Hello /prod/

I'd like to get better at writing music so I'm writing pieces whenever I get the time and I'm in the mood

If you can spare 4 minutes of your time to listen and tell me which parts you like and which parts you don't I'd be ever so grateful

Ty anon
>>
what do you call that kind of continuous spray of a noise wave that resembles/acts like a crash cymbal? don't have an example on hand, unfortunately, but it's pretty common in techno music. usually used at the climax of a track
>>
finally grabbing a turntable today /prod/

i've never done it before, but sampling vinyl looks a lot easier than sampling cassettes (in terms of being able to drop the needle wherever on the record instead of hitting fast forward/rewind and twiddling your thumbs for however long it takes to get to a different song on a cassette deck)
>>60185379
overdone? nah but seriously, i think it's a noise sweep or something like that
>>
can anybody tell me what kind of synth preset they use in 80s songs like the Duane song? I mean, that one that sort of sounds like a bell with a lot of reverb
>>
>>60184575
that's pretty dank

If you really want me to nitpick, there are some arpeggios that sound a little bit out of place, and I feel that the starting melody didn't evolve as well as it could. The transition at 1:05 can be described as a bit unexpected too.
>>
>>60184575
i feel like a dumbass with my bleep shit after listening to your link. enjoyed all of the parts really

Just tracked a single with my band in a very, very professional studio. Millions of dollars worth of gear etc.

I'm curious to know whether it's possible to properly mix this DIY style. I have studio monitors, a sub, ableton suite, and so on-- just not sure how big of a difference it would make to pay to have a pro do it. (I've been producing music for years, just haven't been formally trained in audio engineering).

It would be awesome to save the money. Plus, I think that there are definitely some artistic decisions to be made with the mix. I just don't want to screw something technical up with the bass frequencies or the phase or blabla.

Either way, I plan to have the stuff professionally mastered in the end.

How much of the magic is in mixing vs. mastering?
>>
Can someone tell me if this parrallel compression sounds alright? The first 4 bars are the drums and compressed track, the second 4 are just the compression, and the final is the drums, compression, and an acid loop for context.

This might not be the right thread for me, but I currently produce a lot of shitty trap music and I have been wanting to start working with more experimental genres. How does /prod/ get inspired?
>>
>>60186912
>How does /prod/ get inspired?

For experimental music, I just spend hours listening, watching or otherwise experiencing aesthetics. I also find that it helps if you avoid settling down for a genre and restricting yourself to its boundaries.

Turn your mind off and write

has anyone got any tips for cleaning up the low end of a hip hop sample?. in alot of my tracks the samples are very muddy in the low end and don't have much clarity to notes and whatnot. do i need to use higher quality samples?

cheers x
>>
>>60186384
the mix is 80%, most of the mistakes there can not be fixed on the master files
of course there are lots of artistic decisions you have to make while mixing, that's why you should choose an engineer with a style you like and you find it easy to communicate your ideas and intentions with
>>
>>60187464
it's always a good idea to go for the best sampling quality available to you (unless you're purposefully sampling something lo fi) other than that just try to eq them i guess

Still trying to make dub/dub techno on my laptop. I keep going back and forth on the stereo placement of the chords, unsure of where they should sit. That, and I'm not sure how to expand this loop into a track (or if I even should). Thoughts?
>>
So I've been editing some video lately and I find myself continuously sending the completed audio track out to my DAW and running it through an outboard compressor... This stuff has nothing to do with music, just find doing some compression this way really normalizes the audio from the camera...

Am I the only person who goes to this much effort over something so dumb?

>>
>>60189082
>>60189120
Thanks, I wasn't really sure since no one ever talks about it. That and I guess most people editing quick videos don't have outboard rack equipment haha.

Something about really mismatched or quiet audio on YouTube does my head in.

I've got the compress set to -26db, 3:1, 1ms attack, 10ms release. Most of the audio is engine noise, but it seems to do the trick.

Anything else worth doing to the audio?
>>
>>60189135
no, it's actually pretty good for beatmaking and sampling, but it isnt as good for more complex stuff, the good thing is that you can use it as a vst with whatever daw you use
>>
How do I get my sounds to sound "wider" in the mix?

>panning
>delays

besides those, what other techniques should I read upon?

thanks
>>
>>60189393
not much else to it really besides stereo widening plugins and midside eqing (i really like boosting the highs in the side channel despite all whining about additive eqing, fight me)
>>
>>60189393
Reverb, and single delay effects.(Phasing/Flanger/Chorus) Reverb is the big one though, and one of the most important effects.
>>
>>60184190
He uploaded one song off it: https://clyp.it/5mmq5gsu

>>60185400
>sampling vinyl looks a lot easier than sampling cassettes
any sane person nowadays would just rip the whole thing (cassette or vinyl) to their computer beforehand so they could find the sample and cut it out with precision all in one step

>>60187464
EQ is the only thing you can do. If you can't EQ it well enough, you could try cutting all the low end completely out and recreating it yourself.

>>60189063
Maybe one of lose little modern digital portastudios. Seems like it would kill two birds with one stone (multi-track recording, as well as portable field recording)

>>60189393
reverb all day every day m8

you could also subtly EQ the left and right channels of a single track differently. there's also the method where you shift one of the stereo channels a little bit ahead/behind the other in the timeline but apparently that can cause phase issues so it's generally avoided.
>>

Do I suck?
>>
>>60189436
>Reverb is the big one though
not that guy, but for wideness? really?
what kind of stuff are you doing with reverb for width?
>>60189481
lol who says i'm a sane person?
i've always liked having a hardware setup and a software setup that i can use alone or together and freely transition between.

i also just dont wanna bother ripping a bunch of whole cassettes and records that i may hardly end up using. i'd rather just throw something in a cassette deck/turntable and see where it goes

>>

>>how to expand this loop into a track

add shakers, hi-hats, ride cymbal, clap/snare, then add in pads and little white noise effects and stuff. i always build my melodies in init saw waves first in order to make sure i have something that makes sense compositionally, then i create a patch around the melody.

I would just vamp off of the chord progression you have created with some M1 pad patches or maybe a slow acid loop, or maybe just play with the filtering and resonance automation of this dub chord across the span of a couple minutes.

that little lead synth makes it sound like that pointy boot dancing shit mexicanos used to listen to, on a side note, I like the moombathon vibe its giving off.

hahah I know what you mean by the mexican music, and I'm glad it gives that vibe because I'm going for a latin feel lmao.

How do I get better at melodic synth structure? I want to make prog house but It is coming off as choppy. More practice? Better synths? I know the basics of music theory already.

This is a long shot, but does anyone use ppooll? I've been trying to get the vst module working with no luck. I have it aimed at all my vst and standalone applications and for every one I get the same "can't find plug-in [file path] error". Anyone know what's going on?
