I go to loads of shows and have been for over decade and I never wear earplugs. I don't think you have to a "pussy" to wear them, just as I got older I started standing further and further away from the speakers. Usually the area near the bar is loud but not ear damaging loud. I just cant wear them because they muffle the music and I would rather not be close to the stage then have the distortion.

I'm using the most popular on Amazon at the moment I think, Alpine, usually with the middle silver filters. Carrying some crappy foamy ones around with me too.
Got tinnitus in left ear from standing close to the left speaker at a early small indoor gig. Massive regret, I don't fully understand how it got so permanently damaged but I figure all ears are different with different levels of sensitivity.
Advice: follow your instinct. If it feels too loud, like a slightly deep ache during a show (that's what I experienced but I put up with it, didn't think it was too bad and no one around with plugs in), DON'T just put up with it. Move out or plug in.

I am however talking about the kind of earplugs that only decrease the volume, not the quality of the music. They're not cheap (KIND) but definitely worth the money. I still go fucking hard at concerts, rehearsals and clubs and occasionally get made fun of by people who just don't know better but tinnitus at 25 is nothing I'm looking forward to.
