Isn't it curious how most /dark/ music prospers in Russia these days.

Most of neighbours from my old last.fm account were all ruskies who listened to shit like harsh noise, death industrial, neofolk and other obscure shit.

And now I noticed that most classic acts from the 80s like Current 93 and Coil all provided reissues of their albums in cyrillic for their fanbase in Russia.

Russia is also a popular touring destination for newer bands like Cold Cave as well

Z'EV is a tricky one.

While some of his work is rhythmic, the most part of it it's acoustic drumming like his singles and the compilation Bust This!

And the metallic/machinery part is often abstract and noisy like Production and Decay of Spacial Relations and Salts of Heavy Metals.

If he only found a way to mix both.

I've only been able to get into maybe the first two Bad Seeds albums but The Birthday Party is just the best and they count as goth in some way. Alcoholic heroin-using Old Testament Nick Cave is pretty good.

That second track was great, the bass in the first was a little awkward, but I'm sure its just an issue in the mix.

These are great! What about some stuff with a more danceable rhythm or beat? Or maybe even a walking rhythm a la robert johnson?
>>
>>54880624
I should say, I love the bad seeds, theyre fucking great. But Nick is kind of mediocre a lot of the time to me. I get its his style, but flat nouveau dracula vocals aren't really what gets me off. Gotta give him some credit for (I assume) getting everyone together and directing composition, but the bad seeds definitely elevate that shit to a level nick couldn't come close to without them it seems
I'm just stirring shit up while I listen to a bunch of recs.
>>
>>54881022
Really I don't know why you'd put somebody on the spot with an industrial rock category. Industrial metal for journalism and criticism purposes is pretty much anything inspired by industrial that has synth and distorted guitar and drum machines, or anything that sounds like it does, and is on every movie soundtrack from 1992-2004.
>>
>>54880953
>>54880991
Closer guy here again. I gravitated from shoegazing in high school to dream pop to goth, a logical progression in reverse chronology I'd say. Because I was into punk since age 12 and the Ramones are my favorite band ever, the punk-derivative first wave of goth (Bauhaus, Cure, Siouxsie, Joy Division, Specimen, Christian Death, et al) is the strain that moves me most. I am just now branching off a bit into the other subgenres after years so forgive me if certain ones are ill-defined for me. I'm mostly trying out stuff from this current decade.
>>
>>54881047
bracketspoilerbracketiwasjustpretendingtoberetardedbracketslashspoilerbracket
>>
>>54881047
Fair enough.

>>54880991
I like categorizing it, if I want to rec someone goth rock it's ok to separate gloom and doom stuff like The Cure and cheesy-spoopy, drum machine-filled stuff like Alien Sex Fiend.
>>
>>54881081
I'm not questioning your musical taste at all. It's perfectly fine. It's stupid to even try to put stuff like this into little boxes is the thing, not your fault.
>>
>>54881121
It's way messier than that, and the songwriters who lead themselves to believe it's not end up inevitably writing shitty music trying to fit in, and all too often naive kids convince themselves they like shitty music because some autist has put it in the same little pigeon hole as good music. Shadow Project could be shoved anywhere from death rock to stoner metal to trad jazz to adult contemporary depending on what verse of what track of what album you let an autistic person listen to. You're dehumanizing the artists.
>>
>>54881121
I see the worth of having categories but I don't know how defined the genres are and what artists fit into which ones. It doesn't seem to be very agreed upon and I think a big reason for that might be the waning popularity of goth in general. It's not taken as seriously anymore in the mainstream, not that most of us care anyway.

>>54881131
No harm done, never perceived you as questioning my preferences.
>>
Sorry, didn't mean to kill the thread. Have some Porl
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWciXDWiKkk
>>
>>54881224
Then I'll put Shadow Project as experimental rock, just like the first CD album is more raw-deathrock and the second is gloom'n'doom goth rock.

It's funny how you make a big deal over this, everyone knows that the musicians who categorize themselves as a genre are shitty (metal bands for example). But the ones who do this aren't at all conditioned by anyone, they just do it because they were after all shitty from the start.
>>
>>54881382
Yeah that's kind of my point. I'm a musician myself and I probably am more prone to cringing at it that a listener. Whatever, I'm not as bent out of shape as I've been sounding, just being loud and dumb.

It's American, it's spooky, it's not metal, in my book it's death rock. some would call it goth. some would call it darkwave because there's not only a sequenced synth, but also a keyboardist. There's a little death metal going on in there too around the corners.

Carrying on this conversation with a couple more of my wits about me, Catastrophe Ballet you would still objectively have to call death rock. This wasn't really a judgement call thing in the late 70s and the 80s. Unless they were aware of each other and deliberately trying on each other's sounds, if it was from the US it was death rock, if it was from the UK it was goth rock, especially if we're talking SoCal and rural England.

I would say that distinction probably lasted up to Screams for Tina and Nosferatu. Didn't really apply to the Cleopatra wave.

Industrial metal: metal-themed Billboard music using electronic backing and (usually) standard thrash metal guitar practices. More self-aware than nu metal, more populist than industrial proper. KMFDM, Ministry, Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson, Rammstein, etc.

Industrial rock: no idea.
>>
>>54883926
Like calling an American band goth from that period would be like calling an American band K-pop now. It's a location-specific label with an objective meaning in that sense.

And qualifying my position to sound not quite so extreme, Skeletal Family borrowed a few things from bands like Theatre of Ice, and you could fairly describe them as death rock if you were so inclined. The silly London bands like ASF, I don't know if I would even call them goth rock. Batcave is batcave. Then again, I'm the guy who listed a Specimen album as my favorite goth in your survey, so I dunno. There are very few bands from before the early 90s who wouldn't be at least slightly offended by being labeled goth really.
>>
>>54884076
Nine Inch Nails is mostly industrial rock. Young Gods can be an example also.

One thing I've always liked about /dark/ is it's never gotten raped by payola or become flash-in-the-pan. The quality is very audience-driven, and a 20-something in 2015 can appreciate it on the same level as a 20-something did in 1985.

For that matter, a 60-something in 2015 can appreciate the new stuff the 20-somethings are making on the same level as the /dark/ in 1985.

Never heard ASF's "Satisfaction" before. I love it though, especially how they turned that fuzz guitar riff into a brooding synth line. Thanks.

Bauhaus did Ziggy and did it as close to the original as they were capable of doing it, specifically because critics were writing them off as a Bowie knockoff at the time. Spiteful little stinkers.
>>
>>54887312
If the gen pop had the kind of access to music around 1996 as they do now, with the label situation and genre separation they still had then, The Wake would probably be considered meme rock at the time. They held up in hindsight. SfT and LW are a lot earlier and more authentic to what The Wake was playing with conceptually.

Haha /mu/ would shit on it so fuckin hard.
I always kind of liked glam rock, the posturing was silly, but I always felt like certain artists used it as a tool. By making themselves so over the top, they got over the importance of image and were able to give the performance they felt.

Having a hard time with you alluding the stones were glam rock. Jagger was a showman, but the stones as a band never really got glam in my eyes. Especially not while they were doing their best work
>>
>>54875449
> 3Teeth
DEM WHISPER SCREAMS (You know he just kinda whispers through compression and distortion live, right? )

Also, the band is more sound design than songwriting. You want a band that was similar, but a million times better? Listen to 16 Volt's "Skin" album.
>>
>>54887931

And like don't get me wrong, I'm not quick to write anything off. I actively try to enjoy things and understand them and give them huge chances. DG is fucking good at what they're doing, and some elements of it would be a good influence on new /dark/ if somebody wanted to take it that direction, but in and of itself, it's just not.
>>
>>54888035
Then how the hell can you enjoy such a cynically put together band like 3Teeth? They're just some wankers from LA that found the Zalgo font several years too late and constantly post pseudo-political conspiracy bullshit.
>>
>>54888073

I enjoy their blunt, stupid, anti-intellectual edge
>>
>>54888089
Fair enough, but it just baffles me why all of these mediocre throwback "industrial" folks are getting attention. Like, why bother listening to 3teeth when there's 16volt...why bother listening to Youth Code when Mentallo & The Fixer and early wumpscut records are still readily available? Why bother listening to Pharmakon when there's NON's God & Beast?
>>
>>54888191

I was with you until NON

Anything with Boyd Rice's name attached to it is always some form of obnoxious garbage or another
>>
>>54888215
Yeah, his philosophy is edgy but his music is still pretty good. The sound design on God And Beast is fucking wicked.
>>
>>54886947
I was in highschool in the 90s and we complained about the Marilyn Manson kids. The problem with them was that they were just content with whatever edgy shit was on MTV and never thought to dig deeper for music that spoke to them instead of sold them shit. They were another animal not worth anybody's time.
>>
>>54879497
Ego death!!
>>
>>54888353
And furthermore, they inevitably snubbed "chill hippie shit" if you tried to show them something going on at the time like Switchblade Symphony or Big Electric Cat, and would move on to ICP and Korn and Slipknot, eventually give up, fuck some trailer trash and shit out five kids and drop out of school.

And the older I get, the more I shy away from wanting to downplay the fashion end of things too. There are undertones of consumerism there, yeah, but it does mean something.

At least where I'm from, anybody showing up in "the uniform" (for the sake of argument, something like jnco jeans and a fishnet shirt for guys, plain little black dress and knee boots for girls), they stand out just as much as somebody showing up in jeans and a T-shirt as not really knowing what they're doing. Dressing how you feel, especially if the outward result is a little outrageous and expensive, just shows you're thick-skinned enough to not mind letting everybody know who you are, and smart and responsible enough to design and buy that shit.
>>
>>54894126
I mean this is a little scene in BFE I'm talking about, and it's a hell of a fashion show. There's a tiny older guy, ridiculously muscular, just wears like wrestling boots and velvet tights, no shirt, and he owns it. Other nights he'll show up in a mourning dress. Another guy dresses kinda steampunk, but has figured out how to take androgyny full-circle and end up hypermasculine. Another guy wears a long women's skirt and a bondage top kinda like Pinhead. The girls go from Wednesday to fairy dresses to flyboy-type outfits with riding boots over aviator pants. Everybody's so different, but you know you're in the right place immediately, and you can tell who'd be worth hanging out with and who's just there to be seen pretty reliably.
