Ok I got some a question to you fags

>What makes something avant garde? Wikipedia defintions is following
>are people or works that are experimental or innovative, particularly with respect to art, culture, and politics.
So what makes some form of metal experimental or innovative?
Which things count as experimental/innovative - could I record my farts, downtune and distort them and record my broken blender and distort and out on some effects to that sound and put them on some metal song I created and call it avant garde?
How much "avant garde" do you need it to be considered as actual avant garde?

>-core
What does it mean? There´s cavern-, war-, metal-, jazz- funk-, horror etc. cores.
I understand harcore (punk) since that´s the name of that genre and all these death- and metalcore to certain extent.
But what the hell does it mean when genre is jazzcore or caverncore?
Is it somehow related to hardcore (punk) or what?
Or is it just a suffix that gets put on everything here to make even more differences between genres, pic related.
>>
>>60314113
Wow. Right up my alley.
http://tyrantsofhell.bandcamp.com/
>>
>>60314924
avant-garde is now basically just dissonant metal or circus music, same as the meaning of progressive got dumbed down to just a label of any slightly more compicated music
>>
>>60314924
Don't know anything about the -core stuff, except that the bands I love that have -core influence are a little less riff-driven and have hardcore stuff like breakdowns in them. Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-37wtJeNzM

With regards to the avant-garde bit, I know that my favorite avant-garde-metal bands have either a fusion with a genre that pretty much only they are fused with (Diablo Swing Orchestra - swing or big-band jazz mixed with metal; example: https://youtu.be/wkASQY-G_ZI); or they just have a sound that is chaotic and all-over-the-place and impossible to define except that you know it has metal roots (uneXpect - example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gRApOOetSco)
>>
>>60314967
Dissonant can be avant-garde, circus music mashed with metal is just circus music mashed with metal.
>>
>>60314977
> (Diablo Swing Orchestra - swing or big-band jazz mixed with metal; example: https://youtu.be/wkASQY-G_ZI); [Embed]
Ok, gotta admit that´s pretty catchy.
>>

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44vzMNG2fZc
>>
>>60314924
>could I record my farts, downtune and distort them
Yes. Even better if you can make an entire album based around the concept of digestion. Or general bodily functions. That's what's wonderful about experimental music, anything goes. Whether you manage to make a good album about digestion or not is irrelevant, fact is it's a cool concept.

The best and most well-known avant-garde artists are more concept and less content (see John Cage).

>core
Used to mean related to hardcore punk. Now I'm not so sure. It's a certain feel, it's a different kind of dissonance than there is in black metal and there's a specific ambiance that goes with it though.
>>
>>60315140

Threadly reminder than Diablo swing orchestra was tagged as fedora only because insecure people thought that jazz influences mean pretentiousness

The older the metal the more elegant it sounds tb h, don't have any problem with that though, just an observation, applies to every sub-genre
>>
Jane Marie > Bailey Jay > Sarina Valentina
>>
>>60314924

-core is supposed to be related to hardcore punk

The suffixe is used as a meme / a way to say "music related to something"
Caverncore is a meme denomination of noisy, "cavernous" blackened death metal
Jazzcore is jazz punk
Metalcore is hardcore punk + metal though modern metalcore is mostly Slaughter of the soul with breakdowns and djent chuggs
Never heard of warcore and funkcore even if "war core" is probably just music that evokes war

You're perfectly right for avant-garde, though the use of avant- in metal is very loose

Well, you name it really. I suppose other bands have had cleaner production and written stuff that's more difficult to play but they've all been chasing something Suffo just had naturally. And I say that as someone who loves techdeath overall.

But that's literally objectively wrong: Luc Lemay and his mates back in the late 90's said in interviews that they were about "making new musical languages"

For me anyway, Gorguts' Obscura is probably one of the most "trippy" albums I own. There is so much more to its appeal than technicality: I literally don't even pay attention to the proficiency of the instrumental work.
>>

But the counter-point composition and melody work is super based. Why don't you like colors?

I don't really think in narratives like "ground-breaking or "Scene advancing"" because what's you start conversations on what is innovative or not, it seems to be huge bait for meaningless subjective bickering.

This said, Kayo Dot is fucking amazing. What is the appeal of Choir of Eyes for you?
>>
>>60316875
its really ok.
>>
>>60316877
Fuckin wonderfull. Their whole set was incredible, however I would appreciate a few more older songs, because their first two albums are my favs. They played Exhume to Consume and Reek of Putrefaction and thats it; most of the set was from Surgical Steel. But Captive Bolt Pistol had a sudden Genital Grinder interlude which gave me a chuckle. Still, I enjoyed Napalm Death's set even more.
>>
>>60316958

>only two songs off Reek and Symphonies

I knew this would be the case but I'm still disappointed
>>
>>60316929
10/10 for me.

The basswork, counter-point, layered melodic work... EVERYTHING about Colored Sands composition is god-tier.

Also, the concept/story about the Tibetans is a real nice touch.
>>
>>60316925
The tracks of Choir of Eyes has a really good flow. Like Gorguts, the main appeal is the atmosphere it manages to create. Though kayo dot often combine the oppressive dissonance with really beautiful moments such as on The Manifold Curiosity. I really enjoy Toby's solo album is well which is extremely dark. Coppers tongue is underrated too. On Lipid Form might be their best.
>>

>>60316875
huge let down to be honest
>>
>>60317030
The first thing that popped out for me in Choir of Eyes is are the colors of the guitarwork and bass... But as I've listened to it, it's much more amorphous and non-riff oriented, so I'm sorta mixed on it in the sense that I don't really have a good grasp on the atmosphere at this moment. I just need to listen to it more.

Gimme the slowest doom metal you've ever heard but it has to be easily listenable (I'm looking at you Sunn O))) )
This one is already pretty slow but I want it slower!
>>
>>60316877
Yeah. First time they toured the US. '90 or '91.
>>
Does anyone else randomly beat on their chest imitating blast beats and double bass drums?
>>

how the hell can you beat yourself that fast?
>>
>>60320528

not my chest but my desk is in bits

I do, specially when the drummer is doing some really staccato beats like darkthrone's and on d-beats as well.
>>
>>60320398

What doesn't hold up? This is awesome, I don't know why I haven't listened to it in so long

Only way I can put it is the slam sections are boring and the tech sections are boring and they can't write a memorable riff to save their lives, their 2nd album is a bit better but where they really shine imo are all their albums going from 3rd

That's nothing compared to this shit

>Keene has stated in interviews that the name "Autotheism" derives from "auto" meaning self and "theism" meaning belief in God or gods, hence autotheism means "believing in one's self", or "being your own God". The album questions antiquated belief systems that are in play in current society. As well as touching upon religion, the album touches upon growth in technology at an exponential rate, the Holographic Universe theory, and science as a new religion, or alternatively, knowledge and reason as a reigning religion. Keene said in interviews that the inspiration for the album came partly from reading a book by Ray Kurzweil called The Singularity Is Near. The album also has an underlying theme of "Age of Reason" or "Renaissance"-esque discovery and ethics traits; alternatively, "starting over" or massively rethinking the way current systems are run. The album artwork, as well as the music and lyrics, intuitively portray this atmosphere.

The weird thing is, I never do it along with music. I'll headbang a bit, but it's always when I'm not listening to music that I'll just start slapping on my chest.

>>60320569
I definitely don't get near some of the faster drumming I've heard, but just using the my wrist and the palm of my hand can produce a pretty fast noise. Here's a kind of shitty example

i'm interested in futurism but kurzweil has no idea what he's talking about, he's extrapolating exponential growth ideas outside of computer chip density (the only area where it applies)
him and michio kaku are very intelligent people but shouldn't act like they can predict the future outside of their narrow specialty
