Trip-hop not even a genre tbh. It's just method of production. Like using hip-hop techniques in non hip-hop music. In early 90's music critics used trip-hop termin instead of big beat. Like Chemical Brothers, Sabres of Paradise, Propellerhead, Coldcut and all this kind of groups. Then mo'wax and ninja tunes utilised this termin to their music. For example you can hear on one of early UNKLE's EP how DJ Shadow says something about trip-hop, i dont remember exactly what he say'd, whatever. Then so-called Bristol sound with vocals and shit. In the end this is what we call trip-hop now, but in fact with trip-hop termin you can describe pretty wide range of genres - from big-beat, turntablism, instrumental hip-hop to downtempo and whatever.

Its a widely misused label.
Trip hop IMO is basically the Bristol 3, early Ninja Tune and Mo Wax and then it died in the late 90s.
Most of whats called trip hop these days is just downtempo.
