It's a decent fusion record, but there is better Zappa fusion: Waka/Jawaka, Grand Wazoo, Burnt Weeny Sandwich, Weasels Ripped My Flesh. I never understood the hype for Hot Rats when the aforementioned records are just so much better to me.

While I agree with you on many levels concerning your opinion, I believe that one of the reasons Hot Rats is so popular is because it's easily accessible to the casual listener unlike the other albums which tend to go into a certain space that might frighten the less adventurous. The same can be said for Overnight Sensation, and Apostrophe.
