Why no jazz thread?
I want to talk about jazz.
So what's your favorite jazz subgenre and what's your favorite album from that subgenre.
Bonus: what's the best track on that album and why
>>60164851
free jazz 2 based
hard bop I guess, pic related is my GOAT with I guess st Thomas as best track, but they're all really good
How do I start playing jazz on piano?
GOAT coming through.

>think of a note to play
>play it
They're all lined up there in order. Piano is literally the easiest instrument to play other than drums.

Going to listen to this tomorrow, what should I expect?
I already like Jazz Mood by him.
>>60165029
One of my favorite Hard Bop albums, have you listened to Freedom Suite?
I've been trying to listen to more modern jazz recently
These came in yesterday. I only realized just now that it's nothing but piano trios, but 27 out of 104 Jazz CDs being piano trio material isn't too much of a bias, is it?
Is this anyone's AOTY? It's some great funky jazz fusion, nice orchestrations throughout. This or maybe the Breathing Effect - Mars is a dangerous place for love.
>>60166824
Wow this is really cool
>>60166733
Nothing wrong with that. I agree that piano trios are some of the best music out there.
>>60166824
not a fan. I think they're all good musicians, but I'm not big on jazz fusion that isn't herbie hancock.
>>60164851
jazz is nigger classical
>>60168474
wow so edgy
I really enjoy Latin Jazz and other variations on straight 8th patterns like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I2SlCQ2xJVg

any one got any jazz charts? specifically a where to start with charlie parker chart, general where to start with jazz would be fine too
>>60171244
I'd start with the Ken Burns Charlie parker compilation or Clint Eastwood's Bird soundtrack. Jazz at Massey Hall and Parker with Strings are both essentials, check those out
>>60168706
hes not wrong
>>60171506
avant garde a shit
>>60169747

Start with the Dial and Savoy material by Charlie Parker. There are a million fucking compilations with those on, but word is the Spotlite ones are the best sounding. (I have the JSP box, which also sounds pretty good) Go for a box set with "masters" in the title because otherwise you'll get ten million alternate versions in a row.
Alternately, there's a 2 disc compilation called Yardbird Suite which is a pretty good overview of his whole career.
can anyone rec some lester young stuff? or stuff he did with count basie?
>>60175059
Pretty much anything Basie recorded on Decca is great, and almost all of it features Lester Young.
>>60175059
Aladdin sessions are a must have
and pic related, of course, as well as his LP with Sweets Edison
>>60177181
>pic related
Hard bop for life. Can I get some love for this man? Pepper Adams is my absolute idol as a baritone player.

The last good jazz album released was Kenny G's Breathless.
>>60164851
most of my favorite jazz is from before the album era. i like everything from louis armstrong/earl hines up to and including clifford brown/max roach, that period.
my favorite jazz combo is bud powell's modernists:
fats navarro
sonny rollins
bud powell
tommy potter
roy haynes
what a group !!
any recommendations for stuff like the John Lurie National Orchestra? I particularly like the really "tribal" sounding percussion. Most places describe it as avant-garde jazz which is too vague to find anything similar.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5XFnXfmIzMc
>>60179846
>bud powell's modernists
"This group is everything that's wrong with "modern jazz". No feeling or emotion, just lots of technical showing off and fast tempos with nothing new added to the music. This modern jazz will never capture the same feeling as "real" jazz."
-if /mu/ existed in 1950
>>60180084
it's pretty much where it ends for me though. the culmination of bebop (although, like i said, i'd include clifford brown/max roach). "everyhing that's wrong with modern jazz" would be for me thelonious monk (brilliant corners and onward). but that's just me.
>>60179356
lads ??
>>60179195
I really recommend getting into Spotify if your exploring classic jazz. It's often difficult to find downloads and there's a shit ton of classic jazz (especially mid 60's and older) on streaming services.
Definitely much easier than getting everything from Soulseek that I used to do before.
