What are your favorite jazz albums to smoke to?
What are your favorite albums that you think were recorded under the influence?
Are there any jazz albums that you never liked until you listened to them stoned?

Any other jazz related discussion welcome as well.
Let's try not to let the thread devolve into arguments about the decision to smoke or not smoke weed. Some people like it, some people don't. That's ok.

Could you rec me some cool Cool Jazz?
I am already into Davis, Tristano, Mulligan, Brubeck and Evans.

Branford is pretty great. I've always liked his playing better than Wynton's.
>>
I haven't been keeping up with jazz this year. Any must-hear albums so far?
>>

Louis Armstrong was a notorious smoker as well.

A really old guy I know saw Louis Armstrong play in the 50's and said his band stood out back and just smoked weed in between every set

weren't Monk and Powell beaten up by cops for weed as well ?
>>
>>55279238
I know Powell was.
It wouldn't surprise me if Monk was too, I remember reading that he liked to smoke and drink quite a bit.

Check out Jimmy Giuffre's pre-1960 music

Any opinions on Ravi Coltrane?

I never see him mentioned here.

Any opinions on Robbie Coltrane? The actor who portrayed Hagrid in the Harry Potter movies, and also played a pedophile bear in the Canadian movie "Gooby?"

I never see him mentioned here either I guess.

I think I have a cd of Ravi Coltrane at home but I can't remember what it is like. will try to find it back next time I visit my parents

>>
>>55279592
I like Ravi's playing a lot. I'm not sure he'd be as well-known if Coltrane wasn't his dad, but he'd definitely make it as a player. He's got a very nice modern style with jussssst enough of a Coltrane-esque sound. He'll have brief moments where something he plays reminds me of his dad, but really incorporate it into his own style.

Spiritual jazz is best to smoke to. It's colorful and not too demanding.
Don Cherry, Pharoah Sanders, Maurice McIntyre, Sun Ra, the list could go on...
>>
What ever kind of jazz you normally like is the best to smoke to you dumb dumbs

>>

Because Brötzmann is so chill amirite?
>>
>>55279592
I didn't think Robbie Coltrane was a very good choice for Hagrid. Not gruff enough.
>>
>>55280142
You only listen to chill music when you're stoned?
>>
>>55280320
You never smoke with other people?
>>
>>55280330
I do but I'm not sure how that's related
>>
>>55280356
I could sit down and smoke to harsh music with maybe one or two of my friends, but most people have different taste, especially in jazz.
The goal is to put on music that anyone could enjoy.
>>
>>55278930
Rudresh Mahanthappa- Birdcalls
Chris Potter- The Sirens
Tim Warfield- Spherical
Jack DeJohnette- Made in Chicago
Alex Sipiagin- Balance 38-58
Chris Lightcap’s Bigmouth- Epicenter
Matthew Shipp- To Duke
EJ Strickland- The Undying Spirit
Burak Bedikyan- Leap of Faith

all worth hearing from this year imo
>>
>>55280396
>>55280356
Also, if that isn't your goal when you put on music for a group, then you have the tism.
>>
>>55280438
I don't know why you're assuming my post was talking about smoking in a group though
>>
>>55280468
while were on the subject though

What are the best jazz albums for smoking with a group of people?
>>
>>55280496
not really my favorite but Head Hunters is usually a crowd pleaser
>>
>>55280665
>>55280496
Pretty much this. Jazz funk is best pleb sub-genre.
>>
>>55280468
Why even make the "whatever you listen to normally" post though?
It's retarded, trite, and contributes less than nothing.
>>
>>55280738
>It's retarded, trite, and contributes less than nothing.

That's fitting I guess as the question it responds to is also retarded, trite, and contributes less than nothing.
>>
>>55280803
Except people like music recommendations, and nobody likes contrarian faggots.
>>
>>55280803

I never really liked free jazz until I listened to it stoned. But I never really explore the genre much before that either...

>>55280496
this album is usually a crowd pleaser among people who already like jazz
>>
>>55281228
That's a great little album, not even that big a jazz fan, just saw this show up on the front page. If you haven't got it give it a download, well worth it,
>>
What are some pleb jazz albums/artists and their patrician equivalents?
>>
>>55281405
pleb option: Using words like "pleb" or "patrician" to describe music or music listeners

patrician option: listening critically to music and using meaningful, insightful criticisms to evaluate the music you listen to.
>>
Is there any good jazz made with an electronic drumset?

Is it even possible?
>>
>>55281815
can't think of any
>>
>>55281815
If you count/enjoy nu-jazz, then probably.
>>
Why do people say jazz is better when you're high?

I find most jazz boring and I find it even more boring when high.
>>
>>55282069
Same reason people say any music is better when you're high: they like it, so it allows them to better enjoy the high.
