I put 11s on my Strat today, it was an excellent decision. It sounds a lot better now, and I actually find bending a bit easier.

If anyone is thinking about going up a gauge I would recommend it.

So I've noticed most of the past tab challenges have had the notes spaced purposely to signify an approximate rhythm. I figured I would space everything evenly this time and make everyone come up with their own rhythm from scratch

Why do you need to hear more than blues to decide whether a guitar is good or not?

If you want to hear good music, go listen to a record. The guy's showing a guitar and playing what he licks.

Don't be so autistic.

I think its more to do with the fact that one dimensional reviews don't do much to convey the versatility of a guitar. At least strum a few chords on the clean channel or something, shredding with a load of distortion doesn't really tell me much.

but you should go try the guitar yourself anyways
>>
>>55374008
He was talking about blues, which is usually played on clean and it's enough to get a grasp of the guitar's tone.

Who cares if he's playing pop, country, blues or funk? It's a guitar review, any of these genres is enough to show the guitar's tone.

He's just butthurt he doesn't like blues.

>>
>>55374047
Yeah, I completely agree with your point because that high gain shredding will fail to show the guitar's clean tone and the amp will heavily mask how the guitars sound.

But as a consumer, as long as the guy shows a guitar's clean tone, I can't give a shit whether he's playing metal, blues, country or anything else. I just want to hear the guitar being played on clean.

With the Tone and Wicker switches up and bridge pickup on, I get the best power chord fuzz I've used, but single string stuff is thin and lifeless. The Hoof is based on the Sovtek Tall Font Green Big Muff, which is entirely different from any modern big muff, especially the Tone Wicker.

It sounds absolutely and completely different.

You're not smart as you think.
>>
>>55378743
>the russian big muff is entirely different from the standard muff

Seriously, bro. Look it up. They put LEDs in the feedback loop.
People have traced this circuit TO DEATH and that was the key difference.
>>
>>55378743

What's the difference between the Tall Font green Sovtek Muff and the regular green Sovtek?
>>
>>55378772
Apparently you can't read so I'll tell you once again.

I'm here telling you the Hoof is based on the Green Sovtek Tall Font Big Muff. It has one extra knob which is the scoops or boosts mids. It was directly based on Dan Auerbach's green muff.

A Green Sovtek Tall Font Muff does not sound like a modern NYC Big Muff nor a Tone Wicker. There are literally dozens of original variations of the Big Muff and they all sound different.

You can trace all circuits you want but this won't change the fact that the similarities between a Green Tall Font Muff (original, hoof, wren & cuff or any other) and a modern Big Muff are little past their name.

Again, you're not as smart as you think.
>>
Hey guys, I've just bought a E-bow for 80 bucks. What are some good effects to use it with?

>>55378873
>You can trace all circuits you want but this won't change the fact that the similarities between a Green Tall Font Muff (original, hoof, wren & cuff or any other) and a modern Big Muff are little past their name.

So they all differ from the basic cascading high gain BJTs with clipping diodes in the feedback loop, followed by a severe tone stack, followed by a recovery gain stage?

I mean, we can bring schematics into this and see if there is no similarity beyond their name.
>>
>>55378885
Reverb and Delay are two very obvious ones

The Tall Font is bassier, has more gain and compression. The Bubble Font is a bit brighter as well.

About that mid control:
http://www.muzique.com/lab/tone3.htm

You don't have to read this shit if you don't want to fully understand how stupid you are. Just notice the fact that the ONLY difference is that they added a potentiometer at the top of the circuit block.

Adding a pot and four LEDs isn't quite a gargantuan learning and building task, you know.

I was joking around about using a bow about a thread ago.
I'm finally getting the hang of it. I need a better guitar for it, Jazzmaster bridges (or Fender bridges for that matter) don't curve enough to accommodate the bow.
Saving up for a Les Paul style guitar then. It'll be a good investment because I need something with humbuckers.
>>
What kind of strings should I get for my shitty acoustic, /gg/? I still kind of suck right now so I'm thinking some lighter strings might make me sound a little better.
>>
>>55380136
I play with the bow on the fretboard of my telecaster sometimes, to get the best angle. A little hard to bow any notes over the 12th fret, but it works.
>>
The closer I play to the bridge, the better I get full chords. The E, A, and high E are all easily accessed. Forget doing double stops on the G and D though.
Let me see if I can find a sample of something I improvised. It's a droney, metally piece, requires very little talent. As is typical of a /mu/tant musician.

Hey /GG/, I've been considering buying a Gibson flying v '67 reissue because I've always wanted a flying v and it seems like a guitar with versatile tone. If you played, own, or owned one, I would like to know your opinion on the guitars playability and construction. Also, I know that most gibsons are 22 fret 24 3/4" scale length, are there any drawbacks to this regarding fret size (med or jumbo) and string gauge?

Fender Tele (finally outgrown my metal phase, thank god), Ibanez RG721RW or S5521Q, probs will install Seymour Duncan 'Whole Lotta Humbucker' pickups. Also an actual amp rig with good pedals but you know, no money. Dream guitar is a Skervesen custom.
>How long have you been playing?
5 years
>Fav guitars?
Ibanez or Skervesen. I like thin necks because I do a lot of weird chord shapes and scale runs.
>Fav guitarists?
The CHON dudes, Tosin Abasi, Josh Martin, Jimmy Page, Guthrie Govan, Nicholas Llerandi

Check out this lo fi indie stuff I made once http://vocaroo.com/i/s1K11WDfVExp
All the sounds are the crap acoustic guitar audio edited heaps. I did a lot of post prod. obviously. The interesting part I think was how I got the synthy sounding bits. Just reverbed the crap out of the guitar recording, and reversed a lot of it. For percussion I literally just whacked the strings with my hand. All done in Audacity over like 6 hours 'cause I am a huge hipster faggot.
>General talky talk:
I play a lot of prog/tech stuff (CHON songs) for skillbuilding stuff, but I write mellow simplistic stuff. Currently in the process of starting up writing again in a new direction. I want my sound to be a bit similar to Porches, utilizing danceable rhythms and layered synth backing and stuff...hopefully after I've arranged an album's worth of material I'll recruit band members and play in the chill pubs I frequent.

My attempt: http://vocaroo.com/i/s1pek1DjlX6a
Excuse shitty recording, headset mic at 7.00am yo. Bit sloppy but you get the gist. I used a pick, hybrid picked the chords.
>>
I play black metal and can't seem to get rid of the loud pick attack noise when I'm tremolo-ing, especially with two strings. I know it's kvlt and everything, but when I put on a little bit of delay for a blackgaze effect it just becomes an overwhelming mess of pick noise.
>>
>>55373864
I haven't played a fanned fret guitar before but I've heard that it accommodates the natural shape of the hand better and becomes really comfy pretty soon.
The basic idea if you don't know is that you can use it for extended range guitars (7, 8 strings) or baritone guitars to keep the tension tight even on the lower thicker strings by giving it a longer scale length on the low strings and keeping it short on the higher ones. Pretty cool imo, looking into it for sure.
>>
I need 3 metal songs that are easy on all parts so that I can jam with musicians this week. They told me to pick.
>>
>>55380899
relax, and pick lighter. I have the same issue. I think you just gotta sorta relearn your tremolo pick technique, and start slow and light
>>
>>55380923
My favorites to play on guitar are
Dream Theater (I know, I know) - The Count of Tuscany (easy enough to BS, and you can always add more stuff until you're at the full difficulty)
Burzum - Jesu Tod (fun if you have a shitty rig)
The Ocean - Hadean (for dat dere polyrhythm practice)
>>
>>55373021
i used 12s for years, but i've wound up at 9s somehow on almost all my guitars. i miss the sound of 12s, but my playing is just so much better sounding with the lighter strings. i've got bitch hands i guess
>>
>>55379906
>>55380004
They behave VERY similarly.
>>
>>55380899
try positioning your pick a bit diagonal away from your hand to make sure it just barely grazes the strings, this also helps with speed.
>>
>nothing but pedal talk and arguing
How about you talk about music?
Is what you're practicing right now really challenging you?
How do you expect to get better if you're not challenging yourself?
>>
>>55381260
They do not.
>>
>>55381573
Dude relisten to the comparison video you posted, and try to tell me that the nonlinear behavior is any different, and that the difference isn't basically just in the tone stack.

You paid an extra $100 for a difference less than $2 in parts and less than $5 in effort.
For a relatively subtle difference in sound.
>>
>>55381533
I've been working on figuring out the relations between chords and proper shaping, and going through every scale I can to learn their intervals and how it determines relevant chords. it's not as challenging as it is time consuming, but I feel like I'm learning important things anyway.
>>
>>55381678
I've had both pedals. You didn't. You think you can predict how the pedals will sound based on your limited ability to read schematics.

I have paid, owned and extensively used both. You haven't. There are extreme differences between them.

That's how simple it is, whether this makes you mad or not.
>>
>>55381724
>muh anecdote

I can match your retreat to anecdote, though, by saying that I've done just about EVERY common Big Muff mod that exists. And the LED / mids pot mod is among the top five most popular mods out there.

I've spec'd them to the triangle, to the green sovtek, to the ram's head, to the hoof, to the swollen pickle. The most important difference is ALWAYS in the gain stage and in the tone stack. The behavior is ALWAYS the same, even when you don't use the same semiconductor topology. Use CMOS gain stages, same behavior, use JFETS, same behavior, use BJTs, same behavior. It all comes down to the biasing resistor, diode, and the tone stack.

There is NOTHING MAGICAL about a boutique Big Muff. There is NEVER anything that can't be done with two dollars and twenty minutes of time.
>>
I'm looking for a mid-range combo amp, mainly for playing black and death metal so I guess I'll go with solid state. Not too expensive. Any suggestions?

Nigga I have ~built~ the shit.
>>
>>55382000
No you haven't, not these specifics pedals built by these brands with the exact same components they use. You have built similar circuits with the same components built by different brands.

Also, regardless if the components cost $2 or $2k, they're enough to make them sound extremely different. And guess what, since I have a job and make good money, I can afford to pay someone the extra $60 it takes compared to the original to build it for me, unlike your poor ass.

Saying the tone differences between them is small just shows your complete inexperience. I can't give a shit what's inside, I'm interested in the sound.
>>
>>55381701
It's a good practice, if you ever pickup sheet music, you'll be able to start grouping chords into what they are rather than individual notes.
The shapes help a lot.
>>
I remember when /gg/ wasn't people throwing shit at each other about pedals. back in my day, it was throwing shit at each other over PRS being for rich white guys and whether or not tonewood made a difference.
>>
>>55382084
>No you haven't, not these specifics pedals built by these brands with the exact same components they use

Yes I have. The components they use are by no means obscure at all.
Also you're going to tell me that a fucking 5088 will differ in its behavior depending on who is manufacturing them? You have got to be goddamned kidding me.
>>
>>55382196

>Saying the tone differences between them is small just shows your complete inexperience. I can't give a shit what's inside, I'm interested in the sound.
>>
>>55382084
Let me try to elaborate on that.

A pedalmaker isn't going to use some fancy small-business manufacturer for their 5088s and 1N914s, because for one they would be MORE poorly built than a large manufacturer with tighter tolerances, and for two because they are going to buy hundreds of thousands of them for a fraction of a penny each, sit them in big boxes for decades, and be glad they didn't design their pedals with germanium.

The only time they will go to a specialty manufacturer is when the component is out of general production. Because it costs a premium and the manufacturing process is worse.

That's why you have to test the shit out of germ transistors. That's why matched germs for a fuzz face or a fuzz factory cost so much. Because in each run, there are only a few that are properly spec'd, because small electronics businesses are using old technology to make their components.
>>

I don't know if it's just me, but /gg/ seems like it's gotten a lot more boring and pointless in just this past week or so
>>

it's because there's less interesting discussions and more bitching and fighting.
>>
>>55382246
Listen.

EQD found two of the cheapest, most popular Big Muff mods and slapped them into a box and charged a hundred bucks extra. That was literally their research and design phase.

Step one: Find the cheapest, most documented mods
Step two: Solder them in, charge extra monis
Step three: Market them as magical
>>
>>55382380
>Regardless if the components cost $2 or $2k, they're enough to make them sound extremely different. And guess what, since I have a job and make good money, I can afford to pay someone the extra $60 it takes compared to the original to build it for me, unlike your poor ass.

>I can't give a shit what's inside, I'm interested in the sound.

That's fine.

Those cheap, easy mods sound pretty nice.
But the end result is still a Big Muff.
>>
>>55382441

And again, I couldn't give a shit as what you label it. It could be still a Big Muff, it could be now a Megazord, it could be Satan's New Born Child, it could be a BC Rich, you be focused on labels and semantics as you want.

It sounds different, it sounds much better, I paid a bloke meaningless money to make it for me. End or story.
>>
>>55382505
I'm okay with that.
Also the things are really well built, and not really ridiculously priced for a boutique job.

I just dislike mojo-talk.
I dislike the idea that these guys are billiant for basically just aping what others have shared for free.
It's an okay pedal, and they spent some time making sure the mods sit well together.

But it's still just a Big Muff.

Yet I said or implied none of this and all I literally said was that I had a Tone Wicker, disliked it and bought the Hoof instead which I thought sounded great.

As I said, I couldn't care less. YOU'RE the one who started this. You're the one triggered and startled by what I said

>You keep using low-tactics. And I'll keep substantiating my argument.
I'm talking to another person, your autism can interpret what I said any way you want, I just don't care.

At the end of the day you're just the guy eavesdropping other people then jumping in between them and shouting the apocalypse is near and everybody is wrong, while everyone laughs at you.

How fucking triggered can you even get?

Dude someone swapped out TWO components from a big muff. And you're like "This is incomparably different! No wait, the video doesn't count you have to FEEL the tone."

This is exactly what mojofags did with the Klon, with the Honeybee, with the ReezaFratZitz, with the Fulltone OCD. And they were all goddamned bullshit.

I'm just pointing out this is very typical guitarfag audiophile shit.
This is the language it always uses. The same rationale for defending itself. The same everything.

You can't do shoegaze with that guitar. It would be better with a fender Mexican strat. Don't get a line 6 amp if you're doing shoegaze, the mustang 3 v2 amp is perfect to get that dreamy sound, and the mustang amp will work best with all the pedals you need, or you could just go with the built in pedals. You can do Metal and any other music you want with a Mexican fender strat and mustang 3 v2 amp, so get those.

Do you have similar recommendations that can meet a 500 dollar budget? Again I'm just starting out so I don't need to get the best stuff.

I've heard people do Shoegaze with ESP flying V with EMG's and a Floyd just fine, the RG will be fine for playing metal and shoegaze but since it has no trem it won't be good for the "MBV" shoegaze and more along the lines of "Nothing" shoegaze.

>Implying you can't use a Gibson Hollowbody for metal and a BC Rich Warlock for Jazz or whatever guitar for whatever genre.

I would get a Fender Mustang II V2 along with a used guitar in the $250 range. The rest is for cable, gig bag, etc.

I really like playing in Eb. I usually stay in E but sometimes I'll spend a week or two in Eb. The lowest I go is C# for Sabbath.

I can't wait until I have enough money to build the partscaster I want so I can always have a guitar in Eb.

Yes, just buy a used squire for $50 bucks, buy dimarzio humbucker pickups, a fender tremolo, and new nut for $100, then buy the fender mustang 3 v2 amp for $330. Just look up youtube videos on how to install the gear into the ssquire, it's easy.

Now you can play anything you want for less than 500.

R8 my new bass.
Schecter stilleto studio 5.
Personally I love it. I haven't had a new bass in over 5 years so I've been pretty hyped to play it.

I've learned basically all the chords I need to know, but how do I get into picking the guitar?

I can do some tabs but I'm terribly slow, any sources of practice I could use to just learn picking in general?
>>
I don't know anything about guitar so this is going to be an extremely uneducated post using the most layman terms ever. I've only ever fiddled around with a guitar but recently I've found the strong urge to learn at least basic chords and it has been on my mind for about a month. Being honest I just want to play for my personal enjoyment and I want the guitar I get to sound like the guitar in the band Codeine. Could I be able to get a cheap guitar that sounds similar to this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0XQIT1_oKVY And what effects would I need to make it sound like that? Sorry for asking to be spoonfed and definitely coming off as an idiot, but it would be great if anyone could help out.

Hey anons, guitar pleb here
Is it me or do lightly rusted strings make shit sound really fucked up for you?
Also, any tips on lubricating the tone/volume knob on my guitar? It's making some weird interference when turning them and a pretty seasoned guitarist (my mentor so to say) has recommended lubricating the knobs a little but not too much
>>
>>55388535
If there is any sign of rust you need new strings asap.
>>
>>55388579
Yeah, I figured
I'm so far from my next paycheck and I'd like to invest on some good strings to get it to its better days again
>>
>>55388535
You don't need lube it's dirt, so just pop the off and clean it.

Thanks, based anon as always

If the pots are scratchy they need to be cleaned. Use contact cleaner. It's a simple job.

Don't worry, never had problem with my pot, thanks for your concern ;^)
Unfunny jokes aside, Tried cleaning it and it's definitely not making any more interference!

Alright guys, so I just found out I don't have to spend 1k on fixing my car, rather just $50. So what do I do with the remaining money? It was saved solely for use on my car and now I intent to use it on what I love. I just got a Yamaha THR-10 amp a month ago so now I'm thinking of new pickups in my Ibanez. What would you guys do with a thousand bucks?
>>
>>55390527
Save it up and put it towards a nice amp in the future

What amp would you want with a similar budget?
>>
>>55390578
Over here in Aus $1000 wouldn't get me anything decent so I'd save it up. I play metal so probably a 6505.

how to wank phrases as fast as humanely possible? my picking hand can do it but my fret hand can't jump strings quick enough

what exercises should I be practicing 12 hours a day
>>
>>55391250
what

just practice whatever you're trying to learn at slow speed until you can play it perfectly, then practice it a bit faster until you can play it perfectly and repeat until you get to full speed

Can someone give me some info on usb interfaces

Is there such thing as better quality?

If I buy a cheap usb to guitar adaptor will it affect the sound?
>>
>>55391579

I think all interface more or less sound the same, but the latency they have would be different.
