Yeah this area is cable, so although I can get 120 megabit down, I don't get much past 1-2 megabit up. It's a bit annoying. Trying to upload some videos now, but it just takes such a long time.

I'm looking into archtops so i can get sexy jazz tones, what are some good options under 500$US? The Ibanez Artcore AF75 is currently at the top of my list. I'm sure I'll have to order online since my local shops don't carry any archtops.

People seem to like the Ibanez Artcores in that price range. The Epiphone Joe Pass Emperor II is another one that people seem to like. Or just get a cheap Tele because why not?

I have naked DSL. The "naked" part got a lot of laughs when I tried to switch to it. I kept asking anyway and the result was Internet with no line rental (and no phone service). I'm not in Australia but worth a shot.

Does anyone know why the Fender American Deluxe's are so cheap in the UK right now?

They're cheaper than the American standards at the moment.

I'm really tempted to buy one but I'm worried the price is low because the next run of the American Deluxe will have nicer finishes.
>>
>>60534807
Some shitty amp that came in my Squier box that my parents bought me when I was a teenager > Peavey Envoy something

And that's all I'll ever get because I live in Australia and good fucking luck being able to afford a valve amp here
>>
>>60535290
Naked DSL has been around in Australia for years. Telstra owns the vast majority of lines in Australia, so naked DSL plans are universally about $30 more expensive than a traditional ADSL service since whichever ISP you go with still has to pay line rental to Telstra.

They end up costing exactly the same as each other in most cases, Naked DSL services aren't entitled to CSG rebates and it'll take five times as long to fix any service interruptions since there's no required restoration time frame.

Also why would ANYONE change from HFC to ADSL or Naked DSL,. If I lived down the road from the exchange it'd ONLY be one fifth of the speed of an HFC service.

The connection in this house is literally thirty times faster than my last house, and almost five times the theoretical maximum speed of ADSL...

So I posted this in the last thread with no replies, does anyone know where I can get some George dennis picks? I use the 1.3 sharps and I fucking love them but I only have 2 of them, one of which is nearly worn, I used to use jazz 3's then I got these and I honestly don't feel like swapping back.

I guess? I'm not too keen on the specifics, but some people say thinlines give a more woodier tone, something like a bit of archtop flavor become of the fact that they're semi-hollow. I have no idea how this works because I've heard thinlines are much closer to solid bodies than archtops, so YMMV.

Posted this in a post your guitars thread, but I figured I'd ask here, too. Has anyone heard of this company or know anything about it? Says Richman Custom on the headstock. Made in Korea sometime in the late 90s or very early 2000s, has an ESP headstock shape, came with one of those single locking Floyds that threads the strings through what would normally be the saddle block screws in a regular Floyd. Pickups were no names but replaced them with an x2n in the bridge and a Duncan in the neck. I haven't been able to find much about the brand on Google, just an old ad for a Rhoads copy and a YouTube video with a green PRSish that may or may not be the same brand, the video is too low quality to see the headstock

Love them. Acoustic Archtop + floating minihumbucker is my favorite setup. I have a D'Angelico Excel reissue myself.

>>60534768
Buy used, are you in the US?

The AF75 is nice but you can get the AFJ91which has better build quality + electronics for around the same price.

If you're patient you can find an Eastman AR371 in that price range. That's what I would go for.
>>
why do you guys buy brand guitars and not just make your own? once you make your own guitar to your perfect specifications, you never go back, in my opinion

Different anon, but do you have any experience with one? I'm curious if they can get that thunky Joe Pass Joy Spring tone, but I hear that they're brighter and more "acoustic" sounding than actual ES-175s.

Schecter c1 exotic star, cayman blue
>>
>>60536432
Yup, I've played a few. I think you can get that tone as long as you use heavy flatwounds and a bassy sounding amp like a polytone or a bassman.

They use thinner laminates than modern ES175s so they do sound a bit more acoustic than current 175s but actually closer to 50s/60s vintage models. I think you can just as easily get that tone with the Ibanez I mentioned or any full depth hollowbody+flatwounds+ neck humbucker guitar though. It's not a very hard sound to achieve as long as the guitar has nice resonance imo

Experimented a little because lol I can't play so might as well act a bit avant-garde.

So I plugged my guitar into a old 60wat bass amp, took the headphone out from that into my 20wat guitar amp. Cranked the bass amp to full blast so it's kinda like a really big od/fuzz pedal. Sounds kinda cool, my playing doesn't give it justice.

Peavey Rage practice amp, horrible, used to dime the fucker playing pop punk w/ friends
Crate GX-120 half stack, played four shows
Mesa Rocket 440, played lots of shows and still have it. It's like a pumped AC30 in a 410 alnico speaker combo. Cheaper because 80's not popular Mesa model.
Dean Markley something. 4 el34s, I threw the Mesa on top of this into a 412 cabinet so I could look like T-Rex Electric Warrior at shows.
Univox U-1050, 4 6l6, guitar and bass inputs. Rock this with a Sunn 2x15. I repaired this and two Sunn heads and sold the Sunns for 600 a piece where the Uni would have probably gotten me about 200. It sounds as good.

Wondering how would it sound if somebody did the same thing with some +100w amp and maybe a better small practice amp and some effects pedal.

>>
Is it common for rock musicians to play completely clean?
>>
>>60537138
no, that would sound get pretty boring and quick
>>
>>60537150
Is it common to use no effects beyond a simple distortion pedal?
>>
>>60537249
Angus and Malcolm Young made their billions that way, so no
>>
What's the simplest way to block off a Floyd trem? I'm thinking of stacking coins taped together. Do I have to block both sides of the trem block, or will one side too? The objective is to be able to downtune and not have the bridge angle flying.
>>
>>60537262
So yes you mean?
>>
>>60537249
have you ever actually listened to music? it should be fairly clear that effects are standard fare.
>>
>>60537138
you have to be really good

most guitarists use effects to make up for how shitty they actually play

only really good players like johnny marr can play clean and get away with it
>>
>>60537347
Yes. I cocked that one up. Mea culpa.

But it is pretty common to have just a distortion pedal at most. Some just plug it straight into the amp with no pedals and just use the amps drive. It all depends on the player and what the songs are
>>
>>60537361
most guitarist use effects to create interesting sounds
>>
>>60537365
oh okay, that's what I figured

I like the simplicity of that
>>
So I have the option of getting a Dual Terror as my first amp head for likes little over $400, tried the amp out and like the clean and gain sounds, the thing is I'm trying to use lots of pedals and stuff and the amp doesn't have an effects loop. Anyone have any good experience with the amp to know how it holds up when it's set clean and using pedals for lots of gain? It's kind of a bummer I can't have reverb or delay really if I want to use the amps gain or anything, but it should be decent the other way? I like playing lots of punk and different kinds of metal but I also like making crazy fuckin' noises with pedals and stuff and getting kind of droney and doomy. Idk any opinions?
>>
>>60537439
the simplicity gets pretty boring pretty quick, but then again most guitarists are not recording artists or gigging musicians
>>
>>60537501
those amps are not good pedal platforms regardless of having an f/x loop or not.

Yeahbhe was insanely innovayive but I think that largely has to do with how skilled he was. I'm sure he used an array of pedals throughout his various recordings, but for some reason I thought that he bulk of his sound came from the Muff Pi.
>>
>>60537577
It's just kind of a bummer that it always seems like you have to choose between having a great pedal platform, and a great gain channel for metal tones or whatever. I really did like the clean and gainy sounds I got out of the thing, just the effects loop absence makes it tough
>>
>>60537701
>Hendrix
>notoriously known for putting the Fuzz Face on the map
>near iconic image of him stomping on the circular pedal
>"bulk of his sound came from the Muff Pi"

On par with attributing SRVs sound to his metal zone
>>
>>60537710
yeah with those lower watt/cost orange amps you don't get much headroom and you really only get one sound, granted its that orange sound and is great if thats what you're looking for but they are not at all versatile unfortunatly. I wouldn't let the absence of an f/x loop discourage you from running pedals into the amp though. Its all about what you like and only experimentation will lead you to what that actually is and be damned if the way you get there isn't "approved"
>>
>>60537742
lol
>>
>>60537701

hendrix used the craziest shit available, which by modern standards isn't that crazy because semiconductor tech was still early in its development

your options are like
distortion through diode and transistor saturation/clipping
filters (wah, controlled by foot and phaser, controlled by lfo)
the most advanced thing is the octaver which is just like a few op amps as comparators trying their best

BBDs weren't available yet so no delay, chorusing, flanging or vibrato in pedal form

his songs get really tiring to listen to, theres some good stuff, the slower motown style stuff like wind cries mary is nice to listen to once in a while, all along the watchtower is great

most of his solos and shit get really annoying to hear over and over...that screechy guitar masturbation. solo on AATWT is nice and melodic though.

his contributions to rhythm playing with introducing little embellishments on the chords is underrated and his lead playing is overrated. guys back in the early 50s had lead guitar playing technique that put Hendrix to shame.

His use of effects was cool but he really went overboard with them more often than not.

hows that for contrarian

extremely underrated rhythm player

all you have to do is listen to little wing or killing floor to hear his very unique rhythmic capabilities. it's like this blend of rhythm and lead, no one as far as i know did that before him.

people overrate his lead abilities because, despite it being just mostly pentatonic noodling, sloppy, and nonsensical, he had a unique voice when he would solo. basically within 5 seconds of hearing a hendrix solo, you know it's him playing. too many people mistake that 'voice' for quality

Not the guy you're responding to, but I'm pretty sure most people here are capable of playing Jimis rig without sounding like shit. Will they sound like Hendrix? Probably not. But, playing like Hendrix isn't the only way to make his gear sound good. Shit, Malmsteen uses a similar rig to Hendrixs signature (Strat through a Plexi though with less fx) and sounds completely different.

malmsteen has the worst strat tone i've ever listened to

mostly due to his scalloped fretboard
>>
>>60537909
A lot of his songs like Purple Haze, Fire, Foxey Lady, Wind Cries Mary, and Hey Joe are incredibly easy to play and impress people because it's Hendrix. While his solos are simple they're pretty hummable and thus memorable, which is more than what can said about a lot of other guitarists.

Not a fan of his later recordings which require tuning down a half-step. I only have one electric at the moment and I keep it in standard.

His RnB-influenced rhythm playing on tracks like Little Wing is impressive and challenging to get down at first. This is the real meat to Hendrix imo.

I used to love him when I was younger but lost respect after hearing a lot of live performances that were off. He was definitely hit or miss and should've took it easy on the drug and drink.

The recently released People, Hell and Angels has some great playing.

Question anons. I have no idea about anything guitar related but I have this lespaul electric guitar sitting in my room for about 5 years now without even touching it. would there be a chance that this guitar isnt functioning anymore? or is that not how electric guitars work and the functionality would eventually rely on the cable and amp and not on the electric guitar itself?

>>
>>60539508
You wot m8? How does a scalloped fretboard affect tone negatively? I'm genuinely curious, seeing as the strings are still being pressed against the frets, and let's be honest, if your strings are touching wood when you fret them you need to loosen your grip before you give yourself carpal tunnel.
>>
>>60539727

Govan's pretty much the only virtuoso guitarist I can listen to full albums by. He actually has variety as opposed to just let's play everything fast and weird literally all the time etc.
>>
>>60539727
Paul Gilbert sounds better with his Ibanez Fireman that has the injector pickups. That white guitar with the painted on f-holes sounds shit though.
>>
>>60539731
the bigger the frets, the more metallic you're going to sound. the less wood there is underneath it the less sound gets absorbed.

that's why most scalloped fretboards sound like that, they don't sound anything like jumbo frets
>>
>>60539650
I heard some very similar licks from Hendrix on that more recent posthumous release. That main theme is straight from Hendrix.
>>
>>60539731
If you're using really tiny ass frets, the string may touch the fretboard.
Also I'm guessing it does impact when playing on a fretless instrument. Those vigier fretless guitars have a crazy tone

Paul's moving into more of a Blues/Jazz kind of direction with his influences lately, which is fine. I mean, he's always had blues influences (refer to Guitars From Mars Vol 2). I just don't like it when great rock and metal players are embarrassed to be great rock and metal players and shy from the term "shredding" or being referred to as a "shredder." I guess they just don't want to be pigeonholed.
>>
>>60539798

The singing that Paul tried on the rest of the album was lame and his lyrics were corny. But I appreciate him trying to branch out with jazz elements in parts of his tracks as well as incorporating odd time sigs. This piece stood out for me.
>>
>>60539749
Same, I find Govan and Vai extremely listenable, particularly when Vai isn't singing. His "Sound Theories" album was an early important listening milestone for me because it got me experimenting with melodies before I knew much music theory and opened up my ear quite a bit.

Shawn Lane's earlier work is less appealing to me than the work he was doing with Eastern fusion right before he died.

Tbh none of the neo-classical shredders really do anything for me anymore since I discovered jazz.

>>
>>60539798
It's because dedicating yourself to playing single notes as fast as possible while using Paganini's runs(slower even) is not an honourable endeavor and being embarrassed by it is natural.
The guitar is great at polyphony, second only to keyboard, organ, and harp.
>>
My god you guys have terrible taste in music lol

>>60539798

Of course it does on a fret less. You're fingerings the notes onto bare wood. But unless you're using one of the fretless wonders, or a true fretless guitar, and a majority of people don't, my point still stands about loosening your grip if your string is touching wood. Besides, regardless of what you're using you should only be using the bare minimum of pressure needed to make the string ring out. That's the point of scalloping these days, is to encourage a loosening of grip.

Most of Lane's earlier work hasn't aged well, I agree. Lots of those key/synth sounds and reverb-y guitars are VERY '80s. But I still find it fascinating on a technical level (I've definitely copped a few of his wide-stretch diminished licks) as well as musical level: to me, his phrasing is truly only matched by a handful of guitar players (Holdsworth, Govan, Vai, Greg Howe) and it's worth taking some time to dissect his material as an exercise in ear training.

Work on finger flexibility. I'm assuming this is the first time you've tried to play a chord like that, so naturally it's uncomfortable to do. Stretch your fingers out more than usual a d farther than normal, and use the riff as an exercise to get your fingers use to it and develop muscle memory. I had this same problem when first learned some shit with stretches like Floods by Pantera, Spirit Crusher by Death, or that ridiculous stretch part in the Tornado of Souls solo.

Save your money, buy analog pedals.

The only effects that don't sound like shit digitally are delay and chorus, and if you want to buy a $200 delay pedal you should just get an EHX Memory Man with Hazarai.

Multi-FX are cool at first but then the longer you play you'll wish you had made the investment in pedals. Just buy used: most used pedals can be bought for around 60% of their retail value new and most manufacturers build them like tanks.
