It's hard to stay focused man, but for me I like to think to myself "Alright I'm gonna finish a song today/tonight that HAS to happen." If I'm in the middle of a song and feeling a bit burnt I'll take a small break and fuck around on youtube, play some playstation while listening to what I have arranged so far, or listen to some records for possible samples while chilling.

think away from your daw what it is you need to do in the daw.
example: "im gonna work on this melody idea. how should i record it?"

that always helps me. spending the first 30 minutes in the daw answering a question is a good way to just dive right in.

>>60499743

think about it this way. recording used to be EXPENSIVE. before you did ANYTHING the studio had to schedule what you were doing, when, and for how long. even now adays if a band is gonna go record an album, you sit down and say "okay thursday we are gonna work on drums so we need this signal chain, these microphones, and plan for this".

it is extremely difficult to feel the underlying pressure when you are fucking around in a DAW in your bedroom. sometimes thinking about the bigger picture of "what do i want, when do i want it done and how do i do that" keeps momentum afloat.

just keep working and getting small victories.
>>
>>60499828

im trying to figure out what to get my roomy for christmas and i think something music related would be pretty thoughtful but im still having trouble deciding on something. we're both just hobbyist/bedroom producers. he does more folksy acoustic singer songwriter stuff. he's already got an interface, bunch of microphones, a blue usb microphone/recorder thing, keyboard, and guitars.

i dont wanna trash this too much but here's my thoughts

there's too many different melodic lines going on and they don't all lock in nicely
you can hear the bar lines cause everything sorta stops - there's like zero release on the synth envelope

the kinda middle easterny little plinky melody is ok
the square wavey bass thing is ok
the drums are ok

the sawtoothy synth thing is really messy and the part needs to be simplified or taken out

the longer notes panned to the right i think you could turn into two note chords that change slower?

i think the tempo could stand to go a bit faster too

the rhodes-y sound is completely out of phase, which is not only extremely annoying, it also means it's COMPLETELY gone when the track is played in mono. always double check your mixes on mono compatibility, this is a no-go
the overall mix feels very dry and static, experiment more with different room sizes as you build up and take away again elements.
in terms of spectral balance, timbres and compression it's fine
I don't know what to thing about that random ending, though

you don't need to completely invert it to make it wide, maybe just delay one side 10-20ms-ish till you like the wideness and it still works in mono

The envelope level knob, also known as the amount knob , quite simply controls the amount that the envelope (controlled by the adsr faders you see in filter module A and B ) affects the filter. Depending on your envelope settings it can sort of sound like a wet/dry knob too I guess, although that's not what it is.

I have the apc20 ( old version) and then build quality is much better than the vestax vcm 600 that I also have. That said, if you feel that it will fit your workflow then go for it but if you don't need all these buttons, faders and knobs then I have to say that it is a bit expensive.

Is anyone familiar with drum machines? What is the best one you've come across? I've been looking to get one to play bass guitar over and i want to make some post-punk, industrial, noise rock stuff and i like the sound that the Alesis SR18 has in this song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dI_D_cnrGco

I like that the Alesis SR18 has an instrument input, a headphone jack, as well as the option for foot switches. Are there any other drum machines like this but maybe have a better user interface or maybe a wider variety of sounds? What about the Korg ER1, or is that mostly used for bleeps?

Would really appreciate some help here.

If you want to really split the signal, you should do chain, one wet, one dry, so you can change the levels independently.

nice rhythms son. makes me think of mars volta and some of the more insane retro console games.
Drumming sounds a bit too programmed though, maybe get some rides and snare slightly off the beat, so it still sounds 'on' but more natural. some tom fills are painfully triggered, might want to invest in some decent drum kit library or pay close attention to those fills and their automation / exact timing. stormdrum has a good variety of electronic and acoustic kits and other random sounds / metals / large percussion

Sounds like shitty rpg boss music. Your melody is like a bassline and then you have this clusterfuck of signals over the top. Your drums, where to begin.

1st song youve made?
>>
>>60507347
not bad for the genre, you need to alternate that kick pattern though, and it shouldn't sync up with the "urvything" sample, try to have things happening in layers, the kicks doing one pattern, the samples doing another, complementary pattern, then high hats doing something else. Its a fine balance between hold basic interest and over cluttering. Usually about 2 or 3 patterns simultaneously is a bare minimum. most well produced electronic pieces with have up to 6 to 10 contrasting or complimentary ideas happening at any given moment, with minimal techno ranging from 1 - 6 ish different ideas. Some more complex electronic music would have many more layers, stockhausen or babbit or nancarrow.

I hate the lead synth from1:30, stacatto (short notes) should never really be a lead, you can use them to help accentuate the long notes in a lead, but you really need to work on writing melodies. Try singing or whistling something and recording it, then working out the melody in your DAW from the recording. Can lead to much more natural sounding melodic ideas. Mixing and effects use is decent, I would probably chose a different kick sample though.

I'd actually consider making drums less convincing instead, maybe a bit of bitcrushing or drum machine samples or something.

you should be able to find a sounfont player, most DAWs have them or you can find a free one.

The string ensemble that comes with FL is the "papelmedia string ensemble"

Is there a way to completely seperate MIDI and BPM in ableton? When you change BPM in ableton the entire midi signal changes too, that shit is annoying, especially because i want to change tempo in the middle of the song sometimes. Also, because of Ableton tying everything you do to the BPM i almost feel pressured to stay on one static BPM all the time. It really cripples my creativity.

Is the first statement a question, as it has a question mark after it I'm guessing it is?
It's just a little bit confusing as your second statement is implying you already know and even say a controller and DAW does everything and even faster...and the first statement of asking is implying you don't own a hardware sampler...fuck I'm confused.
Just carry on using a DAW and controller for your sampling then as it's better obviously.

I'm looking at it as well, especially old Akai's, but dumping my samples from my computer to floppy's or CD's just to load it up on hardware seems like a waste of time.

If I had the money I would, but I want more hardware synths than I want a sampler.
>>
>>60516299

I use my sampler quite a lot, but in all honesty I just use it as a sampler so I sample stuff onto it rather than having a huge library of sounds on it, or I will have a drum kit that I like to use on a floppy. It's no hassle really, I'm pretty chilled when I go into the studio so I'm not in any hurry that I need access to all my samples immidiatly.

not my type of music so no comment, technically you have a huge problem with your master compressor causing 'pumping'.
when the kik drops it's dragging the level of the track down momentarily right when you want maximum punch, stop over compressing, preserve dynamic range.

I want to get something compact under $800 to make stuff from minimal techno to chill drum and bass, away from the computer. Preferably battery powered but doesn't have to be, basically a small groovebox with some kind of sampling function and synthesis (basic filtered chords, plucks, subs, etc nothing too complex).

Was looking at the Electribe sampler but I'm not too sure on the synthesis side of it. And I like the Teenage Engineering OP-1 but it seems expensive and limited for what it is, the workflow seems rather slow and menu driven.

Should I just go for the Electribe sampler? Anything else I should look at before I buy?
