I should specify, the key groups in this list are Melt-Banana and Xinlisupreme. While Melt-Banana are a key band in noise punk and thus are pretty well-known, Xinlisupreme never got the recognition they deserved. Yellow Magic Orchestra - One of the first Japanese electronic groups. They were pretty early in the grand scheme of electronic music overall, too. They tried to replicate the sound of a full orchestra with synths, and it kind of came out like 16-bit game music.

Japan's got a pretty cool noise scene, too, if you're into that. A lot of people have recommended most of the bands I'd recommend already, but no one's mentioned The Gerogerigegege yet. Just like Merzbow, don't start with their more famous stuff - most of their "lesser" albums are more interesting and memorable.
