dude I think everyone that takes this thing seriously goes through that, just keep at it m8, take a producing class at a cc just to kinda be with other people like you, and to give all the people who don't think it's productive an excuse. Trust me you will go through some pretty depressing moments when finding your way through this thing but stick it out in the end so you can play at that festival that Natalie attends with her fuck ass friends, and when she's in the audience she'll look up at you on stage and will regret all the times she ignored your texts.

Writing a solo flute piece for an upcoming composers workshop.

It looks so empty compared to any other project. Forced to work with a single line and create [and hold] interest with melody only. not an easy task. condensed 15 minutes of sketches down to 5 minutes...

Then I get to export the whole thing as a MIDI file and import into sibelius and score it out for a real player.

You're always much more critical of your work when you know its going to be performed in front of a room full of established composers and recorded, and then you have to front up and answer questions about the work.

what is the piece trying to say? is it just some nice melodies? is there a good reason for it to exist? is there some kind of struggle that gets resolved? was it just some notes you improvised into your DAW with little else going for it? does the piece have an economy of material? does it have motivic development?

Music for the sake of music is something special.
It's also often classical music.

How do I make this with Reason 4.0?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybgsUo5kcyM
>>
>>55294424
This sounds exactly like what I want to do; compose music that means something and isnt just shit thrown on paper. Im currently trying to move out of that "shit thrown on paper" phase.
>>
>>55294501
>Reason 4
my neggra

Pads, lots of reverb.

thats pretty much it. make sure your reverb has more wet than dry, then just layer long pad notes that weave into each other.

as for the guitar part, its a real guitar so kind of hard to do that with just a DAW, reason has some guitar samples, but it probably wont sound as good as a real guitar.

as for the effects on the guitar... unsure. lo fi and bitcrusher sounds, ring mods, that kind of things.

A track like this would take a long time to put together, lots of detail.

Critical thinking is a very liberating (or limiting) thing for music. One one hand having a concept for a piece can help it become more than just music, but in the end its still only music to you can't have too much concept and too little music. its a tough balance. sometimes just writing some tunes results in amazing pieces, and sometimes the best concept for a piece will yield nothing interesting musically.

I'm pretty new to creating tones and what not, I'm not too sure on where to start.

I have an upright piano, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, and amplifier with a good amount of basic effects though.

Hey /prod/, looking for some feedback on this:

https://clyp.it/iz0et111

I don't really know what genre it is, it just kind of materialized this way. Just wondering what y'all think of it as a track, it hasn't been mixed much at all yet. I think ideally it would be much longer but it's for a school project and has to be under a certain time limit.

Note: my guitar playing sucks lol, it's more of a placeholder for a better player to come in and play it

Any Ableton friends around? I'm having problems with it recognizing VSTs. I installed everything to the default VST folder, but it won't recognize my Guitar Rig, or Voxengo SPAN plugins. I can't figure this out. It's NOT a 64/32 bit issue, everything is 32 bit.

The plugins show up in the browser, but sometimes not. If I try to drag it to a track, I get the plugin not found error. I did some Googling, it said to run Ableton as administrator. I did that, only the project is empty now, not my custom template, and it won't load any samples. Also, it's not authorized when I do that.

This is getting really frustrating. Everything works fine in Fruity Loops, and Live 8. How do I fix this? I would switch DAWs, but I'm still using XP (old comp, tfw poor). I really like Ableton's workflow, especially session view and don't want to use something else.

Like the fast percussion at the start. I think it'd be quite good if you kept it minimal and didn't layer it with so harsh sounds
>>
i feel like i ask this in every thread, but where do find interesting vocal material to add to my beats/tracks? accappellas are hard to find and you can't really efficiently sample vocals without the rest of the track

The converse sample pack from earlier this year has a lot of good acapellas. There's the obvious acapellas4u.

haha nice bro! you're welcome.
>>
>>55293852
This is so true.

People always seem to think that they can just take something up and be good at it right away and if they see someone that is better than them in the first month/year then they are not talented or the better person has a "natural talent" they don't see the thousands of hours the "naturally talented" person has poured into their interest.
I wouldn't even like to think about the amount of hours I've poured into music production, but I have friends that have probably put in twice as many hours as me, due to me having a full time job and them persueing a music career and not having a job.
I'm in my late 30's now and still making music as it interests me and I've never stopped learning from it. Being a success isn't always the best judgement of your creative skills, but looking back and seeing how far you have come since you started can be.
Godspeed suckers!
