My band used them for recording full set rehearsals and demos. Pretty handy things to have around when you don't want to lug around a laptop full of programs apps and shit.

There's no purpose for them anymore. Want lo-fi sound? 4-track is better. Want expanded features? Record digitally. The 8-track lies between and does neither as well as the others.

It depends how i would want the sound. If i'm not concerned with squeaky clean tone then i'll go for it.
