Is living in the suburbs as depressing as it looks?

No, just plain. Sort of empty if you don't have much going on.
>>
>>60589701
You don't have many real world problems to be concerned with (poverty, crime, etc) so it usually makes people either incredibly stupid and rebellious or an existentially ridden sadboy (like myself)

>>
>>60589701
All my friends that lived in the suburbs have emotional problems and bad, abusive parents.

Meanwhile my friends that live in slightly smaller homes in neighborhood surrounded by woods are more or less well-adjusted.

I think a lack of dense woods to play in leads to instability.

>>
>>60589701
I doubt I'll ever live in the suburbs when I'm older, but lol consider yourself lucky if you find the suburbs to be "scary". I'd rather that than a lot places in the world. I do want to direct a movie about a suburban neighborhood where everyone is secretly murderers, sickos, drug addicts, and psychopaths in their spare time. They try to hide it from each other, and they're so caught up with their own facade they don't notice each other. Don't steal my idea /mu/
>>
>>60589886
How's middle school going?
>>
>>60589881
It's not like cities are any better anon.

Really the only thing they have going for them is "culture", and that's usually shit.

Oh, and street vendors, which are the best form of food.
>>
>>60589908
Shit, wrong person
>>
>>60589701
yes i want to kill myself
>>
>>60589922
honestly i think moderate sized cities are the best. lots to do, crime isn't really an issue unless you are involved in it yourself, clean enough, easy commute to work or school, more affordable than large cites, bands and events don't skip you like some small place, many options for jobs etc etc. all that but without huge city issues
>>
>>60589960
Cheer up, buddy! You'd be just as suicidal in a rundown apartment in the city, or wasting away slowly in the country!
>>
>>60589886
that's actually a really neat plot idea. you should get on it, seriously. write a screenplay or novel based on that premise, and start writing it now. what are you waiting for? when I was 16 I wanted to write a nine-part space opera, and now years later I'm polishing off the second draft of part one. you just have to do it. DO IT
>>
>>60589701
Not as much as people make it out to be. People should have more initiative in the suburbs to do stuff tho.
>>
>>60589908
Lol it's better than half the shite movies that come out nowadays.
>>60590094

>>
>>60588929
I live in a place like this. I live a normal, fulfilling life
>>
>>60590520
a goooood portion of Arcade Fire's lyrics have to do with suburban tropes of growing up and having a hometown. Not to mention Neon Bible and it's total revolt against having grown up with a suburban mentality
>>
>>60589701
Yes. But it also allows you to live in an almost parody-like version of America.
It's probably the most average you can get when it comes to civilization, it's right in the middle of ghetto and city, with less crime than either.
It can be depressing, but it's great fuel for music.

They're not from the suburbs, but they definitely use lyrics that conjure up feelings of living in the suburbs, same with trailer parks.

Pic related is Issaquah, borders very closesly to what I consider a suburb.
>>
>>60590818
i ve been to isssaquah many times. most of the neighborhoods are quite new and would not have been there when they were. theres a lot of farms and the town centre is like 3 blocks long. its a shit hole. that pic is almost the entire non rural area of the whole city as it would have been in the 90s

>>
>>60591577
Funny, I'm in the opposite scenario. It's nice feeling relatively safe in my own neighborhood for a change.
>>
>>60591577
How come ghettos and suburbs are considered separate? Compton is one of the most crime ridden shitholes in America and it's also a suburb. Where I live is technically fairly rural and a suburb and it's riddled with tweakers, rotting old houses, felons and spic gangbangers.
>>
>>60591459
It's a dream for people with make fun of "special snowflakes" over the internet on facebook. Overly Sanitized, boring and predictable, safe from people who aren't like them
>>
>>60589701
pretty much, unless you live near a city like me
>>
>>60591466
hm I don't regret it but it would definately be cooler to live in a place like Salem with a lot of history or something. I live in the Chicago suburbs so I kind of relate to the city's culture. my town has a pretty equal distribution of people of each race which is something I really like. some larger suburbs seem to be more interesting, they have a lot of artwork and stuff
>>
>>60591613
Section 8 housing is bringing a lot of that shit to suburban areas. The theory was that letting gangbangers into a nice area will help them to see that they don't have to live a life of crime and violence, but what ends up happening is they just bring that mentality and their friends to their new home until their neighbors get sick of that shit, move out, housing value inevitably drops and then you have a new "ghetto".
>>
>>60591615
>Overly Sanitized, boring and predictable, safe from people who aren't like them
that sounds more like it would be a dream for the special snowflakes themselves senpai
>>
This album more than their others
>>
If I lived in a suburb, I'd probably go full on goth or something, I have some sort of primal urge to disrupt all illusions of "harmony"
>>
>>60591702
"harmony" in a suburb is staying inside and sometimes hearing a lawnmower in the distance.
You can go outside every single night, in the dead of night, and you can walk around and see absolutely no one. Disrupting the harmony is easy, all you have to do is realize how boring everyone in a suburb is and do what they don't do.
>>
>>60591671
Where I live actually was worse 20 years ago. The suburb where I live was pretty much all tweakers, white trash and mexicans then improved when they started building new houses and subdivisions in the outskirts, which brought in all these middle class mormons looking for somewhere a bit cheaper to live. So now it's like 70 percent ghetto/rednecks and 30 percent middle class religious families that "gentrified" the town over the years.
>>
>>60591745
>You can go outside every single night, in the dead of night, and you can walk around and see absolutely no one.
You can do this in the afternoon as well and it's like a ghost town; when I was a kid I would ride my bike around the neighborhood and never come in contact with a single person.

its juts people living their lives man, same as you. Doesn't mean everyone is depressed and having an existential crisis everyday. Most of these people are probably perfectly happy. Gotta set yourself apart and be unique INWARDLY, by having specific interests and passions that are important to you, not by living in a nicer house.

Why is this shit so desirable in America? I don't mean to judge but in my country apartments are more desirable than large houses, because, really, wtf are you going to do with so much space except having people further from each other and being as a whole further from multiple choices of lifestyle (more nearby schools, markets etc.)?
>>
>>60589881
We have some not white people here and they kinda suck.
Heterogeneity is so overrated.
>>
>>60594136
You're like that because you have to be.
I'm not sure if you're aware but Europe has a pretty massive housing crisis right now.
>>
>>60594136
You only say that because you didn't live that way. I've lived in the suburbs almost all my life and other than being closer to things I'd much rather have a house than an apartment. Living so close to strangers seems gross. The extra space is great for kids to play in, grow gardens, build a pool, have a big dog, have nice greenery to look at, fresh air, privacy, the feeling of (sort of) owning property

You've never truly felt the human experience until you've lived in a city with high crime rates/gang violence, generally-accepted pollution, the vague tensions of culture clash, and the faint smell of urine from the many homeless people constantly permeating the air. White Bread suburbanites have no idea what they're missing out on.

>>60594951

>>60594917
agreed desu
For some reason, people feel that they are getting a good deal when they consent to sitting in traffic for an hour, working a shit job to pay the bills, hoof it back in traffic for another hour, and come home to an unremarkable house, with an unremarkable life.

scary man
>>
>>60594951
yikes. i lived in a really sterile planned city in CA and it was terrible but that is next level. i'm sorry friend
>>
>>60595002
*meant to add

You spend just as much money if you lived in the city. Is being able to have a house with a lawn really worth living in a ghostown with stress stacking up faster than your debt?

Might as well just rent a 2-3 bedroom apartment in the city and save yourself the stress and monotony, and enjoy the two extra hours of life you get back.
>>
>>60595002
All jokes aside a rural life would be ideal, but I would take suburban life over city life any day. The idea of living in a giant concrete human hive is not appealing to me. At least you can have a nice yard and some peace in the suburbs.
>>
>>60595045
How in the hell do you come to the conclusion that living in a quiet suburb is somehow more stressful than some city with its noise pollution and traffic jams?
>>
>>60595063
But it's a sterile environment. Like the anon earlier was saying, there's no clashing of cultures and classes. There's no buzzing music scene, no bar hopping, no film festivals. It's an enclosed environment where everyone pretty much makes the same amount of money and has basically lived the same life.

City living can be shit, even lonelier than suburbs, but at least there is character to it. There is soul for lack of a better term.

The suburb is where the wageslave plants his roots and raises a new generation of wageslaves.
>>
>>60595094
not that guy but i'll say it again. its personal preference. i hate sitting in traffic to get to work, loud ass lawn mowers, no night life, less access. thats stressful to me. at least if you are in the city you can just walk places. it just depends on what you like to do.
>>
>>60594951
my dad wants to buy a trailer down there and start snowbirding
>>
>>60595094
I suppose that's me projecting.
Both my parents worked, and sat in traffic for an hour every single day, to come home and raise/feed 4 kids, while going through a shit marriage and struggling with paying outrageous rent.

I guess it's only applicable if you're a miserable wageslave with kids.
>>
>>60595124
That is why you live in a suburb where you can have your space and isolation, and visit a city when you want to have some fun. If you live in a city, you can never really escape all that shit when you need time to yourself without saving up for a vacation or something.
>>
>>60595169
see im the exact other way. i love to go camping but i need to be around everything most of the time
>>
>>60595154
Your dad really shouldn't. Flagstaff is a great place for its environment, but its filled with hippies and natives who absolutely despise snowbirds.
Apparently the mountain was a holy spot for natives, and now it's getting covered with literal frozen shit water.
Snowbirds are tourists, they usually don't plant their roots near here.
>>
>>60595169
I see your point. Having privacy is definately nice.
But personally, I wouldn't want to drive 30-60 minutes to have a few hours of fun.

Sometimes you just want to walk on over to the local bar and drink
>>
>>60595224
not to mention if its like a Tuesday night at 10pm and you feel like doing something you actually can cuz stuff is open
>>
>>60595155
Outrageous rent is a universal experience for lower-class people, I think, as is much of the other stuff you mentioned. If you work a shit job for shit money and come home miserable and unfulfilled, it doesn't matter if you're living in a tiny apartment in a giant, dirty city or in a trailer in the middle of a wasteland - it's still gonna be some ass. The flavor of the ass might be slightly different, but everyone's sad no matter where they are.

I kind of hope there are ways to break out of that and find meaning and hope in your life, no matter where you end up living, but I think that might be overly optimistic.

It's like the soundtrack of an obsessive and overly energetic teenager living in the suburbs desperately trying to make things happen.

This and swimming pools and really bad chain restaurants. Or that's what it was. Pretty sure it's mostly falling apart now. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S8SdWEQg6cE

maybe audience-wise, but their music doesn't really capture suburban life at all

The burbs are mad comfy. The only problem is when people just stay in the house 24/7 and dont go out for a walk, talk with neighbours, etc. Barely even see kids playing outside anymore, they are all inside on video games.

still beats living in a gray, concrete, over-populated, cramped, noisy, crime-ridden, nature-less city though

This guy used to hang around on /mu/ a while back. He makes hands down the suburbiest music on the planet.

Oh man you summed it up perfectly. The most common complaint of where I lie is that it's boring. While that is true my city is beautiful as fuck and I try to take every moment to experience it anyway I can.

A lot of the people I know simply seem too comfortable with life and spend it doing sedentary things. I don't have any grudge against people like that but I hate it when they summarise an entire city without making much of an effort to explore it first
