.
>>
TELL ME ABOUT BEEFHEART
WHY DOES HE WEAR THE MASK?
>>
>>60594783
Listening rn actually. IDK why this is considered so crazy and weird, it takes like one full listen to get used to and then it's actually pretty hook-y and fun.
>>
by practicing for almost a fucking year 14 hours a day
>>
>>60594800
I think he meant the trout mask, ya dip
>>
>>60594916
it's considered crazy and weird by the same people who think Radiohead is avant-garde
>>

>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U8__zZ2E3y4
>>
Are you talking about the trout mask or the music on the album lol
>>
>>60594783
The second half of Veteran's Day Poppy is a contender for one of the most influential and beautiful moments in rock history
>>
>>60595375
it's a great album closer yes
>>
By haphazardly hitting notes on a piano with no music knowledge or knowledge of how to play a piano and then having someone with actual talent transcribe it on different instruments and then performing it. What a surprise, it came out like unorganized, non-cohesive shit. My mom who doesn't know anything about music could have made this album. Captain Queefheart sucks all dicks and you guys only think this is good because other people told you to think that.
>>
>>60595375
I agree.
It's one of my favorite songs of all time.
>>
>>60594916
>it's actually pretty hook-y and fun.
yeah pretty much thats it
is just a good fucking album
i dont see whats so weird about it too
is just some guy fucking around with music, influenced by free jazz and modern classical.
PLUS some of the best guitar riffs ever with god tier drumming.
>>
>>60595473
>Captain Queefheart
pfff haha good one!!
>>

>My mom who doesn't know anything about music could have made this album
wheres her rock masterpiece, polyrythmic, avant-garde jam of a lifetime at doe?
>>
>>60595508
I don't know, I haven't made her hit a piano and then transcribed it.
>>
>>60595485

>don't see what's so weird about it

Come on dude... I love this album but you have to admit that it is weird.
>>
>>60595536
It's obviously memeing. No one with any frame of reference for how music normally sounds would be confused as to why this is perceived as weird.
>>
>>60595536
>>60595473
I honestly think that Frownland was a bit of a poor choice for an opener. It's one of the less accessible tracks on the album, and so people can have difficulty from the very start when they're listening for the first time
There's no denying the album has catchy tracks, though, and it's not that odd or out-there in the grand scope of things. Definitely one of my favorites
>>
>>60595536
is kinda abbrasive but if you heard any free jazz and krautrock before listening to it is just a really funny album. kinda like a joke, but a good one

>it's really funny to just make music that sucks
>>
>>60595588
Frownland is a great opener; some of the best lyrics on the album, immediately lets you know what you're getting into and it's not too long. The album starts off strong which fits its spirit.
>>
>>60594783
how's that thing at the top of his hat called?
>>
>>60595690
I guess it can be seen that way. It's just kind of interesting how one of the first tracks is one of the most chaotic and "free"; still, there's do denying it's a great track

>>60595642
Me too.
>>
I first learned about this album from rolling stone mag list which included brief commentary by matt groening.

I don't think there's any outsider mystique left to this album.

But I'm really inspired by TMR. Why make music that sounds good and is composed with thought and and understanding of music when you can just make a cacophony of completely unorganized and unstructured bullshit and tell people that it's good?

http://vocaroo.com/i/s1NYqebrj697
>>
>>60595721
I definitely get your point, but like the other anon said it made me laugh out loud almost immediately which is perfect for me. I just couldn't imagine the album opening any other way.

>>60595816
good job
>>
>>60595816
Well, to think TMR is unstructured is incorrect, though
I mean, they played the album note-for-note live. There are definite melodies and rhythmic patterns all across the album. It's more based in free jazz than traditional rock structures, really
>>
>>60595849
It wasn't based on anything. Even though it is performed based on its original composition, it's original composition was made by someone who had no idea what they were doing and was unstructured. If you slam piano keys with no idea of what you're doing and then replay it note for note, that doesn't make it structured.
>>
>>60595844
No doubt. I just think it's incredibly Beefheart-esque to put such a bizarre track as an opener

>>
>>60596216

>started making music after the second time i did acid

>>60596371
saw the cool cover on youtube when i was trying to get into zappa.
never listened to zappa since lol
>>60596390
ok
>>
>>60596389
Pretty debatable, a lot of critics think it's terrible, a lot of people only think it's good because it broke all rules, and a lot of people just think it's good because it's unique and only because it's unique. In reality, it was composed by someone who had no idea how to compose or play the piano and it really shows.

How did you first hear TMR?

>>60596390
How many times have you done acid?
>>
>>60596626
>How many times have you done acid?
How much music have you written sober?
>>
>>60596634
Almost all of my music. It's pretty common for people to not think acid is as interesting or powerful as people tell them and then to be proven completely wrong when they try acid. It changes the way your brain works for a few hours and it profoundly changes your perspective.
>>
>>60596785
>Almost all of my music.
Which is how much?
>>
>>60596818
I'd say 30 songs or so? My band broke up because I moved away and I've been pretty busy since. Certainly there was a couple beers and a joint or to worked in to some of those but it doesn't change my brain enough to take me out of reality like acid does. I'm too busy to do other things when I'm tripping balls.
>>
>>60596848
two*
>>
>>60596848
lol
>>
>>60596866
What's funny about that?
>>
>>60596970
The assertion that acid somehow makes artists more creative. The catch 22 is that the examples most often used, those artists were already creative to begin with.

If you are just some dumb 18 year old who just ditched his first high school band and has only written 30 songs and you are already resorting to acid for "inspiration", you are most likely not nearly as creative as you think, and acid really hasn't helped you to be anything more than what you began with.
>>
>>60595473
and yet captain beefheart got an amazing career out of making music and you have nothing of value to your name.

I'm not saying you can't critique him because you're shit, all I'm saying is that if it's so easy then go fucking try it yourself. and don't say you can't because you don't have any talented musician friends, that's just a cop out and you know it

I'm a 23 year old college grad, and I thought exactly what you thought before I tried it at 19. It actually makes different parts of your brain communicate that don't normally do so. I know that everything you're told sounds like hippie bullshit, but if you were to try it, you would never have this feeling again.
>>
>>60597149
As I said, you weren't that creative to begin with. it's just a crutch unless you were to creative to begin with.
>>
>>60597123

>>
>>60597226
Maybe stop doing acid and try to make real music
>>
>>60597214
Okay, but I started writing music before I did acid and everyone who has done acid told me it made them more creative an their music showed that. It actually profoundly changes the way your brain works for a few hours and you remember what you learned during that period.
>>
>>60597244
It was a joke. I was playing nonsense to make fun of TMR. Your head is so far up your ass that you can't recognize a joke.
>>
This thread is giving me double penetration disorder so lemme clear something up:

Acid can help creativity, but the creativity has to be there in the first place. It's not fucking magic. If you rely on the acid to make music it's going to be shit that only sounds good to you. Not to mention acid wont help after taking it a few times. It's either go nuts or don't do it.

A nonsense false dichotomy man. I've done acid 3 times in my life, it profoundly affected me in a positive way and probably saved my life from bacterial meningitis, fibromyalgia, arthritis, severe depression and chronic fatigue at the same time. It did more than a year of fluoxetine ever did. It actually does blast your serotonin levels for a few hours and allows different parts of your brain to communicate that don't normally do so. Nearly everyone who does it reports an increase in creative thought during the high and for months afterward and this is supplemented by psychological studies. It does help.

Critic Robert Christgau gave the album a B+, saying, "I find it impossible to give this record an A because it is just too weird. But I'd like to. Very great played at high volume when you're feeling shitty, because you'll never feel as shitty as this record."

this sums it up for me
>>
>>60597596
I really don't think it's good. Sure it's interesting how it was created, and how it inspired people to break the mold. Other than that, this album was composed by someone who knew absolutely fucking nothing about what they were doing or even how to play piano, and that shitty music was then transcribed to guitar, bass and horns. Predictably, it came out like absolute shit.

>>60597628
So you don't like new people with different ideas?

>>60597639

>>
>>60597659
i think you missed my point. someone out there could write a beautifully flawed piece with no piano experience. whether or not thats what happened with this album is another question
>>
>>60597696
It's literally on the wikipedia page. The composer didn't know anything about composing music or playing piano, and then he made the album on piano which was then transcribed to guitar, bass and horns.
>>
>>60595816
>cacophony of completely unorganized and unstructured bullshit
because that doesnt describe TMR replica at all

Its highly irregular, but not unorganized. You just have pussy ears like my 10 year old sister.
>>
>>60597729
If you regard transcribing unorganized and unstructured music being transcribed to other instruments as being organized, you are wrong. Seriously, you could have gotten anyone that didn't understand music to fuck a piano and then turned it into this album.

First thing I do when I wake up is listen to TMR. Then I have breakfast, soybeans of course. After I eat I have my shower where I listen to Trout Mask Replica again. As a cleanser, I like to go for a run where I typically listen to a lighter album like Safe As Milk or even Bongo Fury. When I get back it's lunch time and I'll listen to Trout Mask Replica while I mash my soybeans. While I eat I like to enjoy a nice documentary, specifically one about Captain Beefheart. Following that extended screen time I like to keep my mind sharp with some reading. So I'll read and interpret the lyrics to Trout Mask Replica, of course I have the album playing in the background so I'm 100% focused.

By now my day is going pretty good and I usually want to share it with somebody else. So I'll call up some friends to hang out. We like to play basketball, play tabletop RPGS and watch movies together but mostly we listen to Trout Mask Replica. After we all listen to the album together in our listening circle we head back to my place for dinner where I serve up a mean soybean. Just for the sake of ambiance, I'll play Trout Mask Replica in the background. Dinner conversation tends to be lively as we each share our favorite moments from Trout Mask Replica.

My friends go home after this and while it was fun, it's time to prepare for another big day tomorrow. I'm only human so pardon me if this is graphic but I do enjoy a bit of masturbation before I sleep. I'm not really adventurous, I masturbate to vanilla, lesbian sex and oral but mostly just the cover art of Trout Mask Replica. Following that I clean myself up and unwind with a bit of music; Trout Mask Replica being my favorite. That's when I hop into the shower for a brief and relaxing warmth, I'm pretty clean by now I just want to ease up my muscles. Then it's time for bed. Being something of an audiophile I like to listen to music while I sleep. After I hit play to start up the song "Frownland" I drift to sleep.

I hate christgau's music lists and the albums he likes, I thin he's a fucking hack, but damn his reviews like this one are just very well written. Christgau is a writer who happens to be working in the criticism of music industry. Otherwise, he writes a 100 times better than Piero.

Personal experiences coming through

>Recording sober
Pretty good

>Recording under influence of marijuana
ayy lmao but seriously that sounds good I just don't know if it will sound good in 2 weeks lets hope.

>recording under the influence of LSD
Why am I slaving over this instrument I just want to eat yoghurt and watch foreign television

>recording under the influence of mushrooms

>recording under the influence of mdma

>drugs don't make you creative

people don't actually believe drugs have no affect on creativity right?

It just feels so sincere, so geniune, instead of Piero's tryhard style. It's a shame his taste is so disgusting.

>blog posts: the thread
Shit like this is why /mu/ is easily the worst board on 4chan.
SwollenMember seems like a legitimate autist, the way he posts something and then randomly throws extra information that nobody asked for in posts after it.

i think his goal is to canonize popular art, rather than create a list of listening priorities based on artistic merit. This goal is to establish what is the best artistically within the realm of popular music, and move other critics toward rewarding the talented popular rather than just the popular. This is essentially why he considers himself the dean of american rock critics, although I think he overestimates his ability to be this kind of influencing force on rock criticism.

OK So I went to bed, woke up, and not only found this thread was alive all night, but that Swollenfag was pretending to fuck models and be in a famous band?

lol That's what acid does to ya I guess.

this

frownland is probably the "craziest" and "weirdest" song on the album, so they probably only listened that far.

How is TMR not crazy and weird when put into context?
>>
>>60603820
because these anons are so avant garde the music they like can't even be comprehended by the human brain.

>>60603859
That's not context

>just repeating over and over that it's unstructured means i'm right
Considering you think that posting models proves people wrong too, I can't say you have any real validity.
