Strange strings is just awful. Sun Ra at some of his worst. Magic City has the whole concept of being a sonic tour of this surrealist city thing going on and evokes a really mystical and busy atmosphere because of that. There's no discernible direction to anything on strange strings as far as I can hear.
>>
>>55407431
Nothing wrong with that, though I'd love more chicks on my board.
>>
>>55406984
lmao this nigga actually thinks you can understand shit about free jazz after 2 hours of "listening"

Guys.
Both suck.
>>
>>55406950
that is a fucking great album

my stepmother almost choked in the bathroom the first time i listened to that
>>
>>55407491
Magic City is also important on a personal level for Sun Ra, as he was born in Birmingham, Alabama which is known as the Magic City. I like the album a lot.

king crimson is free jazz?
>>
>>55407636
no, that guy is just being silly
>>
>>55407604
That's not a direction hun. The only thing that serves to do is produce thoroughly uninteresting trash and saying that you like that kind of stuff undermines anything you have to say about free jazz because it reinforces the idea that you could literally be listening to anyone shitting out atonal nonsense on a record.
>>
>>55407445
This nigga gets it.
>>
Free jazz is good but a little too structured for me at times, free improvisation is my preferred genre. Like something like Ascension is still so rooted in jazz, it's not true freedom, everyone plays together and then a solo and then they play together and then someone else gets a solo, etc. It's formulaic. Not what comes to mind when I hear the word "free".
>>
>>55406998
james joyce

ayyyy
>>
>>55407775
Well the label itself makes me think of any instrument or even effects.

It's not fair.
>>
>>55407846
Exactly, though that is what free improvisation is. A lot of times it's people playing things they've never played before or things that might not even be instruments, that sort of thing.

Sure, some people who play "free improvisation" choose to confine themselves but in free jazz you have to confine yourself to actually fit into the boundaries set within the genre.
>>
>>55407775
Jazz has improvisation, but they aren't usually just being completely random. They are skilled musicians and are attempting to work with different harmonies, etc. Free improvisation IS jazz, by the way.
>>
>>55407775
i thought "free jazz" and "free improv" were two names for the same thing, so i guess im in the free improv camp too, what you describe and more "conventional" jazz i just find inaccessible and kinda dull, i've always put it down to my taste not being mature enough to appreciate it.

this is the kind of stuff i like

>>
>>55407960
lol, I was listening to some slow acoustic song and suddenly what you posted started to play and it fitted the song very well. They were almost synchronised.
>>
>>55407636
They're not free jazz, but they are influenced by free jazz and have free sections in songs.
>>
>>55408034
what were you listening to?
>>
>>55408076
Supercheria by Pescado Rabioso
The best thing was that your song started playing just when they were playing a section for the last time, and when a long sax tone played at an important part of the song.
>>
>>55407960
Yeah, it's odd the way a lot of this music ends up. Because "free improv" (which is a terrible name to give a genre) kind of evolved out of jazz, you get a lot of instruments like sax being used by that camp. That link you posted is pretty thoroughly not jazz. There's no real defining characteristics of jazz you could ascribe to it bar the fact that it has sax. You may as well be calling it free marching band by that measure though.
People like Coltrane and demonstrated that the sax could be used to explore a lot of interesting timbres (which is what this kind of music relies on because it forsakes everything else) so you wind up with people in free improv using sax because there's lots of established ideas on how one can manipulate it's sound and it's such a versitile insterument.
>>
>>55407935
Some jazz musicians play it, but no, it's not jazz at all.

>>55407960
Nah, they are very different. Most of the big free jazz albums existed before free improvisation became a thing. Modern free improv is usually considered to have started with AMM. It is sometimes played by jazz musicians but there's a distinct difference. Free improvisation is, by definition, a limitless scope. Some people use electronics, some people use guitars, some people use brass, some people even use vocals, some are reserved, some are aggressive, it's really just whatever.
>>

>>55408199
thanks for the info.

its a shame what i though was jazz was infact not jazz.
>>
>>55408126
european free improv came about as a reaction to jazz. these boys saw the black american musicians doing their own thing making their own music and they wanted to do the same. they did not want to play other people's music.
>>
>>55406950
