Alright. So I'm doing my best to "get" this shit.
From what I can gather, it's supposed to be a nuanced critique of Capitalism and American consumerism, right?
At first I thought it was just some type of meme subculture that I had no interest in whatsoever that revolved around 1980s aesthetics and shitty elevator music. But now I'm hearing that it's literally the most pretentious fucking thing I've ever heard of in my entire life.
But I can't stop listening to this shit.
One thing I don't get is how it's purportedly supposed to be eerie and make the listener somewhat uncomfortable.
Bullshit, this shit is groovy as all hell and it's even better when I'm stoned.
I watched this video to try and further comprehend what I was getting myself into
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PdpP0mXOlWM
This only solidified the idea in my mind that venturing into this unknown territory will hold ill effects for my uninformed and ignorant mind.
Help me understand this shit without developing a superiority complex or turning into a pretentious hipster fuck.
>>
>>60382115
People only make it pretentious should they want to. For me it's literally just all about the imagery. It gives me memories of my first Windows 95 computer and when I spent a week in Hong Kong. It's a cool mix of nostalgia and soundscape.
>>
whats a vaporwave album worth going out of my way to listen to? looking for something with an interesting story behind it

>>60380335
very unappealing to my eyes, looks like a mediocre album i would ignore
>>
>>60382115
I've never look at vaporwave as a commentary on capitalism in the real world. To me, it's much more enjoyable as a work of fiction that presents a world that is a capitalist dystopia (where applicable, of course. Not all vaporwave involves any themes on capitalism at all). Honestly, it's much more interesting from this worldbuilding perspective than it is from a political soapbox perspective.
>>
>>60382193
did happen to spend anytime on the Hong Kong Express?
>>
>>60382115

Did you watch that entire video? It explains it pretty well, including why it isn't just a social critique thing. It's an aesthetic that can be used to cover a social topic, but it can also be used to do things that have nothing to do with social criticism.
>>
>>60382115
Many vaporwave artists such as Vektroid and Internet Club have stated that their music is not meant to be a critique on capitalism and consumerism.

>>60382115
you are too stupid
>>
>>60382193
>>60382285
>>60382318
>>60382401
Okay, so socio-politcal commentary set aside, one thing I'm unable to do well is accurately draw the concepts of the artist's intention from the music itself.
With no lyrics and most of the time only an aesthetic to follow, It's hard for me to understand what the artist is trying to say without deliberately looking for an explanation online.

i use it as a kitschy celebration of consumerism. i think that the late 80s to early 2000s were a really interesting time period, especially in terms of how technology shaped society. computers, cassettes, crappy advertising, and music were all related. i grew up (even though i'm born in the mid nineties) listening to a lot of 80s pop when i was in elementary and middle school and have always been fascinated by thrift shops in run down suburbs. i would go to my uncle's basement and stare at all of his old computers and synthesizers and stereo equipment and he was really into terribly cheesy jazz fusion. i see vaporwave as a celebration, more than it is a critique, of that sort of weird period in time.

wisdom, bro
>>
>>60382115
I love the imagery. I still hardly know what it's all about, but the idea of floating in a neon world with palm trees, demolished malls, and busts swirling all over the place is THE idea of comfy for me.
I cannot stand people who think it's the next type of music, though. It's cool to listen to and all, but if you're really trying to get credibility by thinking you're cool because you frequent Floral Shoppe, you're delusional.

tl;dr just dive in head first and see what sticks.
>>
>>60382636

>I don't know how to make vaporwave but I'd love to do it.

Have you tried slowing down Dianna Ross tracks and then posting them online alongside pictures with Greek statues, geometric shapes, and Windows 95 graphics?
>>

Off the top of my head, there are three separate goals that vaporwave albums tend to aim for. Keep in mind these are neither mutually exclusive.

>simulating the feeling of discovery
Think of this as analogous to the found-footage genre of film. It makes you speculate about who made it (as in a fictitious character, not the actual artist), and for what purpose. See "utopian virtual", "faux-utopian", and "broken transmission" in pic related

>imagery
These try to put you in the middle of the world it builds rather than the sidelines. See "hypnagogic drift", "mallsoft", "futurevisions", and "late night lo-fi".

>80s nostalgia
This one is pretty self explanitory. It makes use of sounds, either sampled or original, that resemble music from the early yeas of home computing. See "eccojams", "VHS pop", "future funk", and "vaportrap".
>>
>>60383112
>neither mutually exclusive
...nor always found together. That's what I wanted to write.

Its not about critique. A lot of people like the imagery because it sort of resembles an obscure and surreal perspective of the 90's and 80's, whether it be with old pepsi commercials or windows 98 computers.
Thats what it is, surrealist ambience with a hint of nostalgia.
