yeah, to be fair i was talking about themes/lyrics/style rather than purely vocal technique, I guess that could be confusing, but IMO "whiny" transcends just the audible act of whining if you get me, and yeah I do agree that "whiny" is normally used to dismiss (which I think is stupid, whining has its place), that's not to say that the things being whined about aren't serious, lots of screamo deals with very serious subject matter, but the genre is so campy that it just generally feels... whiny hahah

i get you man. yeah these bands usually use their songs to get things off of their chest which as you said, is not a bad thing at all. For christs sake I Have Dreams were a different band and formed after one of their members died in a car crash in an attempt to deal with the pain of losing one of their best friends. The power that gave their creativity made for some incredibly emotionally powerful songs.
