I need more blackened glam metal. The CNK is alright but it's also very martial and I'm not getting distinct BM vibes from them anymore.

What has in your opinion been the WORST black metal year so far?

I'm gonna have to go with either 2002 or 2003. There was fuck all released during those years worth mentioning. 2002-2003 was definitely the absolute low point of the genre.

There are fundamental biological differences between races. It's like breeds of dogs. They're all dogs but they have different physocal attributes and varying intelligences. Eg. A border collie is objectivly more intelligent than other breeds.

Humans are like dogs. We are the same, but different. We can breed together, but that doesnt mean we are all exactly the same. There are racial differences.

Race exists outside of social construct. Therefore it is possible for one group of humans to be superior to another

/mu/ has been fotm spam since 2009 at least. It's nothing new. But like you, I can't bear to look at the catalog and see a dozen threads containing "Please validate my opinion on this unremarkable top 40 album. Tell me what to think!!" Most posters here are probably young and impressionable, and just want to fit in. You see this a bit in /metal/ as well, with the same overhyped releases being spammed in every thread.
>>
>>60276333
>you see this a bit in /metal/ too
/metal/ is now nothing but that, it's full /b/ in there, /nbbmn/ doesn't seem to suffer from it at all though, you guys are extremely chill

>>
>>60276397
i can sometimes get like that too. just take more time for introspection. don't always browse mu when listening to music. try taking a walk with headphones, or just laying in bed with the lights off. if you're really truly passionate about music and you're not just using it as a fashion accessory, then you should be able to form your own opinions and think about it critically.

Spot on. Waifu shit in general has no place on blue boards imo. That includes the nauseating "Our Boiz" trend which plagues /metal/. It's remarkable how much better this general is.

>>60276397
Perhaps you're not listening to music very critically, but rather enjoying it as background noise. When you sit and actively listen, with no distractions, you may realize that albums you previously thought were great are actually mediocre. Ask yourself not only "Is this good?" but also "WHY is this good?" Don't fall for hype, especially when people are declaring "masterpieces" left and right after only one listen.

>>60276421
The majority of /metal/ seems to have absurdly low standards, especially for new releases. Anything with the right aesthetic (cavern core, Orthodox, atmostuff) is worshiped en masse, regardless of compositional quality.

Well hello to you too super satan

I think a great byproduct of the limitations for every November is that posters have to determine for themselves what they enjoy because they're going to be limited to the genre for the whole month making them pay more attention to the mixing/composition/lyrical themes/etc. of the releases they choose to listen to instead of being spoonfed "this came out this week, listen to it" not that I'm not guilty of both doing this and falling victim to it being a regular of /metal/

so much this, don't get caught in ANY hype, always listen to musically critically with no outside influences, not forgetting subjectivity of course, like how it makes YOU feel, etc

All waifupop is garbage, and the people who listen to it are some of the most obnoxious posters in years btw
>>
>>60276666
>compositional quality
that's one of the last things I care for in black metal tbqh
>>
>>60276723
And the harsh thing is that it can only happen once a year because the idea of it is so ridiculous, that if it were to last any longer, it'd either die from lack of activity or invasion is shitposting. Quality comes from self-discipline.
>>
So how's NBBMN treating everyone? Find any recent gems?
>>
>>60276723
I think it's important to hear releases of varying quality, and determine for yourself whether they are worthwhile. That's why when I see someone posting their upcoming list and it includes shit like Nargaroth or CoF, I don't try to police them. Once you listen to enough metal, you eventually realize such artists are quite shallow and don't offer as rewarding a listening experience as some of their contemporaries. There's only so much time in a day to listen to music, so why bother wasting it?

>don't get caught in ANY hype, always listen to musically critically with no outside influences, not forgetting subjectivity of course, like how it makes YOU feel
This is definitely what you should, but it doesn't really work on /metal/ if you disagree with the majority. The are some albums that are just sacred, for example Obscura, and you can't criticize those albums in any way or prefer any other album over them without derailing the thread and/or causing a shitstorm. There have been a couple times when I've dared to say that I prefer Colored Sands over Obscura and I've had like 8 people calling my post bait every single time without getting any serious replies.
>>
>>60276876
that won't work in any online community due to the very nature of online communities

besides, you don't have to agree with those people, i still think Still Bummed is a fantastic album despite it being considered a viralcore album now

I think Mesarthim is kind of a big thing this year for a lot of people.

My personal favorite has been Absconditus. I just haven't heard a genuinely aggressive BM album like this in a long time. And it's only aggressive, there's none of that extra melodic wholesome emotion that you get from most recent Black Metal (No disrespect to that atmosphere, I love it). But Absconditus is truly chaotic and angry as fuck.

It's good to be critical of all "sacred cows," but I agree that it's challenging on /metal/ to actually criticize them without being perceived as a trole. Then again, such analyses typically consist of things like "[Revered album] is shit/boring/homosexual."

There are plenty of beloved albums I don't care for at all, but I'm not going to just shitpost my opinion unless I can back it up. Most of the time, I'm not going to listen to an album which I don't like enough times to have a valid argument against it.

Current favourites. The bottom row is black/death/war and doesn't really fit nbbmn but whatever - Caveman Cult is too good to be ignored.

Also, I hope everyone is listening to a lot of Negative Plane this year, they're one of the best bands around and they were great live.

So is black metal determined by the instrumentation of the lyrical matter? Or is it just kind of a certain feel which determines if it's black metal or not?
>>

I wish that first Immortal album didn't have that Death Metal production. Great album, but the sound just doesn't fit right.

Blackened "Ride The Lightning".

it's a certain kind of muscular feel.

HHH is an idiot but at least he got that right; if it makes you feel like clenching your teeth and making the claw hand, it's probably black metal.

I absolutely love the production! Especially how it sounds like it was done so poorly, like in Unholy Forces of Evil around 3:20 when the vocals are twice as loud from nowhere?

Also, I think it's Abbath's best vocal performance, he sounds possessed.

Let's be tee bee ache with each other.

No matter how much you think Watain are posers, no matter what arguments you can bring up to justify your prejudices against them, you gotta admit that Stellarvore is one of the most powerful and awe-inspiring songs in the entire genre.

It's pretty much the perfect album finisher (when combined with its intro).

not sure i would go this far, though i do agree it is a fantastic closer. honestly watain's first 3 albums are really good, i couldn't care less about poser accusations. in particular casus luciferi was one of my favourite black metal albums for a while

I don't know, apparently it's because they're famous and because they have a clean production.

Varg is a big closet nerd

>that's just an aesthetic like any other
Yes and no. Composition is more than the aural qualities (production, tempo, timbre) or even the band's harmonic/melodic traits (dissonance vs. consonance etc). Musical structure arguably transcends the more superficial distinctions that tend to characterize subgenres, i.e. tags like "atmospheric" and "technical." I do admit that it is more convenient to classify metal based on a general idea of its "sound," however I do not choose to employ tags that are more specific than the big names (black, death, doom, power, etc).

At what point (if ever) does a regional scene become a genre? Scenes like the Polish, Portugeese, and Finnish scenes all have thier unique sound and you can tell them apart just by hearing them, but they're not sub-genres. Does a sound become a (sub)genre when it breeches a region and starts to apear all over the place? How does it work?
