Both styles are focused on nostalgia but while synthwave ('80s inspired electro) and chillwave celebrates it, vaporwave is taking the piss.
It's like a reflection of what actually happened in the '80s. Culture became so shallow and superficial that the early '90s were really bland and commercial.

By and large that's true, but fortunately there's more and more vaporwave out there that's genuinely celebratory of the 80s and 90s.
The thing that defines vaporwave isn't so much the irony, it's the bittersweet flavor, that stems either from a sarcastic/comedic approach, or from a melancholic/nostalgic feeling depending on the record.
