Are there any female pop-rock singers or bands from the 60s?

Are there any female pop-rock singers or bands from the 60s?

Most of the female stuff from that time was Traditional pop, or R&B, like Aretha Franklin. I'm looking for something that sounds more like The Beatles or The Beach Boys, but with a chick in the lead.

Also if you into jazz from around that period you may like Return to Forever and/or Astrud Gilberto:

Also not really jazz but that mellow lounge-type vibe:

It normally doesn't work because they sing in the wrong octave for the guitar and bands weren't playing that high up on the neck so this is an issue unless if they find a way to fix it..

The being said the guys are normally ripping off the chicks musically for example the The Ronettes were doing Pete Sounds before Pet Sounds. Then there were artists like Staple Singers, The Supremes, The Shirelles, Fairport Convention, Odetta, Joan Baez, Jackie DeShannon, and stuff like that.

There really weren't any bands other than the two you mentioned that were doing work in that particular niche of that particular quality, led by men or women.

Most of the stuff was just derivative and trying to ride the hype train.

Women, however, made some damn fine music during this time, typically in the genre you cited previously. Aretha Franklin's stuff she recorded with the Swampers in particular is great: Chain of Fools, Never Loved a Man, etc is really quality. Kind of interesting that Aretha's best work was brought on by working with a bunch of white rednecks from Alabama.

Check out some Janice (Big Brother and the Holding Company), and delve into some other stuff like Delaney and Bonnie, though it's more roots-focused.

There's a reason greats like Clapton and Duane Allman toured with these two. They're severely underrated..

I think it's the 60s but Eastern Europe was always a few years behind the trends back then.

Anyone got more cute retro rock chick dancing like this?

Can I recommend Brazilian music from the 60s to you, OP? I think you'll very much be happy to discover this stuff. Not the Beatles or The Beach Boys, but its own very special and amazing sort of thing.

Os Mutantes had male singers and a female singer, she doesn't always take centre stage but her voice is lovely to hear whenever it appears. The track Don Quixote from their second album is a good showcase for her vocals:

In terms of female-fronted pop / rock from Brazil though, nothing comes close to Gal Costa. Her early albums were described as unnerving and psychedelic, though they're always uplifted by the timeless sweetness of her voice.

A true treasure, I hope you make the effort to explore the full range of her recordings, OP.
