This is the (not so anymore) daily general /jazz/ thread.
What are you listening to these days and what are your thoughts on it?
What underrated jazz albums do you want to recommend to to the jazz fans of /mu/?
Musicians, what are you practicing/learning?
Plus any other jazz-related questions or discussion
I'm just starting to explore, beginning with New Orleans, some of its pretty cool.

enjoy your stay !
This is a must have. Just got into him a few months ago. Smooth as Fuck.
Been listening to this kinda.
>>60580550
I only heard him on some Al Cohn albums, I'll have to check out the stuff he led
>>60580561
some Lateef is always welcome
excited for next week's Impulse! themed Blindfold test, so got started on those already today and listening to some other Impulse! stuff as well
pianist, singer, composer, songwriter, beautiful voice
I think she's amazing

>>60581398
excellent album, Grimes is mindblowing as always. too bad this specific unit never recorded other stuff
>>60581398
Which other record labels would be good for the blindfold test.
>>60581843
Riverside
Muse
Steeplechase
Criss-Cross
Atlantic
Norgran records
Timeless
>>60581876
Pacific would be cool too. I'm sure jtg would love to do the criss cross and steeplechase ones. actually I'm surprised he hasn't done that already
>>60581843
Blue Note for sure
ECM
Verve, Riverside, Atlantic, Prestige maybe
>>60581944
oh yeah, forgot about this one
maybe one about Vogue would be interesting too
>>60581955
Blue Note was the first one they did but it would be good to do again
Any ragtime chart/album and artists suggestions? I want to step up my ragtime culture since I want to take piano classes
>>60582065
considering the insane amount of albums they released, maybe doing series by series would be interesting
like one about their 10" LPs
>>60582108
It might make it easier to guess
>>60582561
Strata-East is cool
>>60582644
indeed. the one you just posted is one of their best cover art imo
the album made me think of south african anti apartheid jazz, curiously
>>60581638
thats just terrible desu
>>60581638
that's pop
I'm really new to Jazz but I've given a couple of the essentials a listen
This one was my favourite, I really like the feel and mood of the whole thing, what should I check out next?
>>60583565
have you tried other Mingus albums ? he's got quite a load of interesting releases to check out
How did /blindfold/ go? My home internet has been down for just over a week now so I wasn't able to even get the tunes downloaded. It's a shame because the theme was really cool.
>>60580010
>What are you listening to these days and what are your thoughts on it?
I got a comp of Jelly Roll Morton stuff which I have just been loving. There's so much energy in the music.
>What underrated jazz albums do you want to recommend to to the jazz fans of /mu/?
Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald - Porgy and Bess
Not that it's underrated in the grand scheme or things, but there's a general lack of appriciate ion for Armstrong on /mu/.
>Musicians, what are you practicing/learning?
A lot of new stuff atom because the band I'm with is completely changing around set lists.
Of stuff I've suggested, Dave Brubeck's Take five and Art Blakey's Moanin' look likely.
>>60583721
My god, the autocorrect on my tablet just went to town on that one.
Not even gonna bother correcting stuff. Y'all know what I was trying to say.
>>60583620
I'm checking out mingus ah um now, and it's pretty great so far. I'll check out the image you posted after this. thanks
>>60583721
>How did /blindfold/ go?
I'll do it tonight as always, since monday is a quite heavy day for me and I come home pretty tired everytime. I still had work to do when I hit home yesterday so I bumped and followed the thread from time to time while working but I haven't listened to the tracklist yet
otherwise, what's your band's setting ? trio, quartet, quintet ? more ?
>>60583721
pretty quiet, I think it was just me and Blindfoldtest participating
it was a nice selection - a good showcase of even though a lot of people associate Monk very strongly with his angular playing style, his compositions can be done successfully in a wide variety of different ways
>>60583746
have fun !
>>60580010
frank rosolino quintet is really good, i'm not sure how it's rated critically, but I don't really hear people talk about it and I think it's pretty good
>>60583948
I had never heard of him until some days ago when I listened to pic related.I'd need to get more stuff he plays on to make any worthy opinion
>>60583838
I forgot to include in the track reveal that in that version of Evidence, the bassline was from Misterioso. A pretty cool mashup.
>>60583721
how many/what kind of horns in your band? what does your current setlist look like?
>>60581876
>>60581944
I'd love to do Criss Cross and Steeplechase themes in the future. Muse would be fun too although I don't have a huge collection of Muse records. They can be hard to find.
It sounds like Jazzpossu probably wouldn't enjoy those themes that much.

>>60584283
heh, I'd give them a fair shot
it's true that not many of my favorite albums are on those labels. I've been digging Lage Lund's Idlewild recently fwiw, though.
>>60584343
Nat Birchall is pretty great - I wish more people did Pharoah Sanders style spiritual jazz these days
My current favourite jazz album is Undercurrent by Bill Evans.
What are your favourite jazz albums, guys?
>>60584344
Idlewild was pretty good. What made that one stand out to you?
You might want to check out this one. It's one of my favorite guitar records on Criss Cross
>>60584536
I guess it's mostly that it just sounds so damn comfy, nice album to chill out and relax to.
>>60584608
Oh well if it's comfy you're looking for then you should give this a listen
>>60584741
Hein van de Geyn should truly record more and teach less, he's a great player
What's some atmospheric Jazz out there similar to pic related? Other Pat Metheny albums are welcome, too.
>>60584793
Some people really like teaching. Do you have any of his books?
>>60584914
nope, only a few records (the ones he made without Catherine are sadly quite hard to find)
