Whats up /mu/, so I've always played guitar the way I felt was comfortable, but I do something that I've never seen any other players do... Wondering if any anons have the same habit?

I dont play very "cleanly," that is to say, I don't really do a lot of precise picking, I basically mute every string except the one i want to play and use full strums (this is most of the time, I do use precise picking as well). Also, instead of muting with my palm, I mute with the fingers im not using on my left hand. Any players similar to this?

Also, general Guitar Playing Style Thread

Sounds like you're just really shit
>>
>>60281563
lol. style has nothing to do with skill, my friend. its the way i LIKE to play
>>
>>60281521
I like huuge slides, I think I got that from listening to a lot of steve vai as a teen
>>
>>60281813
interesting. i could never get into slides.... do you press every string or just the string your playing?
>>
>>60281900
just the one I'm playing, I'll try to use your technique tomorrow though

thoughts on the whammy bar m8? I used to use it all the time but I haven't touched it in like 4 years, most of the time it's just a gimmick I reckon
>>
>>60281931
just fyi i use my technique when im playing with my band mainly, its sloppy sounding (but not in a bad way imo), and just how im comfortable playing.

as for the whammy, i dont have much experience for it. I had a squier strat when i first started playing, and every time i used it it threw my tuning out of whack. so i threw it away and have never bought a guitar with one since. Looking back, i wish i wouldve kept it and tried to use it as i matured as a player
>>
that must sound terrible. not only do you not get the full picking stroke through the string, you have to hear all of the muted strings every time
>>
>>60282028
its not as bad as you think. I dont play with distortion often, but when i do i dont use this technique for that reason. And i dont play ALL of the muted strings. Id describe it as reggae-ish while still being rock
>>
>>60282098
i'm sure it can sound good in some contexts but you should really work on technique.
>>
>>60282164
agreed. like i said, i dont just throw technique out the window. i play "correctly" often, but when i write music, its usually in the other style.
>>
>>60281521
Carpal Tunnel fucked my hands up pretty bad so I created some weird tunings to compensate. My stuff is simple, it's basically just a background to the vocals/lyrics which are actually pretty decent. When my album drops I'll post a link on here and be told how shit I am. It'll be awesome.
>>
>>60282273
respect. way to find a solution to the problem rather than pussying out
>>
Every so often I'll play in an improv noise group, and I've started doing this thing where I'll two-hand tap a pattern on the fretboard somewhat randomly, but I keep repeating it with the right consistency and speed so that it sounds like a weird glitched-out loop or something.

After I started doing this for a while I auditioned for that improv noise band (which has been going since 2009) and fooled the original band member into thinking I was using a bunch of pedals to get the loop sound (I haven't used pedals in a year or so). pretty good feeling desu
>>
Yeah op i do the same. Ignore these fags, is the best way of playing if you are not into metal and shit like that, just try to not overuse the full strumming.
Also, do you use your thumb on 6 string? I know is a bad habit iirc, but fuck, is the only way of playing little wing decently ffs
>>
When I'm just jamming, I'll usually just play a lot of little idiosyncratic fills (hitting harmonics, slides, noise bursts, etc.) in between riffs and melodies, and I like utilizing a lot of effects to create odd sounds and melodies.
Sometimes, on my own, I'll do a Battles-type thing where I'll set up a looper, play a riff/idea, and then adjust parameters and set more loops over that riff until I have a wall of sound

>gimmick
Watch this and be amazed at how well the whammy bar can be used musically
http://youtu.be/Y9BQhmIShrg
I was in a surf rock band for a bit in hs and so I tend to use tremolo picking, the whammy bar and play really melodically

One time i was jacking off looking for porn videos. you know like how u kind of jack off before a video to keep yourself in the mood but not nut. well anyway i was feeling adventurous and found some weird section of girls being vacuum packed into plastic. some girl was on a bed and im flicking, anticipating why people get off to this. there's no air and she's just still for a bit. ok this is boring. then she starts trying to breathe, she can't so she freaks the fuck out and im guessing she's begging to get let out this death bag. i keep flicking bc he should let her out. no. stop flicking bc some Japanese girl is dying rn.
turns blue and shit and is just gasping on reflex. nope. stops moving. nope nope. eventually the guy opens the bag and she's fucking purple. he films her waking up to prove he's not a serial killer. she probably has permanent brain damage and i was dryer than the Sahara desert.

I heard Fruciante plays like this too. Your in good company OP
>>
>>60281563
this is how john frusciante plays a lot
>>
>>60281521
That is a funk technique OP, common when you're playing single note phrases with rhythmic dead notes in between, not very versatile of you to be playing that way all the time though.

>>
>>60281521
stevie ray vaughn, alot of bluesy texas rock guys do this
>>
>>60284980
On Can't Stop and a few other songs. it's not something he does that often
>>
>>60285495
Strumming all 6 strings and muting 5 to play a melody is not something that is done often and it's a pretty niche method that isn't practical outside of playing a simple repeating melody as a rhythm.
>>
>>60285610
I can think of quite a lot of things I would play like that though, Can't Stop by the Chillis, Sleep Now In The Fire by RATM, maybe the riff to Play That Funky Music lol. Stuff like that.

Play whats inside anon
>>
>>60285610
so? who cares, if thats how op wants to play guitar practicality doesnt really matter.
>>
>>60285868
At a certain point you're a faggot hipster passing off sloppy technique as your style.
>>
>>60285962
sounds more like you just want to group everything different from your style together and shit on it because its not how you do things
go cry about it
>>
>>60285825
I get that it works in funk, but since you passed it off as part of your style it makes me think that you use it often. Do you do this a lot when playing a solo or not funk? Do you understand why this is an easy way to avoid precise picking and technique?
>>
>>60286032
It's not "my style" it's bad technique for playing melodies outside of rare circumstances. It's not a style that you could use a lot without being sloppy. How long have you been playing guitar?
>>
>>60286044
I'm not OP
>>
>>60286064
im not op and i dont play like him ive been playing guitar for about 10 years now, my techniques normal, although im also a very good percussive acoustic player.
i just dont think it matters how he wants to play his instrument. even without "proper" technique he still has the same potential as everyone else to practice and get amazing at the way he plays. not everyone has to play guitar the same way because of practicality
>>
>>60286120
I know, how long have you been playing guitar?
>>
>>60286149
He's not the first novice guitarist to think playing one note by strumming all and muting 5 sounds better than it really does. It really is something that people overuse and I definitely used to do it as well.
>>
>>60286151
If you know why are you saying I passed it off as part of my style? I've been playing 11 years.
>>
>>60286174
well when it comes to that what appeals musically to everyone is objective, he also wouldnt be the first person to develop more onto that style as he goes and shape it into something great musically.
im saying theres no need to stifle the man and tell him hes playing guitar wrong just because he enjoys doing it differently
>>
I personally like power chords and pentatonic scales. ;-)
>>
>>60286299
This is the definition of pleb tier guitar playing
>>
>>60286318
Let's say I took those power chords and added 2 more notes. Then I get those fancy "indie" sounding major 7 chords. Then I take a pentatonic scale and add 2 more notes. Then I get the major scale. You might know it as the "indie scale". Is this style of guitar playing much more hip for you you ignorant fuck?
>>
>>60286368
>Is this style of guitar playing much more hip for you you ignorant fuck?
yes thank you, dont let it happen again
>>
>>60286368
LOL, fucking no. Jazz player here dumbass.
>>
I always let open strings ring out and it's a really fuckin bad habit because it makes it harder to cleanly play riffs
