How big of a role does the aesthetic of a noise album play when you are assessing it? I feel like noise music, since it is so loose as a form of music, has the opportunity to explore many themes. At the same time, its connection with those themes might be less significant.

Pic related for example. I think it's really neat to explore animal rights and wildlife in an album, but if you compared this to another of Merzbow's works would you be able to tell which one more influenced by dolphins without looking at the covers?
>>
>>55395653
Well, I tend to gravitate to more serious concepts - like stuff that isn't forced or, you know, memey. So as long as it isn't forced, I'll enjoy the concept if the noise sounds appealing to me. I think it's plenty significant when done right. When a noise album really immerses you into the concept with imagery and track titles, it's a really cool experience. That's what I really like about Hospital Productions.

>How big of a role does the aesthetic of a noise album play when you are assessing it?

As big of a role as it plays in albums of any other genre, which is to say that I do pay attention to it and think it plays a (sometimes significant)part in the perceptions of the sounds themselves. The art production technique, imagery, color palette, etc. that forms the packaging of a release all influence the forms and sensations I'll associate with the sounds.
The sonic and visual aesthetics should ideally work together to form a coherent work stimulating on all fronts. One should hammer the aim of the other home.
I won't praise inferior recordings if they come wrapped in an aesthetic that appeals to me and I won't shit on great recordings if I find the presentation of them amateurish and lacking(something as inextricably tied to homemade art and DIY as noise is the last medium in which taking offense to that makes sense IMO) but it is important to me.
Which isn't to say that the only aesthetics that resonate with me are the ones heavy on labor and ornamentation. I love the utilitarian, anonymous aesthetics commonplace when it comes to techno and house for example(or talking about noise, RRRecords' Recycled and Pure releases' looks that are completely irrelevant to the sounds, or Lust Vessel/Hanson tapes/some Hospital batches' reliance on unified graphic design).

>That's what I really like about Hospital Productions.

Yeah, one of the things I appreciate the most about Hospital and Fernow's projects is that inclination towards getting the most out of an idea(both visual and sonic; he's managed to cram pretty much every facet of Prurient's visual obsessions onto the cover of Frozen Niagara Falls in one way or another, which is quite appropriate considering his claims that FNF is a major statement on what Prurient is in the first place) and reusing motifs and themes in ways that give them completely new contexts(he does that a lot in his lyrics and titles as well).
Sometimes it's completely blatant and sometimes you only even notice it by accident.

Like the way he revived and updated the typography on Black Vase for the last two proper full-lengths...

http://www.discogs.com/Prurient-Bermuda-Drain/master/352050
http://www.discogs.com/Prurient-Through-The-Window/master/523979

...or the already mentioned unified themes in packaging and graphics when it comes to some Hospital release batches.

Also, the store has a shit ton of Einstürzende Neubauten in their industrial section - what would be their top three you'd recommend to begin with?

I've heard of that band though I didn't listen to anything they've put out yet. They're supposed to be quite good.

Kollaps, 1/2 Mensch, Haus Der Luege. Neubauten never released something not worth hearing though.

>>
>>55398315

You listened to the track for a minute... How can you form your opinion on it based on the first minute alone?
>>
>>55395653
i'd say sort of drifting from the traditional noise album to a noise 'concept album' of sorts is very refreshing and if that theme is executed well it can really help the album
>>

Thanks for the feedback, guys! You're right about it verging on dark ambiance, but I definitely think the noise elements of this track are prevalent enough to warrant it being shared here.

I'm with you on that bro (I've decided to stop calling people anon in /noise/, we're bro's). I like the Sacred Bones aesthetic

We had a discussion a couple of threads ago about how most Noise people are graphic artists for a living. So in light of this bro >>55395653 I think it is important because it makes releases have cohesion. It's a nice package too. Most of the art from noise I love. Everything from Sissy Spacek to the Wolf Eyes covers and the blown up pictures from Macronympha and the repeated iconography of Man Is The Bastard and Bastard Noise. It all adds to the package.
>>
>>55401164
pick two
>>55401352
forced cohesion for the sake of cohesion is petty and ugly
sacred bones will be remembered foremost for how they tried to forced their own identity on their records
>>
>>55401904
I feel this.

The art, sans Sacred Bones labeling, is pretty good usually. But when you look at works like Bestial Burden and pic related (Not familiar with the work, just picked it at random), you can only notice how clashing and unappealing forcing the label information on it is.

>Fav Hanson release?

Emaciator - Possessive
Skin Graft - Dystrophy
Prurient - Prurient
V/A - Michigan

>Fav American Tapes release?

I'm not a big fan of American and I haven't heard a lot of material on it. Most of those releases are just self-indulgent fucking about and throwaway half-formed ideas.

Birth Refusal - Cove Core
Graveyards - Formless Music From A Coming Age
Miscarriage - Miscarriage (this was a co-release by like 4 or 5 labels but American is one of them so I'm counting it)
Wolf Eyes - Human Slaughterhouse Demos

>Fav Fag Tapes release?

I like this label even less than I like American, in all honesty. I'm not too keen on these sorts of hyperproductive, throwing-shit-at-the-wall-and-seeing-what-sticks labels in general.
I like the idea and I appreciate the totally personal aspect but in practice I can't imagine most of the releases on them being of any interest to anyone other than the people who made them and those people's friends.

Sick Llama - Blue Syrup Dreams
Aaron Dilloway - Since He's Been Gone
Fail Sick - Stoned Nuisance

>Bonus: favorite Gods Of Tundra releases(since I always saw Hanson, American and Gods Of Tundra as brother labels)

Rodger Stella - Foucault Zombie
V/A - A Thousand Colors Blaze
Failing Lights - Combat Stance

That was me, it was a few years back. Must've been late 2010 - the massive 8xCS box sets had come out recently and I'd grabbed the Exploring Jezebel one online, then during a trip to the city I picked up the Alberich box plus a few other great things like a K.P. tape and a Les Joyaux De La Princesse flexi. I think he gave me a Lussuria tape for free. This was well after he'd moved upstairs but the space was still pretty small. Lot of stuff crammed in there for such a small space though.

what upcoming noise releases should I be hyped for bros?
>>
>>55402287

>>55402287
I disagree but it's also not important. Bestial Burden would have been an amazing cover with the sacred bones branding if they chose a different color for the font. I think the same for your pic too. Red does not work but perhaps a grey.

Definitely not forcing their identity. The artist does not have to release the records on that label.

I think of Vertigo comics. Vertigo is very into branding and their comics are fairly niche. It;s almost like a standard for what they want to put out. K Records is similar as is Janus Films.

I'm done posting about this.

I read that Macronympha interview a few weeks back (thanks to whoever posted that, I was in stitches) and Joe was saying how he loves the most intense harshest noise and he wants the stereo rumbling and over modulating and what not.

I have a few tape stereos. Shitty things that have been saved over the years. I kind of want to start playing some noise tapes over those and seeing the different responses. In effect the medium becomes part of the experiential listening.

Take Prurient for example (as he is touring now, and is always touring). Do you think he travels alone? Does he take a stage hand?

What does he drive? How much equipment does he bring (because his noise varies, I wonder if there is any sort of must needed equipment)?

I understand the importance of maintaining a mystery but I think it is interesting for those of us who are here frequently to discuss.

Following up. I found a link (I am a moron). This should go in the pastebin. Essential listening for someone looking to evolve their palette of noise

Can any noise expert tell me what does the Macronympha logo means? Looks cool af.

that is an amazing shirt

>>55422655
Yeah I did. Both are quality though Sexless Merit is much more basic and heavier on the homemade feel.

The amounts of gear and companions/assistants(noise artists and groups tend to tour together a lot, I imagine most artists have been on the road a lot more with other artists than on their own) probably vary from tour to tour depending on how an artist plans to approach the performances.

Talking about Prurient's case in particular when it comes to the amounts of gear used on tour though, he's pretty much always relied on getting the most out of minimal setups rather than dragging cases upon cases of equipment with him. Amps, a mixer, a mic, a few pedals and a synth, not much more to it than that as far as I can see. I imagine he's modified the gear that he does use though, at least some of it.

I'm just finishing up pic related, it's some pretty interesting HNW/ANW/not quite HNW.

What about his Vatican Shadow setup? I think it's 2 Ipod classics, cassette player and pedals?

As far as I know, yeah. Ipods, pedals and a cassette walkman or two.

it's actually abysmally small atm. I'm still seeking a second job so I haven't bought much physical formats at all. I've got some noise CD/tape/vinyl, but I want it to be much bigger. Also no blog yet. I just focus on keeping the pastebin full of downloads. I may move it to a share blog later on.
>>55424294
I regret not downloading the releases on their bandcamp while it was still up. Going to listen to this after some work.

Surprisingly solid review of the new EJ album, considering it's on TMT(or maybe I just like it because it aligns with my interpretation of the album, who knows).

http://www.tinymixtapes.com/music-review/exploring-jezebel-on-a-business-trip-to-london
>>
>>55431336
TMT can usually have some incredibly well written reviews, but because the majority of their staff are no much older than us (assuming "us" that is, they're in their mid 20s, I'm getting there)

they have a semi-bad rep on here, but when it comes to conceptually inspired electronic music, they're usually on point

that said though, I couldn't stand the new EJ album

did some googling, apparently you can get this on CDr if you're so inclined for relatively cheap. cumfunction()blogspot()co()uk/2013/09/vag-music-for-smoke-filled-elevators.html

Also this >>55426640 is going pretty well. It's more industrial centered, which I didn't realize going in but so far nothing's been a big miss.

Yeah, it's a lot more interesting conceptually than as an actual listening experience(though I do appreciate the gross, repressed atmosphere of it). Which I guess is bound to happen when you deliberately set out to make an album devoid of climax and direction.

Could some noisebros give me their opinion on a track? It's closer to drone than noise but there's definitely a lot of noise there

Agreed, Sacred Heart covers are ruined by that logo in the corner. Not to mention some of the art is borderline 2edgy (looking at you Bestial Burden and Dumb Flesh)

Pharmakon's covers are pretty awful, yeah. High-school-project level amateur photography shit.
They do a good job of reflecting the rudimentary nature of the music though.

Sick lineup. Though I would have had Aspa doing a Grunt set rather than a Pain Nail one.

Currently blasting Bestial Burden on vinyl, so good. The Sacred Bones stuff is annoying but at least you can barely read it on this cover as it bleeds into the image.

Anyone?
I'll get a bunch of his releases at random anyway but I'm curious about personal favorites.

kind of really late responding, but yeah I'd probably have Doom Patrol related lyrics. I have a children's book about Shockheaded Peter, the inspiration for the Scissormen, so I can just read that over a long ass track. If anything, I'd just quote bits and pieces of dialogue from certain characters. For example, I could do a track about Crazy Jane and just have shitloads of vocal tracks dubbed over each other, quoting her various personalities.

I think I'm actually going to do this, but it will take some time, since I have uni and work and shit that gets in the way of /noise/ and comics
>>
>>55397991
>Also, the store has a shit ton of Einstürzende Neubauten in their industrial section - what would be their top three you'd recommend to begin with?

Kollaps, Haus Der Luege, Perpetuum Mobile to get a sense of their variety.

Actually, I can't really judge. I bought a shirt from her when she opened for Cult of Youth. Then again, I bought it mainly because it had a big picture of Iggy Pop's dick, which seemed like a very /noise/ purchase at the time (Iggy Pop isn't noise but dicks could be, I guess)
