Pinkerton's great entirely by accident. Cuomo let way too much of his true self and personality show on it than he meant to. You're SUPPOSED to sympathize with him and agree, but it's actually a fucking amazing character study on someone who desperately needs to be loved, but is utterly incapable of reciprocating it, and will never receive it. And despite spending the entire album blaming it on a thousand different reasons, there's a definite undercurrent that he knows that its his fault, but he'll never own up to it and take the steps to actually improve himself, which history's since proven correct.
It's like an ancient tragedy where the protagonist ALMOST reaches the epiphany that all his problems stem from himself, but never makes the final realization.
