I felt like the whole whisper singing thing is a lot more prevalent on C&L than AoA. It's there on tracks like Futile Devices but his voice is very strong on parts like the beginning of impossible Soul, I Walked, Vesuvius, Bad Communication, and a majority of the title track.

It depends on what you're looking for, of the early albums Filth is undoubtedly the best.
When it comes to the mid era, The Great Annihilator has a far more consistent sound than most albums, with just generally better, less self indulgent song writing.
For a long sprawling album, the seer captures atmosphere better than Soundtracks For The Blind ever did, without shattering the feeling with misplaced
