Since it's a Mustang/Jaguar hybrid I want it to have the signature color of one of those cars, either Poppy Red or British Racing Green. I think the binding would go better with the British Racing Grene

Normally I'm not into BRG but on this guitar it seems appropriate. BRG, body contours, bound neck seems like the perfect classy retro vibe for crystal cleans, and cleans are what this guitar is all about

I do like the red better, but I also like the bound neck and I don't think the bound neck goes with the red. The binding is dressing up but the red is dressing down, it'd be like a tuxedo jacket and jeans.

I wish I wasn't autistic.

Here's my latest, the Squarewave Parade teaspoon. Its a window sampler/granular sampling gate/granular trigger. Takes CV in so i can use it while playing guitar with a momentary expression pedal. i love tape delay, i've got a roland re-201 space echo, echoplex ep-2, watkins copycat, dynacord echocord mini, fulltone TTE, and now that fulltone SS. there is a new cassette based delay unit being sold by some guy in newyork called the Spacecase Echo unit that I've been on the fence about grabbing. Depending on what cassette tape you use you'll get different sound...but you only get to use a tape once is my understanding? I went with the SS instead to wait and see how the spacecase hold up for people. initial reports have been positive from a guy i know...http://spacecasetapeecho.com/

>tape delay
I never understood the appeal. Delay is basically the only thing that I would say sounds better digitally, and if you go analog on delay I always felt you should just use regular analog delay.

Can you explain what makes tape delay the best (in your opinion)?

>>
>>60562481
sure, i like digital delay too but tend to prefer analogue delay for that dark bbd sound. well most tape delay units have a unique preamp voicing going for them. but mainly tape has this quality where the delays sit separate from the signal, and the way the repeats decay is totally unique to tape. tubed tape delay units are even more tasty cause you add in their delicious preamp tone. even the best digital tape emulation pedals i've tried all fail at getting that quality of the repeats right, while they can do a pretty good job of getting the preamp voicing...all that tape degredation etc. modulation on repeats is pretty cool but not like anything you'd experience from an actual tape unit...or for me anyways cause I keep mine in tip top shape. but that's another thing too, you get unique and random variations in the repeats with a real tape delay unit and that adds to their charm. the roland re-201 is pretty good example of this.

probably something based on the pt2399 chip that does things other pedals aren't doing. i think that is where digital should be focused instead of trying to emulate analogue sounds..it should be creating exciting new sounds/textures....but alas that's not what's happening. But, there are a lot of really innovative builders out there doing pretty incredible things with simple/cheap digital delay circuits...like the MWFX Judder delay/sampler/looper/glitch for example. The judder is built on the pt2399 chip and so is something like the catalinbread belle epoch which is just a tape emulation of the echoplex tape delay. The Judder is much more exciting. Seppuku FX Kompakt Kassette and Memory Loss are both based on the pt2399 chip and sound like nothing else being made. Even the exciting digital pedals being released like the new OTO BIM is just a reimagining of old digital 12 bit rack unit delays. Of course I've ordered one lol.

what about them?
>>
>>60563277
If you're going to spend that much money you might as well buy individual effects desu. With multi-effects you typically can only use one effect at a time and the real fun comes when you stack effects. Multi units usually have passable sounding modulation but their dirt/fuzz is horrific. But if you're hell bent on getting one, check on reverb.com for good prices on used units.
>>
>>60562717
>>60562868

Posted this at the end of the last thread so I don't think it got seen.
I'm trying to slave one head to another, but there's no preamp out on it. There's a Line out, but iirc isn't that too hot to put into Power amp input? It only has low and high gain inputs, so I can't input to low and use high as an output right? I'm not familiar without how to setup a bunch of assorted gear when I can't use a simple slave setup

Hey /mu/, Got a question for you.

So my girlfriends son is starting to really get into music and both of them told me that he really wants to start playing the guitar. She wants me to buy him one, until she can get the funds to pay me back, so my question is what is a good guitar to start with? I was thinking an acoustic to begin with.
>>
>>60563684
I buy them on Ebay or amazon, you can almost always find the gauge you want for around that price.

>>60564237
sounds like you want to run your signal into two seperate amps, right? well that is what an a/b box lets you do. it has one input and multiple outputs, sound like you would want one with two outputs.

Unless you need extreme shifts, they're pretty useless. And even then you can achieve better sounding results by just moving around the neck, looping, or tuning yourself differently.

Blue Orchid, White stripes. Anything that uses Whammy. playing a harmonization line. anything that uses octave up with whatever riff you are playing (MK Ultra - Muse)

there's tons, holy fucking shit.
>>
>>60564551
Didn't think about using it for octave up, but harmonization and whammy still can be replaced.

I found a CL listing for a Dr. Z M12 Head in pristine condition for $750. I'm in a punk/garage rock band and Dr. Z would be ideal since I use a lot of pedals and I hear they're great for that. Only thing is, this thing is only 12 watts and our drummer plays LOUD. I have a Marshall 1960A 4x12. Do you think I'll be able to cut through the mix with the M12 or should I let this one go?

a 4x12 isn't going to make a 12watt amp as loud as a 50watt amp.

Whammy is literally a whammy bar in the form of a pedal. But at least it makes sense, there's some stuff you can't really do without it, like tapping and doing some shifts.
But harmonization ? Unless you want to do some crazy counterpoint or going up when playing on the 20th fret, I don't see how it can't be replaced.

Since these teenage virgins can't seem to look beyond their memes and r9k logic, Ill help you out.

>Acoustic or Electric?

Its whichever he is interested in. There is a marginal benefit to electric for beginners because they tend to play easier, but its all about what he wants. Getting a first guitar is all about finding a balance between it being shitty enough that it isn't a big deal if they quit, but being quality enough that it sounds/plays decent enough that they don't get discouraged that they don't sound very good or that they have an unusually hard time playing.

In my opinion, the best route to go is with a solid quality used guitar. So long as he doesn't beat the hell out of it, you can resell it and get all your money back so long as you get it for a fair price and live somewhere with a decent used market. Selling it to a store will obviously be a large loss.

The next consideration is how old/big he is. If he is younger/smaller, you will want to look into guitars that are smaller and have a shorter scale length/fretboard width, along with skinnier necks.

Next consideration is what kind of music he likes. If you go acoustic, it doesn't matter as much, but electric guitars can sound quite different.

If you go electric, you will also need an amplifier. Amplifiers are equally, if not more, important to the quality of sound you get than guitars, so you want to have a proper ratio of money you are willing to spend between the two. When looking for a first setup, you generally want a cheap guitar that plays well and stays in tune (but doesn't necessarily sound good), accompanied by a decent amplifier.

You also need some basic accessories. Generally, you should be good to start with:
>tuner
>extra strings
>cable (electric)
>picks
>string winder

You will want to learn how to replace broken strings. Its very easy and there are a million tutorials out there. If you don't, then you will have to play a shop alot of money for nothing.
>>
>>60566002
Any reason you'd recommend the string winder? Not really worth the expense for a beginner with one instrument in my opinion. Going to be switching strings once every couple of months probably.
>>
So I recorded something and the bassist was way too loud, eating all the melody, is there any easy way to make it not as annoying without knowing anything about production?
>>
>>60566002
2/2

If you know somebody that plays, ask them to accompany you for an afternoon where you guys go look at some used guitars. They will hopefully know what to look for, but if you don't know somebody who can help, there are some major things to look for a far as quality. In my opinion, the biggest things, for a first guitar especially, are:

>tuners
they gotta be solid. if not, the guitar will come out of tune often and in addition to the hassle of tuning all the time, will make him sound like shit and he may not realize its because he is out of tune, which can be discouraging.

>bridge/nut
make sure they are solid and have no sharpness/edges that will break strings and cause problems.

>fret work
make sure the frets aren't worn too badly, aren't worn too unevenly, and don't stick out the side of the neck.

So long as those are in order, other problems will likely be minor enough to live with until he sticks with it long enough for an upgrade.

If you have any questions, I can probably answer them, provided I check the thread 404s.
>>
>>60566247
They are ridiculously cheap if you get one of the hand-operated plastic ones most shops have at the counter. You will eventually want one, so you might as well.
>>
>>60566267

>>
>>60566424

>>
>>60566267
Depends on how you recorded

Cutting down a certain frequency range isn't going to cut it if you recorded the entire thing on a single track
>>
>>60566267
Try:
A: Turning the bassist down on his amp(s)
B: Getting a better recording program.

Theory Question:

Somebody help me understand how song writers create interesting music that isn't perfectly in a key. I have VERY limited musical theory knowledge when it comes to chord progressions, etc.

How do I write something interesting outside of the major triads and notes of a key, because it seems like the second I leave that key it sounds horrible.

>>
>>60561362
Its a full set, 8 songs or something like that
>>
>>60567060
You need to understand how chords work and why certain progressions or cadences sound the way they do.

- First learn the major scale (the notes and degrees, not talking about scale patterns), key signatures and how to build triads and 7th chords.
- Then go on and learn the 3 main minor scales: natural, harmonic and melodic and how to build triads and 7th chords.
- Now it's time to learn chord degrees and progressions.
- Here's where the fun starts: extensions (sus, 9, 11, 13) and non-diatonic chords (Neapolitan minor, picardy third etc.)

It helps by teaching yourself theory with piano, since it's very logically laid out.

i've only been learning for ~2 months but i think that when you have some chords that are in 2 different keys you can use a passage with them so that the change won't be offputting.

idk, they worked fine. The retard on the store told me to just use the two working tubes left instead of buying until his manager told him he's an idiot. I should have just ran the two though. I could have saved ten bucks on a four pack of similar 34s on ebay.

It's really the store that pisses me off the most. They're mouth breathers who one up you about any information. They're hoarders of speakers with every wall of the store completely covered with vintage speakers. I went there with 100 bucks and they told me they won't even sell a speaker for under 150.

Craigslist. I actually recently joined a band after responding to their CR ad for a second guitarist.

Otherwise, going to local jams is helpful. I've watched a lot of groups form from weekly get-togethers at bars. I've also been approached in Guitar Center twice by guys who wanted me to audition for their groups after hearing me play. Both times I checked up on the bands online and they had recorded full EPs.

The opportunities are out there. People are looking.
