Ok. This was great. And completely ignored.
Mumps is the best prog rock composition of all time

HOLY FUCKING KEK
I enjoyed this greatly.
Spot on with the Genesis.
Obviously the greatest band ever.
I don't know if Gentle Giant is as accessible as the author makes them out to be
Thanks anon.
>>60326845
beyond selling england by the pound i have NO love for genesis
im still confused how people like them so much
>>60326904
I grew up with them so that might have something to do with it.
Brainwashed as a child.
Selling England By The Pound is my favorite record of theirs.
I guess I'm a sucker for cheesy English shit, Tony's solos, and Phil's drumming.
I'm guilty.
>>60326950
the cheesiness turns me away, but Selling England by the Pound is good enough to make it into my vinyl collection (bretty fucking good)
I dont like bands with that sound and hated peter gabriels and micheal collins beforehand anyway, so im biased too
>>60326974
Yup. Goat as fuck
>>60326463
tfw I will be at the Hackett concert in DC I assume you're referring to
>>60327163
So does /mu/ see jazz fusion as prog rock, like the article sees it as prog?
Because I can never find anyone on this damn board that likes fusion. Not in jazz threads or prog threads.
(Assuming you're the one who posted the link to that article)
>>60327163
Who the hell is Micheal Collins?
>>60327329
I love Return to Forever, Al Dimeola , Mahavishnu Orchestra, Stanley Clarke, Chick Corea to name a few.
>>60325265
What is it, Anon? Reverse gives me nothing.
>>60327329
I like Fusion and that genre is like prog's big brother
>>60327368
reverse google searching the picture in combination with the word "album" gave me this, I'm guessing that's what that anon was talking about

I fucking saw Al Di Meola Oct 23rd
One of the best shows of my life.
He played Dinner Music Of The Gods AND Song To The Pharaoh Kings.
All you listed are god-tier for sure.
Jean-Luc Ponty, Hiromi Uehara, Weather Report, and Tony Williams Lifetime, and Brand X, and anything with Anthony Jackson are also a few others worth mentioning.
>>60327329
Love me some tasty fusion.
I will just place these names here: Bennie Maupin, Billy Cobham, Hiroshi Suzuki.
You're welcome.

>>60327468
>I fucking saw Al Di Meola Oct 23rd
Wow. All of my jelly. Was it acoustic or electric or both?
Did'nt Phil Collins drum for Brand X?
>>60327563
It was both.
Mostly electric. Mostly stuff from Elegant Gypsy.
Intimate-ass venue. Fucking great.
And yes Phil was the drummer for most of Brand X material. One of the reasons I see him as one of the greatest drummers of the 70s if not ever.
https://youtu.be/tOLmTsZ0YSw
A pretty simple jam. But man, it jams.
>>60327639
Phil Collins is absolutely one of the best drummers in the history of rock, a fact that gets sadly overshadowed by his more noticeable career as a vocalist. I don't know of any other drummer that's as good as he is at playing quietly, and then going completely balls out when it's called for. His drumming is flawless.
>>60327467
Thanks, Boku. Should have thought of that.
>>60327737
Very true.
Its weird seeing the interviews when he states he wanted to continue Genesis as an instrumental jazz fusion group when Gabriel left. WHAT FUCKING IF.
He was 21 when he recorded Foxtrot.
Makes me feel so inadequate.
>>60327639
>https://youtu.be/tOLmTsZ0YSw
Wow. Awesome.
>>60327329
>>60327362
Mahavishnu is my jam
>>60327840
He's great on Foxtrot, but hell, even on The Musical Box in Nursery Cryme he goes wild and he was only 20. Absolutely insane how good he was even at such a young age.
My favorite example of his drumming is on Dancing with the Moonlit Knight. It really showcases his versatility and how he can do everything you could possibly want in a drummer.
>>60326267
I haven't heard this particular album but I love Per Un Amico. You don't happen to have a download of this?
>>60327901
Genesis was a band in the early days that practiced obsessively, 14 hours a day.
>>60327362
>>60327470
>>60327536
Gonna need to check these out
>>60327329
I'm a huge Tigran fan, and I see him as a sort of jazz fusion artist, so I figure that's an avenue I'd love to go down, I just haven't had the exposure yet.
>>60327737
BIlly Chobham was bretty gud
This is such a great album, Peter Hammill has one of the most expressive and unique voices I've ever heard.
>>60327864
Fuck yes
>>60327874
John McLaughlin did Shakti after Mahavishnu.
Some seriously great shit.
https://youtu.be/UfjxtcNYKz4
The 1st song is tits.
>>60327901
Dancing with the Moonlit Knight is amazing. Los Endos, Duke's Travels, and Nuclear Burn (with Brand X) are also some of my favorite examples of his drumming.
Not to mention the flawless Cinema Show with Bill Bruford on Seconds Out.
>>60327921

>Seconds Out.
Someone else appreciates my favorite live album of all time on /mu/.
I can die happy now.
Favourite drummer in prog rock?
For me it's probably Andy Ward from Camel, really interesting and creative drumming.
He's got and amazing ability to capture the various moods in the music and make seamless transitions between them.
>>60328126
Terry Bozzio. Love his chops with UK.
https://youtu.be/ZX39JUjoJ-s
Alright /prog/ what should I listen to next?
>>60328225
Procul Harum - A Salty Dog
>>60328126
Andy Ward is tops. Phil Collins, Carl Palmer, Clive Brooks(Egg), Pip Pyle(Hatfeild and the North, National Health), Pierre Moerlen(Gong), Lenny White(Return to Forever), Franz Di Cioccio(PFM), Bill Bruford, Robert Wyatt are all god-tier.
I'm gonna go with Phil though,
>>60328225
see
>>60326267
What's your opinion on Egg?
>>60328225
Camebert Electrique, I think it's even better than Flying Teapot.
>>60328108
One of the only live albums worth anything
>>60328225
got the original image?
i love this album so much. i honestly think this might be the peak of music as a whole.
>>60328285
I really liked Egg. especially their s/t. It felt like ELP before ELP with some Canterbury Scene thrown into the mix.
>>60328349
>>60328375
That Fugue in D Minor cover is amazing. As is the rest of the album.
Payed $40 for that damn vinyl.

thanks anon.
>>60328225
Popol Vuh - Hosianna Mantra
>>60328398
It's unfortunate that they are overshadowed by other prog bands. If it weren't for that chart I may have never heard of them.

man I tried so hard to like gentle giant but I can't. So much other great stuff on that list though.
>>60329714
how can you not like boys in the band
Will you take psych-rock?
Close to the Edge is amazing but the rest I've heard seems really poppy. What other Yes albums are that elaborate and well-composed?
>>60329723
i dunno, too cheesy/cliche maybe? it just felt fake to me.
>>60330143
Relayer isn't remotely poppy, parts are almost RIO/avant-prog, try that one
>>60325265
kudos anon, but that album isn't anywhere near as good as The White Stag.
>>60330119
alot of psych skirts the border of prog or is just outright.
>>60327329
yeah
george duke - feel and hermann szobel - szobel are both v good albums, the former is very gentle giant (actually other way around lol)
>>60327468

so good

>Mike Oldfield
>No Five Miles Out

>>60328225
semiramis and bacamarte!
>>60330840
szobel is reeally great. But man, I can't into george duke outside of zappa. I agree though, jazz fusion is def a sub of prog, or rather part of the cluster of non-rock made with rock instruments. Thats kind of the irony for me, I fiind most rock kind of boring, but enjoy the texture, so here I am, super into electric guitars and percussion, but hating the fuck out of the music that made them a thing.
>>60328126
Bruford, but Furio Chirico doesn't get nearly enough credit.

Emerson, Lake & Palmer - [1971] Tarkus

ELP are so good.
>>60326845
Gentle Giant has a really odd dissonant sound. If any other band tried to play their music it would probably just sound like discordant noise but GG really makes it work. It's like the greatest accidental pop sound ever.
Start with the self-titled, Acquiring the Taste, and Octopus
>>60332643
I've ordered a CD of Tarkus (along with Neil Young's "Tonight's The Night"), it arrives today.
>>60332643

It's easily one of the most consistent genres there are. What have you listened to that you say that?
>>60328126
Chris Cutler from Henry Cow, Slapp Happy, and Art Bears. Some of the best rhythms ever, and a very diverse drumming style at the same time.
Fitting. I'm listening to Steven Wilson at the moment. Beautiful as fuck.
Seen him live several times, and everytime at the end of the concert, he plays some PY. Good times.
