I've just recently got into metalcore thanks to Issues. Was just hoping for any recommendations in this genre.

Why?

invent, animate is cool
so is erra
stuff like issues is headed down a dead end path honestly but their ep was fun and tyler has a great voice. Swancore and Sumeriancore usually sums up the best of the core stuff though.

Funny thing is, Stand up and Scream, The Fallout and Numbers are the only bad albums on that list.

Early 2000's metalcore was pretty great in retrospect

I pretty Make Them Suffers first album. Also Northlane are amazing. New album is garbage though.

This band that popped up and disappeared. Makes me sad because I liked them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=noB-J6MN_eQ

Maybe. I still consider it metalcore. Bands like TDEP are mathcore but they're still definitely metalcore too.

It's pretty cool/easy to hate metalcore, or whatever metal trend is in now.
A bunch of it IS bandwagon jumping garbage, but I don't think that merits disregarding entire genres.
>>
>>60360854
pretty safe to assume that only the people in this thread enjoy this stupid edgy shit
>>
>>60360900
Agreed, there's a lot of bad, and I really mean A LOT of bad.

However I find the good metalcore bands tend to be good because their influenced by other genres.

For example August Burns Red, Parkway Drive, ERRA and Northlane are all proggy as fuck and that layer of technicality is really what makes them shine
>>
I went to a CC/cattle decapitation show recently and had to suffer through one of these bands and the fucking ninja arm swinging faggots touching themselves (and no one else) in the pit. Nothing against the dudes playing, more power to em, get those live shows hell yea, but stay the fuck away from fucking death metal LEGENDS with your ugly core shit. I almost bought a core not gore shirt just to wear while they were playing. Sorry, not really, but yes this is the only genre that i can honestly say, in my opinion, fucking sucks all together.

>>
>>60361169
They're one of my favorite prog bands so it burned a bit.

But whatever, to each their own I guess.
>>
>>60361199
i applaud their ambition but they can't write a song for shit. they toss so many unrelated riffs in that i just tune out because none of it adds up to anything
>>
>>60361276
I definately have to disagree with you

Colors is one of my favorite albums of all time. All of the change ups in that album feel nice and smooth, especially considering that at multiple times you'll just be jamming out and suddenly their music will make you feel like you're floating through space, or relaxing on a beach. They played a phenomenal attention to atmosphere in that album.

Maybe that style of prog just isn't you're thing
>>
>>60361432
Oh, they stitch together the ideas well, it just feels aimless. The definition of a "cool story bro" album. Journal do the same style but feel much more goal-oriented, with better climaxes and more memorable riffs. Maybe the whole stream-of-consciousness songwriting with sudden unexpected changes is appealing to some people but it just makes me wonder what the point of the album is. The worst part is that when they land on a nice melody, that always gets unceremoniously abandoned in favor of the next genre-shift.
>>
>>60361547
Except for the fact that it's a concept album, and if you were to familiarize yourself with the concepts behind the album a lot of the genre shifts make more sense.

Let's just agree to disagree though

Definitely gonna check out Journals though, are you claiming they're a better version of BTBAM?
>>
>>60361036
Northlane's first two albums are going to be classic metalcore albums one day. That's just in my opinion though.
>>
>>60361656
Colors isn't a concept album. Some of the songs on it are related to the Night Owls concept but for the most part the songs tell individual stories. Which makes it more odd that they decided to make the album one song. At least, that's what I remember. If you think you know the story of Colors, feel free to tell me, since their lyrics give me zero idea what the fuck is going on.

And yeah, I highly recommend Journal. Their only album so far, Unlorja, is a concept album about a JRPG-esque video game plot. They quote some famous NES melodies in the guitar work and the interludes have a very video game music-y vibe, so be aware that it's very nerdy. They also have a much more aggressive mathcore-y edge.
>>
>>60361814
>a concept album about a JRPG-esque video game plot
>be aware that it's very nerdy
>They also have a much more aggressive mathcore-y edge.

Sounds like an album that was written for me

As for Colors, I got it a little wrong, yes the songs tell their own individual stories but the conceptual stuff comes from the song writing throughout sharing similar themes and whatnot.

I must've been thinking of a different album earlier
>>
>>60361974
it's ok, The Parallax 1 and 2 do have an overarching concept and a pretty cool one. You're correct in spirit.
>>
>>60361993
Anyways, you like Protest The Hero so I guess you're cool in my book
>>
>>60362092
Protest the hero are God tier.
>>
>>60362141
I feel lucky to be Canadian because I get to see them on their Keiza tour
>>
>>60362185
I would love to see them. I missed TDEP earlier this year because I didn't have a job at the time. I was pretty pissed off.
>>
>>60362092
Mostly just their debut sadly. They're a very skilled band but their later material is way too maximalist and full of as many notes as they could cram in. I'm very particular about what in the genre I like, but I admit Kezia is really fun. Lots of influence from 80s and 90s prog metal, which isn't too common among progcore bands. Feels sort of Watchtower/Coroner-ish at points.
>>
>>60362258
I personally like all their albums.
>>
>>60362466
I like their later material in small doses but I can't listen to a full album, because they just never stop sweep picking and falsetto-ing and it gets fucking exhausting.
>>
>>60362573
Fair enough. It took a while to grow on me, but now I love it. Enjoy it as much as you can though.
>>
>>60362611
Do you know Corelia, Dioramic or Mandroid Echostar? Those bands are very PTH-inspired, you may like them. Corelia do fantastic choruses and I can't wait for their full-length to come out.

No I haven't heard of them. I'll check them out.

Can anyone recommend me something without vocals I consider shit tier? I like the concept, of this genre, it's sort of mindlessly fun to listen to, but absolutely can not get past the vocals. (Anything that isn't actual singing is shit tier imo, sorry if that sounds ignorant or upsets you but it's definitely an opinion.)

For example, I absolutely adore Haken, but don't like BTBAM cause of their vocals though the bands are extremely similar.

Example of song I like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3NdXqroDz9c
>>
>>60363081
do you dislike harsh vocals in general or just metalcore harsh vocals?
>>
>>60363134
Anything with harsh vocals
>>
>>60360681
>numbers is a bad album
ehhhhhhhhhhh.
there's a lot of regrettable things i used to listen to as a scene kid, but i can go back to numbers and jive on tyler carter's vocals and the general instrumentals
>>
>>60363175
Well, that's something you'll have to open yourself up to. Harsh vocals fit with the timbres of metal instrumentation in a way that clean vocals don't. They also require a lot of skill to execute well. Yes, they sound ugly and inhuman, but that can add to the impact of the music. They can express a range of emotion that clean vocals aren't suited for.

You may think they're not musical because they lack tonal qualities (this isn't always true), but vocal rhythms play a very important role in black and death metal.

Honestly it sort of is ignorant for someone who supposedly likes progressive music to decide that a certain vocal style isn't within the acceptable range of experimentation. (I mean, prog hasn't actually been progressive and has been catering to unadventurous wimps for decades now, but you get my point.) You need to realize that harsh vocals are a deliberate choice and not something people do because they can't "sing right" or whatever.

I should have clarified that they're more metallic hardcore haha. They're definitely a hardcore band, just with metal elements incorporated, especially in terms of vocals and guitar tones. I thought I would include them just so OP could hear the beginnings of the genre for himself.
>>
>>60363495
meant for >>60363413
>>
>>60363533
Fair. Good list otherwise, I dunno if it'd appeal to a fan of Issues considering how wildly the genre has changed since the early '00s but it's worth a shot.

I think mid-2000s metalcore like KSE, earlier Underoath, and MS is a good bridge to those bands.
>>
>>60363296
I did no way say that they aren't good, or didn't fit the music, I just simply stated I don't enjoy them in the least. I hear many many bands with non clean vocals considering my best friend is super into this stuff (Issues, BTBAM, Tesseract, Black Tongue, Upon A Burning Body, etc) and have slightly warmed up to some of them, but was just asking for music of this style that would cater more to my preferences. I didn't say it was bad objectively, but for me it's not preferred subjectively.

Also, to that jab at recent progressive music I reply: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zk9Wk96yzBY
>>
>>60364075
Well, I can't think of much metalcore with exclusively clean vocals, though Corelia and recent PTH material is fairly close. Last Chance to Reason and Art By Numbers are prog metal bands with some metalcore element which may be appealing.
