I love reggae. Bob Marley, the list could go on
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jkmmZZfK-I
This album is great
I have a listening list lined up but I don't know shit about reggae right now
>>60352142
pass the dutchi brava
Nope but I do.
Funny, /mu/ talks shit about reggae, ska and dub all the time and then creams their collective undies over post punk which was largely influenced by reggae. Pitchfork simply hasn't told /mu/ how to enjoy reggae yet I suppose.
>>60352193
Or hip hop, which is a direct subgenre of reggae.
>>60352193
>can't like post-punk without reggae
>>60352208
>hip hop is a subgenre of reggae
/mu/ is feeling special today
>>60352208
Yup. Even a lot of My Bloody Valentine stuff has very clear dub influence and there's 20 Loveless threads every day.
When someone shit talks reggae I instantly know they're a pleb.
>>60352193
>Pitchfork simply hasn't told /mu/ how to enjoy reggae yet I suppose.
This. I'm not into reggae myself but this is so true. Well, I'm sure the time will come.
>>60352193
Fuck I didn't know Pitchfork had that much power in the "indie" world. I guess since it's a western publication it's more biased towards western music kinda like rolling stone and dadrock
>>60352221
You can dislike reggae but calling an irredeemable genre of music, which is the attitude of a large potion of /mu/, is bottom-tier pleb speak. Real fucking bottom tier.
>>60352221
Made by a Jamaican, who was a DJ in Jamaica, using Jamaican sound system DJ music, with Jamaican MC'ing, the only thing new was the merry go round.
>>60352142
not really
one time i had to bump a reggae thread by myself for hours to keep it alive whilst i uploaded an album for another anon
shame too cause i'm sure a lot of you guys would enjoy it
>>60352253
Yeah I've heard of Kool Herc
Not everything started by a Jamaican is reggae for ever more
post your favourite authentic jamacian reggae songs
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=StlMdNcvCJo
>>60352277
I didn't say it was reggae, I said it was a direct reggae subgenre. Jamaican sound system subgenre if that makes you feel less insecure against the /mu/ weed memes.
>>60352296
you don't understand the meaning of the word subgenre
>>60352301
>A subcategory within a particular genre
Makes perfect sense. He was doing the exact same thing he did as reggae DJ in Jamaica, the only difference was he moved house and added some breaks.
>>60352290
WHY THE FUCK DO I REMEMBER THIS?
>>60352304
if hip hop is a reggae subgenre then it is reggae
you're literally a retard
>>60352320
Everything is a subgenre.
>>60352320
>getting pissy over definitions
Quit deflecting, pleb.
worst genre
>>60352320
It is. Its a direct subcategory of reggae.
>>60352336
>hip hop is a reggae subgenre
>no it isn't
>stop deflecting
...
If it wasn't for Jamaica you wouldn't have post-punk, jungle, hip hop, trip hop, dubstep, most of the hardcore continuum and more.
>>60352351
>>60352362
You're factually wrong and living in denial.
You keep firing off those memes though, that'll change the truth.
>>60352359
I think we'd still have post-punk. Television and Joy Division would've still existed
>>60352370
it takes about 3 seconds on wikipedia to determine this is extremely lazy bait
that's a lesson for the future, kids
Black Uhuru is the shit
>>60352392
>bait
lol, keep up with the denial kid
>>60352408
>hurr durr I'm retarded see
>am I funny yet guys
>guys please laugh at me
>>60352392
>>60352253
Riiiight, the words of the man who started hip hop and his life history mean nothing, hip hop is really an avant-garde classical subgenre directly from Mozart and Beethoven.
>>60352417
>lalalalalalalala I refuse to listen to facts
>>60352419
>hip hop was influenced by reggae
>must be reggae
autists actually believe this
>>60352428
This not influence, its a subgenre. Huge difference.
ITT: one autist shits everywhere over the definition over the word "subgenre"
>>60352446
>kool herc was influenced by reggae
>must be reggae
autists actually believe this
hey guys lets talk about reggae wouldn't that be fun?
>>60352459
He created a new genre based completely off of reggae records he had. Isn't that a textbook case of being a subgenre?

Fuck, I find it fascinating how a tiny nation spawned so many notable artists in a collective genre
I haven't listened to much modern reggae. How does it stand up to the roots?
>>60352571
they value music more than other countries it seems and also see it as a viable career path more so than it is than it is elsewhere

best reggae coming through

>>60352603
fuck that sounds awesome
>>60352510
It retains every aspect of the defining musical features of reggae
>>60352483
Is vaporwave 80's pop or acid jazz? Is trance rock music?
Also to the idiots saying "hurr you can't like this music if you don't like reggae" like that is the stupidest reasoning I've ever heard. Can't I enjoy rock music if I don't like jazz? Can't I enjoy pop-punk if I'm not into blues?
only when it's sped up with lots of upstrokes
aka ska

>>60352597
It's really derivative.
Best eras in Jamaican music history was around the changing of decades around 1970 and 1980 respectively. Most going on at least.
>~1970
The Wailers, Jimmy Cliff, U-Roy
>~1980
Black Uhuru, sound systems exploding, Sly & Robbie
dear lord, this thread sure is showing how shit /mu/ has become...
reggae is the truest form of pop music we have
>>60353325
If you think there's something wrong with liking reggae then you're what's wrong with /mu/
>>60353325
Reggae is objectively better than top 40 pop and what hip hops become.
>>60353325
Nah, buana.
>>60353387
but hip hop is reggae
how can it be better?
>>60352142
This thread gets my vote for most idiotic thread of the day. Congratulations Reddit, you did it
>>60353595
>less than a dozen shitposts
nah i'd say its alright
>>60352446
>>60352483
Dis you know that Rock originated from the Blues and folk? It doesn't mean Rock is a subgenre.
>>60352208
this is gonna get tons of hate but dub bass and even percussion is clearly a huge part of hip hop's identity. Id still say hip hop came primarily from breakbeat doe
I enjoy dub a little more because I feel it has greater variety.
>>60352165
Hahaha holy shit
>>60352802
someone please explain this
Reggae has to be the least progressive genre in the history of mankind. But what more can you expect from 420blazeit niggers baka desu senpai
/mu/ can't into reggae because it's mostly white middle class millenials who will never identify with afrocentricity. Reggae and Africa and blackness are inextricably linked, and practically nobody (or very few) here identifies with that.
That's basically the same reason /mu/ sucks at hip hop, but unlike reggae that genre is championed by indie publications as >>60352193 said, so it's 'cool' to be into hip hop, but not really reggae.
>>60353412
(not true by the way)
I'm runnin im runnin im passin im passin
>>60353749
There is a difference between merging multiple genres to form a new one and doing the EXACT same thing you and everyone else did in Jamaica, just in the Bronx instead.
>>60353790
>this is what clueless retards actually think
Try exploring the genre before spouting what /mu/ told you to to look ''patrician''

>Reggae and Africa and blackness are inextricably linked, and practically nobody (or very few) here identifies with that.
Shut your kek mouth. That's not how it works.
>>60353842
>who will never identify with afrocentricity
plenty of white suburban millennials like TPAB which I think requires some understanding
>Bunny Wailer
>0 of 0
You people make me sick.
>>60353895
>EXACT same thing you and everyone else did in Jamaica, just in the Bronx instead.
But Reggae artists weren't RAPPERS . Hip-hop production uses samples from Rock, blues, soul, electronic, reggae, folk, etc while Reggae would normally use instruments and make Jamaican dance music.
In its day 70s hip-hop was seen more as a spin off of disco than it was reggae.
>>60354030
RAPPING is MC'ing, what they did in Jamaica, what is was called at the start.
>Hip-hop production uses samples from Rock, blues, soul, electronic, reggae, folk, etc
Jamaican sound system music did too.
Reggae and dub music are interchangable with Jamaican sound system music, the EXACT same thing he played, with MC's over the top when he moved house.
He said all this in the interview linked in the image earlier ITT.
>>60352142
burial best peter tosh song
>>60353906
I've tried and I actually enjoy some reggae but seriously try to name one less progressive genre?
Also what /mu/ thinks has nothing to do with my opinions since I tend to disagree a lot with the general consensus here is.
That being said, got any recs?
best reggae right here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Si1CSfd_dW8
>>60354259
How many of these have you tried?
As for the progressive part, I'm not getting into that and derailing the thread into some other genre.
>>60354303
>disco is reggae too
>>60354312
>implied no one
who /carribeanparents/ here
>>60354288

>>60354372
Well its only 5 actual reggae so it couldn't include everyone. BS are great though.
>>60354018

Highly recommend it.

>>60353387
>>60353354
my problem wasn't with people liking reggae it was more the fact that the thread was 90% joke posts when I made that post.

>>60355024
>Michael Smith didn't have enough time to make this statement wrong
>that fucking feel
>>60352235
it doesn't, it stopped being relevant in the "indie" world a long time ago, and it doesn't really hold as much sway on /mu/ as people make it out to either.
all of it sounds the same to me
>>60354674
what's he looking at?
>>60355666
at those trips
>>60352142
DUDE
who /dub/ here?
>>60356152
I dub
>>60354012
Right but that falls under the hip-hop category and Kendrick is the indie media's darling - there are no reggae artists that have the benefit of the media riding their dick and giving them that publicity
