great album
>>
>>60190424
this rides a very thin line between jazz and math rock, it's kind of weird how it fluctuates between the two. I've always thought of math rock as being very close to jazz anyways, but this album confirms that for me. Good stuff.

>Dafnis Prieto Sextet- Triangles and Circles (8.7)

i downloaded this a while back when you posted this list months ago, and i gotta disagree with this rating. I found myself bored by the one-note quality this album had. I'm a drummer and the guy is amazing, but it still couldn't save the album for me. After the first couple of tracks, it just kind of dragged on.

I would probably rate this at a 7.5 at highest, and probably closer to a 7.3. Honestly curious, what made you rate it so highly?

The compositions really won me over on this one. I think in general they were well-thought out with interludes between solos and more interesting large form pieces that gives different material for the soloists to work with. Not all of the tracks were like that but then there was also a lot of very good counterpoint in the pieces which is something that I think not enough jazz players are really exploring. The Evil in You is a good example of what I'm talking about. I love how it starts out very tight and controlled based on just a rhythm but layers keep adding in until it morphs into this sort of chaotic group improv but with the group still referencing that primary rhythm. Throughout the album the soloists all could have been better I think but they worked well as a unit and there was a lot of really good interplay going on between them. You'll probably notice that there's a LOT of "Latin jazz" near the top of my list. That's probably a personal preference thing... Right now I'm very into that and I think there's a lot of cool Latin jazz happening now. I think on this record these guys did Latin jazz their own way and I haven't really heard anybody else doing it quite that way.

As I'm thinking back on it maybe it isn't quite an 8.7. I'm pretty sure I only listened to it once so maybe I'll listen to it again but I really liked it on first listen. I don't think I'd change it to much lower than an 8.4
>>
>>60190559
I enjoyed this album a lot but it's so far removed from being jazz that I didn't want to include it on my list

Listening to The Evil in You, and I really like it, and I also don't remember it from the album.

It's been a couple of months since I listened to it, so remember much about it other than thinking it was kind of samey. This song isn't like what I remember, though, so I might have to revisit the album myself.

Although, now that the sax has really come in, he's sounding very SNL band to me, so that's not my favorite.
>>
Has anybody heard Evan Parker's new album? Thoughts?
>>
>>60192715
Samey isn't necessarily a bad thing to me. Being samey is only bad if the music isn't interesting or good. I guess I can maybe see how you'd get the SNL sound from the way the sax player hits the altissimo notes but that doesn't bother me really. As I said, individually the soloists aren't necessarily my favorite but it's how they play together that is great. That and I think the compositions are all good in their own way and come at the Latin thing in a slightly different way.
>>
>>60192901
i feel like being samey in a genre built around improvisation and especially since free jazz has been around is kind of a bad thing, but like I said, I'll have to revisit it to see if it's actually as samey as I remember it being.

Also, I agree with Bird Calls being near/at the top. I think Break Stuff should be higher, though. I listened to both of those just the other day and they're still two of my tops for the year.
>>
>>60192960
I'd say Break Stuff had a few very very good tracks but then the rest were fairly unremarkable. And the tracks that I found exceptional sounded kind of influenced by Craig Taborn's last ECM record. I gave Break Stuff a few listens so I think I'm fairly sure about how I feel about that one.
>>
>>60192960
Out of curiosity do you listen to much Latin jazz? Have any favorites in the genre?
>>
>>60193238
I honestly haven't listened to very much. The closest I usually get to the genre is bossanova or occasionally some Buena Vista Social Club.
>>
>>60192744
Not that good

I only recently started trying to get into more modern/contemporary jazz, so I don't have that same reference point to draw from when I listen to it. Probably why I enjoy it more. Shrug.

Do you listen to Mary Halvorson at all? I think I brought her up in a thread you were in a while back. She put out a new solo album that I really enjoy, but I'm kind of a sucker for her guitar playing in general.

Yeah I missed her when she came to town a while back and I haven't gotten a chance to hear her new record yet. In the last couple months I've gotten pretty behind with listening to this year's stuff because I've been listening to a lot of older Afro Cuban music
>>
>>60193574
I'd love to see her play live some time.

Are you the same jazz guy that plays double bass or was that a different jazz guy that trips?
>>
>>60193617
Probably someone else. I play piano.
>>
I have yet to hear a single jazz album recorded after 1980 that isn't a complete waste of time to listen to.
>>
>>60193892
And I bet you've just listened to so many
>>
>>60193574
Can you recommend some good Afrocuban music? I pretty much only know some bossa nova
>>
>>60193486
I couldn't get into this album at all. What did you like about it?
>>
>>60191581
surprised nobody posted it earlier t b h
>>
>>60194078
Depends... There is a lot of different stuff that falls under the Afro Cuban label. I've been listening to a lot of 60's and 70's salsa music but there's also Afro Cuban bebop fusion type stuff or mambo music and traditional Cuban folk music or also more contemporary Latin jazz with Afro Cuban flavor. What are you most interested in?

If I want to only choose one of these, which one would you reccommend the most?

Like, what'st the kind of blue of salsa?
>>
>>60194725
What's your favorite jazz album and I'll tell you one salsa album you should listen to. There's no obvious choice for a "Kind of Blue" of salsa
>>
>>60194770
Don't really have a definite favorite but maybe Ahmad's Blues by ahmad jamal or Tomcat by Lee Morgan or honestly just Fearless Friday by Omer Klein.

Meh, I honestly don't have a favorite Jazz album I just like good Jazz.

You'd probably like the Cuban Jam Session in Miniature record.
