His timing was pretty off sometimes
while Castillo was a pretty solid drummer, he was too fast. he sped up the entire QOTSA repertoire, obviously with Homme's approval but listen to any Castillo era live stuff vs. any other drummer's live stuff with QOTSA and you'll see Castillo was just up tempo for the band. Grohl was probably their best drummer since he was far more technically proficient than Castillo but he also has excellent tempo and pocket for the QOTSA stuff he played on. Their current drummer, the guy from Mars Volta, Theodore? is their 2nd best drummer. He's probably their most technically proficient drummer but he also has good tempo feel and doesn't speed through the songs. I saw QOTSA during their last tour on halloween, I saw Theodore fuck up more than I thought I would see such a pro drummer fuck up, I think during Song for the Dead he fucked up the tom fills and in another song he dropped his sticks, etc. I was surprised he wasn't as tight a player as I had seen prior, but still their 2nd best drummer. I'm surprised Grohl hasn't at least played a one-off show with QOTSA since 2002.
Castillo was probably my favorite QOTSA drummer, his timing was off sometimes, but his live performances were mostly wild and provided a very cool contrast with some of the songs.
