Bump.

Trying to up my jazz game aswell.

So improvisation is just making melodies out of chord tones?
>>

Lol Coxhill
Evan Parker

vigorously ignoring this because what?

Of those artists whose stuff do you like most, least, find most interesting, unpleasant etc..
Otherwise I'm just gonna say Cecil Taylor and Sam Rivers and leave it at that.

Why didn't anybody tell me this was really good?
>>
>>54842944

Pretty much all Miles albums before he went electric are great.
>>
art ensemble of chicago is pretty dope. check out les stances a sophie.

if you are into coltrane I really like Ole. Not one of his more well known releases but that's one of my faves by him.

I've also been into Gil Evans lately. The Individualism is a great start.

np: miles davis - pharaoh's dance :)

Daily /jazz/ threads need to be a thing again. The past two days there were pretty good threads... Hopefully this one picks up.

The drums on this album are so fucking stellar.

I agree, if they don't continue, I'll just go ahead and make them if someone else won't

They would be a daily thing if everyone on this board wasn't posting indie pop/rock all the time. It seems to me like /mu/ only posts about a narrow range of music.

good choice. Also the Lester Young and Oscar Peterson recordings are great.

Do you not remember that crazy guy in one of those threads you linked convinced bop was ruining sharethreads? One of the more out-there trolls I've seen recently.

Ima stop shitting up this thread now though. I'd love to see /jazz/ become a daily thing if there's enough traffic, it's definitely been the best thread on /mu/ recently. There's even actual discussion and stuff! Not much point if the threads become too regular and just 404 though.

Also I feel like we might need a pasta for the OP with a few guides to getting into jazz and essentials lists and stuff.

Good stuff

The only jazz guys I know are Coltrane, Mingus, Adderly, Monk, and Davis

I listened to Pat Methany's album from a few years ago, thought it was good

who do I go to from here?
>>
>>54844666
I find it funny how /mu/ prides itself on liking esoteric artists and niche genres, but at the same time talking just talking exclusively about those same few artists/genres.
>>
I've been enjoying a lot of Charlie Parker lately and wondering why he doesn't get more love on mu.
Mu and most web discussion of music in any genre is intrinsically biased towards discussion of studio albums, with a ridiculous bias against live or compilation albums.
Is this your experience? And what are the best jazz musicians that can only be appreciated through compilations or live albums?
>>
>>54842671
No one ever talks about Wynton Marsalis on here and I don't know why. I guess it's cause he's still alive and making music, and that just isn't as cool as being dead. Dude makes great music. Just bought 'From the Plantation to the Penitentiary' last week and I've been spamming it. It's not as amazing as some of his other albums but I still love it.

Gerry Muligan - Night Lights
Chet Baker

Electric Miles is everything after Miles in the sky
>>
>>54845791
Wynton is a fantastic (if somewhat limited) player. I can't stand his views and outspoken-ness on them though.
>>
>>54845381
pretty much all jazz before 1945 isn't really available in the album format we know. It's probably the main factor in why it isn't discussed much on /mu/.
>>
>>54846316
Arguable. in Miles in The Sky, miles was just staring to experiment with electric instruments. His Electric phase didn't really start until he started recording In a Silent Way.

why do everyone always talk about Les stances à Sophie when it comes to Art ensemble of Chicago ? They made a lot of other great albums
>>
>>54846996
it's a classic and really accessible. I got tuned into these guys through it so that's why I recommend it. Baptizum is another great one as well.
>>
>>54842671
If you liked Brotzmann, try Peter Evans
>>
>>54842901

No that's preparker shit. Now we use modes.
>>
Cedar Walton, Pharoah Sanders
>>
>>54842901
Well "Idle Moments" is in part

Cm7 / Fm7 / G7#9 / AbMaj7

Fm7 G7#9 / AbMay7 / Dmin7b5 / Cmin7
and it's in the key of Eb Major

now Eb Major is C natural minor and has Eb Ab Bb

but G7#9 has a B

so that is not in the key of Eb, nor G7#9 so I suspect G7#9 is a secondary dominat in this case

perhaps...

but we just don't know, but either way the chord is out of the Eb scale so I guess it suggests other scales can be used for improvisation.

I do not know.

What is your album of the month /mu/? Doesn't matter what era just the album you have liked the most this month?
>>
Ahmad Jamal. Anything of his live.
Bill Evans live at village vanguard.
Brubeck a LA mode is wonderful dancey shit. Time out is obviously great.
Art Blakey live at birdland.
Listen to more dizzy always. Have trumpet will excite!
Bud Powell anything. Great Tunisia cover IMO.
Grant green matador for great guitar with McCoy tyner and elvin Jones.
Miles in the sky. Miles smiles. Filles de Kilimanjaro. All stuff of Davis i don't see talked about here. His fusion shit is good shit you need to know this.

Just what I've been listening to for those of you looking for some stuff.
>>
>>54847368
we're only the fourth of the month dude (or still the third depending where you live)
>>
>>54847470
>>54847368
Well for March sorry, i forgot that April had began already. :(
>>
Art Blakey, and listen to the s/t first. A lot of people on /mu/ skip and go straight to Moanin' but the first one is the my favorite jazz album ever.
>>
3:07 min into A.Y.

It's just the stuff Trout Mask opened with!

waaaaaaawow weeeeeeeeeeee waaaaaa FUNK Waaaaaaa

He remained poor all his life? yeah I'm not surprised
>>
>>54847601
I like or at least tolerate most of these guys, but this album was just plain awful to me
>>
>>54844570
THIS

>>54844651
Do it and I will forever call you P, based minister of Jazz
>>
>>54847343

Learn your modes. G7 is built out of C mixolydian. Guess what you play over a G7 chord.
>>
Listening to Fuchsia Swing Song by Sam Rivers right now. I'm into it so far--just on the first track. At the very least I'll get to hear Tony Williams for about forty minutes. GOAT drummer
>>
>>54842901
man, learn to serial and 12 tone, and minimalism. start with sol lewitt.
all are is "here is the limit, the palette, what do i do that makes for a successful work" until it steps out, retracts, explodes, accepts a new palette, forever and ever.
>>
>>54848365
Well I've still the melodic minor to start learning and sight reading to work at as well as a chapter on chord progressions.

modes can wait, as I have the G7 arpeggios in the mean time.

Thanks
>>
ok good musics?

Currently listening to Parker. Such a great saxophonist, The Bird Blows The Blues
is essential if you're looking to get into 40's era of Jazz.
>>54847516
I think The African Beat is a much better album, the drumming on that is just insane
>>54848487
You should check out "Waves" as well, another fantastic album by him.

I struggled for a while to decide which was my favorite coltrane album. i was into ascensions for a bit, i was into a love supreme for a while, blue train is hard not to love but this one just gets me everytie. from start to finish i can't stop tapping along. im basicallly sezing to how goddamn good this album is.it may or may not be my #1 album but it is definitely my desert island album . this album takes me to another wolrd. even greensleeves is reinvigorated. it has the raw energy that i feel like even teenagers could appreciate
>>
is there something like the western version of soil & pimp sessions? really curious because it's the only jazz band I know and I'm trying to get into the genre

>>54845791
He's a good player but I've always found his albums very backwards. He's stuck in the 50s.
>>
>>54848816
I've always felt like that was true of all Coltrane post-Giant Steps. His sound is human and therefore universal.
