I've always assumed that Rush, King Crimson, and Yes were the holy trinity. Am I wrong? I don't feel wrong.
>>
>>54888047
There is no Holy Trinity. Only prog.
>>
>>54888047
I'd say it'd be Yes, King Crimson, and Genesis. I love Rush, but they'er in a bit of a different league with having a more heavy metal edge to them.
>>
>>54888047
jethro tull over rush i would think
>>
>>54888162
Look at this faggot.
>>
Which one is prog AOTY so far?
>>
>>54888074
I agree with this.

but if I were to throw another band in with Crimson and Yes, it would be Genesis.
>>
>>54888357
Can I do this based entirely on cover art like I usually do?
>>
>>54888357
Check out Troyka - Ornithophobia if you haven't heard it, my prog aotysf
>>
>2015
>Listening to kid prog

Magma, Univers Zero and Animals as Leader shit all over those bands.
>>
>>54889219
>not mentioning Gong instead of Magma
pleb

>read this
>try it myself
>these covers
God... Mondo Drag is good, but also wins by default cause the rest are shit
>>
>>54889299
I knew Mondo Drag was going to be best girl and I haven't listened to any of it. You can just tell who makes good music by what kind of cover art they will accept.

Pretty much.

quiz time, good or bad
>>
>>54889219
>Animals as Leaders
Good joke m8
>>
>>54889383
Good, but would not force any of my friends listen to it in a car.
>>
VdGG is pretty alright too
>>
>>54889527
What's the matter, too polyrhythmic for you?
>>
>>54888357
Haven't listened to like 3 of those but I know prog SOTY is Comfort Zone from the Beardfish album
>>
I'd say in terms of not sounding like cheesy wankfests (looking at you Gentle Giant) it would be King Crimson, Yes and Soft Machine
>>
>>54888158
Rush was prog for a few albums, but they evolved into grunge and new age stuff for much longer
>>
>>54890030
>new age
You mean new wave, right? Even in their prog days they kind of had a new wave sound, with chorused guitars and synths and whatnot. It always made them stand out from the crowd, and really helped them survive in the 80s when they pushed those elements into the forefront.
>>
>>54889645
Pure wank, I bet you also think Periphery and Textures make deep music
>>
>>54890173
yeah, sorry
>>
>>54889383
can't find this, anyone got link?
>>
>>54890030
Rush was prog up until the early 90's. I'd say they are predominantly a prog band.
>70s
prog folk
>80s
prog new wave
>90s
grunge metal
>>
>prog is rarely progressive and is often one band being innovative and everyone else copying them for the next decade or so until the next thing comes along.
Discuss.
>>
>>54889219
wow you're such a patrician contrarian because you don't like actual prog. If you don't Genesis you don't like prog
>>
>>54891098
No two major prog band from the 70s sound the same. Even when you're going through the B-list, no one sounds the same. It's only when you start hitting the C-list that you encounter some copycats. I'm not sure how you managed to come up with this terrible blanket statement.
>>
>>54889219
>Animals as Leader
A poor man's Scale the Summit
>>
>>54891098
This applies to neo prog a lot. Shit like Marillion is literally just copying 70s Anglo prog
>>
>>54891205
I didn't come up with it. I heard it somewhere and didn't feel like arguing at the time. Also he was talking more about prog metal where I can't really disagree.
>>
>>54891224
because they're instrumental prog?

AAL's djenty techno shred
STS is elaborate post-metal
>>
>>54888047
Tool, APC, Puscifer
>>
>>54891021
don't pretend Rush wasn't just a cheese dick alternative to Yes.
>>
>>54892577
Aside from a high-tenor vocalist, and aggressive bass, the two bands don't really sound alike at all.
>>
>>54892577
Totally different bands. Do you even listen to music?
>>
>>54889219
Haha what an avant-teen
>>
>>54892608
Not really sounding alike as much as they are directing towards different people. For example, Yes was more psychedelic while Rush was more intense. They were still in the prog spectrum, I just always favored Yes over Rush because Rush seemed douchier.

Don't talk shit about Marillion, this album legitimately made me cry, they really moved beyond the Genesis influence here
>>
>>54892687
Yes is music more complex than Rush, but you're acting like they're both on the cusp between just rock and prog rock. And I don't know what you mean with Rush sounding douchier

Yes doesn't sound edgy in any way while Rush can be and often is edgy as fuck and gives you the chuuni vibe the kid who listened to a lot of rush had.
>>
>>54891098
that's because first prog bands were actually making something new and different, hence the name of the genre. Later the term became the association of the style of those bands. Now understand?
>>
>>54892783
It actually refers to the use of non standard instrumentation and song structure compared to the rest of the rock genre.
>>
>>54892763
I absolutely don't get an edgy vibe from Rush. Maybe a pseudo philosopher vibe but never edgy.
>>
>>54892763
Exactly.
>>
>>54892883
>pseudo philosopher vibe
That's it exactly It makes me think of teens who are slightly more well-read than their friends and become all edgy because of it. Knowledge can be edgy depending on how it's presented. Just look at where we are.
>>
>>54892732
That one.
>>
>>54892942
I guess the biggest point would be the know it all edge and the babbys first cynicism as opposed to the careful ignorance and harsh but playful cynicism of Tull.
>>
>>54892942
Meh, I still love Rush. They're cheesy but they're also heavy and beautiful
>>
>>54893086
I'm not knocking it, it works sometimes, but it's one of those things I started noticing when I looked at he fans. Like how Dream Theater fans have never listened to any other music in their life and have the shittiest recs.
>>
>>54888158
This. I came here to post the same thing.

Holy trinity?

Rush is the holy trinity.
>>
So I've never really listened to Genesis and I'd like to give them a try. The thing is I absolutely can't stand Phil Collins vocals. What's a good album where he isn't the lead singer?
>>
>>54893595
Learn to love them. Feel his vocals in the air tonight.
>>
>>54893618
It's never going to happen, man.
>>
>>54893670
Then it's all been a pack of lies.
>>
>>54893595
If you want proggy Genesis, you won't have to worry about Collins singing. Listen to Foxtrot
>>
>>54893799
Cool, thanks.
