I think people didn't like the sudden departure from the worldbeat aesthetic. The soundscapes of Maya are industrial and hostile. It also makes little to no attempt at being nice and cohesive (going from something like Steppin Up to It Takes a Muscle within a few tracks was always gonna get slaughtered by critics). But the sonic contradictions are obviously intentional.
