I just recently heard about a group that has a Jazz influence but a heavier sound (progressive instrumental) that is gold. Animals As Leaders, I'm listening to their self titled album and as I said, they are totally gold.

If you're a jazz fan or looking to dig deeper into the genre you should really participate in the weekly blindfold test threads. They are a lot of fun but would be better with more people participating.

Speaking as a big fan of prog metal, metal does not know how to incorporate jazz influence. It always comes off as very safe, bland elevator wankery. Ephel Duath are one of the only bands that get it right.
For fusion, I'd suggest Feel, by George Duke, Quiet Sun's s/t, Alamaailman Vasarat - Käärmelautakunta, some stuff by Modry Efekt/Blue Effect and also Brand X. Also, seconding the Szobel rec.
As for non-fusion jazz, I'm the furthest thing from an expert, but I love Rabih Abou-Khalil's arabic folk/jazz mixture.
