It can refer to a style of songwriting (Pop music which isn't necessarily popular), it can refer songs actual popularity (Pop radio stations play a lot of Hip-hop and R&B these days), or it can refer to a higher level distinction between Pop Music and Art Music (difference between transmission, etc.)
