they're emotionally shallow and try to make up for that with a forced sense of "epicness" that feels fake and obnoxious. it's like they never build to anything properly, corset metal in general just skips straight to what would be the climax for a band with some subtlety. At the same time they (and again I'm generalizing to all corset metal because my complaints are with the whole genre) don't have anything that can be enjoyed on a visceral level like other genres that don't focus on structure. there's no catchy riffs or grooves, no atmosphere that evokes a particular feeling and the lyrics are usually moronic despite being one of the more prominent focuses of the music. Like it all you want these complaints are personal aesthetic preferences but everything about the genre annoys the shit out of me.

if corsetcore bands had orchestral backing that was actually interesting and not completely hollow bombast with no melodic depth, it might be more interesting
but even then, attempts to fuse symphonic music and metal generally go way too far in one direction or the other
as for the lyrics, i've read epica lyrics and they're SO fucking poorly metered like holy shit they make the most clunky lines and choruses. unexpect get around this by having constant time sig changes so the jankiness of the vocal rhythms fits with everything else, but they're actually good and have riffs so i don't put them in the same category as epica.

Metalcore is very weird in the sense that there's a lot of camps of it. There's the metalcore camp that went the BFMV Trivum KSE route inspired by melodeath and there's the camp like Hopesfall, Poison The Well and shit that are more inspired by post-hardcore. And then there's the dissonant mathcore stuff like Norma Jean that was probably inspired by screamo.
And yet people still say "metalcore" by itself like it means anything lmao.

This is why I crusade against people generalizing the genre, even though I seem like an autistic metalcore defender when doing it. I guess people assume the entire genre (barring converge, botch, btbam, le list goes on) is stuff like Pierce the Veil, Asking Alexandria, and Emmure. The reality is it's a really diverse genre that's hard to generalize.
