Isn't it curious how most /dark/ music prospers in Russia these days.
Most of neighbours from my old last.fm account were all ruskies who listened to shit like harsh noise, death industrial, neofolk and other obscure shit.
And now I noticed that most classic acts from the 80s like Current 93 and Coil all provided reissues of their albums in cyrillic for their fanbase in Russia.

Z'EV is a tricky one.
While some of his work is rhythmic, the most part of it it's acoustic drumming like his singles and the compilation Bust This!
And the metallic/machinery part is often abstract and noisy like Production and Decay of Spacial Relations and Salts of Heavy Metals.
If he only found a way to mix both.
I've always loved groups like the cure, and skimming through everybody's lists has been awesome.
I've been especially enamored by grave wave and other bass and distortion driven sub genres lately.

Industrial metal for journalism and criticism purposes is pretty much anything inspired by industrial that has synth and distorted guitar and drum machines, or anything that sounds like it does, and is on every movie soundtrack from 1992-2004.

Closer guy here again. I gravitated from shoegazing in high school to dream pop to goth, a logical progression in reverse chronology I'd say. Because I was into punk since age 12 and the Ramones are my favorite band ever, the punk-derivative first wave of goth (Bauhaus, Cure, Siouxsie, Joy Division, Specimen, Christian Death, et al) is the strain that moves me most. I am just now branching off a bit into the other subgenres after years so forgive me if certain ones are ill-defined for me. I'm mostly trying out stuff from this current decade.

Carrying on this conversation with a couple more of my wits about me, Catastrophe Ballet you would still objectively have to call death rock. This wasn't really a judgement call thing in the late 70s and the 80s. Unless they were aware of each other and deliberately trying on each other's sounds, if it was from the US it was death rock, if it was from the UK it was goth rock, especially if we're talking SoCal and rural England.

And qualifying my position to sound not quite so extreme, Skeletal Family borrowed a few things from bands like Theatre of Ice, and you could fairly describe them as death rock if you were so inclined. The silly London bands like ASF, I don't know if I would even call them goth rock. Batcave is batcave. I always kind of liked glam rock, the posturing was silly, but I always felt like certain artists used it as a tool. By making themselves so over the top, they got over the importance of image and were able to give the performance they felt.
Having a hard time with you alluding the stones were glam rock. Jagger was a showman, but the stones as a band never really got glam in my eyes. Especially not while they were doing their best work

And the older I get, the more I shy away from wanting to downplay the fashion end of things too. There are undertones of consumerism there, yeah, but it does mean something.
At least where I'm from, anybody showing up in "the uniform" (for the sake of argument, something like jnco jeans and a fishnet shirt for guys, plain little black dress and knee boots for girls), they stand out just as much as somebody showing up in jeans and a T-shirt as not really knowing what they're doing. Dressing how you feel, especially if the outward result is a little outrageous and expensive, just shows you're thick-skinned enough to not mind letting everybody know who you are, and smart and responsible enough to design and buy that shit.

I mean this is a little scene in BFE I'm talking about, and it's a hell of a fashion show. There's a tiny older guy, ridiculously muscular, just wears like wrestling boots and velvet tights, no shirt, and he owns it. Other nights he'll show up in a mourning dress. Another guy dresses kinda steampunk, but has figured out how to take androgyny full-circle and end up hypermasculine. Another guy wears a long women's skirt and a bondage top kinda like Pinhead. The girls go from Wednesday to fairy dresses to flyboy-type outfits with riding boots over aviator pants. Everybody's so different, but you know you're in the right place immediately, and you can tell who'd be worth hanging out with and who's just there to be seen pretty reliably.
