Has any rap record successfully pulled off the "rapping with a live band." Because musically this is great, but the rap's a bit uninspired.

<in b4 The Roots. never really dug them.

BBNG should collaborate with MF Doom and Flying Lotus.

I loved it

Action Bronson tried a bit of it this year on Mr. Wonderful, and there are a couple great tracks on the album, but overall it's pretty uneven.

I guess the Beastie Boys did it decently on Check Your Head, but I don't like the rap/rock combo all that much.

A bit too smooth jazz / easy listening for my liking, but thanks for the suggestion.

Kids These Days are pretty good. It's a group Vic Mensa was in before he went solo. It's not all rap, though.

this is more like a live sample. i'm looking for music where the backing song can stand on its own musically. i guess there's probably not a lot of examples.

Here's another one.

nice. don't think it's better than ghostface, much closer to what i'm looking for. wish there was another instrument or two in there though to fill things out.

If you mean things like Dilla, then no that's not what I'm after. Plunderphonics either. Live band... Be it jazz, lounge, funk, (hesitate to say rock, because i dont want anything like Kid Rock), with someone rapping over it. Really, the best example is the Ghostface album up top.
>>
>>55333808
It's definitely rappier, but unfortunately the whole thing sounds kinda corny. Thanks for the suggestion though.

also the song 3 minute rule on Paul's Boutique has a lot of live instrumentation. The bassline in that song is played by Mike D I think. It's the best song on the album.

Don't really know if this counts as rap or rock but The Knux are pretty good

I might be the only one here who enjoys the Linkin Park/Jay Z mashup shit, but I thought it was great.

Also Kanye rapped with a live orchestra and I believe Jay Z does have a live band with him as opposed to just a DJ when he performs live.

thanks. don't know why i hadn't heard this before. seems like he cheats the concept a bit and uses samples instead straight up rapping in studio with a full live jazz band. but it's really nice stuff.

>And any Beastie Boys record
They don't use a live band a lot of the time.

Licensed to Ill was basically a bunch of typical early Rubin beats, HSC2 was a bunch of super compressed beats, for example.
>>
>>55334747
>>55334832
When they do it's good, though. Really love the live stuff.
>>
>>55334747
NEver knew Cunninlynguists used live instruments, although that makes a whole lot of sense because it sounds so organic and I always wondered how they managed to do so lol

some of the Chance + The Social Experiment songs are pretty good

You guys are forgetting that it's a miles davis album. Sit down and think about his contribution to this.
>>
>>55334870
It's a mix of both, they play a lot of bass and keyboard in most of their albums paired with beautiful samples.
>>
>>55334386
>>55334883
oh nevermind, it gets worse. but mostly because it's too fast. someone should slow that album down by half and re-up it. or maybe by 75%.

Sadly, that song does nothing for me. I know they're talented, and they're tight, but nothing I've ever heard by them has made me want more. I'm sure I could find something on one of their albums that I like if I dug deep enough.

I always thought they just rapped over samples. Instrumental-ish samples and loops that come together to approximate a band, but not a band. Am I mistaken?

>>55335421
Yeah, not a fan of tbk, but as a backing band this may work. Thanks.

>>55335955
Great, even though it's mostly a live band playing a sample. Like others have said... DOOM x BBNG needs to happen.
>>
>>55336653

yeah the whole first/self-titled album haiku d'etat was a bunch of san fran musicians doing the beat. the second one (coup de theatre) is regular production, but it does feature a track with project blowed and quannum trying to outshine each other (aceyalone starts it and holy shit does gift of gab end it)

here's my favorite one off of that first album >> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SyvymjYTd_E

and here's that one i mentioned off of the second one >> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ayiB8F6mv0
>>
>>55336503
Don't get me wrong. Shit's fantastic. But it's just standard instrumental hip-hop production, not a live band. Really dig this one:

It's actually all backed by Will Sessions and his band. I don't know if it's entirely live (probably not) but the instrumentation isn't sampled.

>>55335955
holy shit, as a huge DOOM and a big glasper fan, im suprised i've never seen this
>>
>>55337196
>>55337234
I take it back to an extent. I know it says it was played live, and I don't doubt that they recorded original instruments, but does this sound like a live band to you?

https://youtu.be/eHBdH8aj5Co
>>
Speaking of BBNG, if you've never seen them live, you're missing out.

However, most of the songs (performed) are hard-hitting tracks so expect for moshpits and crowd surfing.
>>
>>55333495
thats dope. thanks.
