I can think of worse genres honestly
>>
The only genre I've ever heard compared to disco is dubsteb, so yeah I'd say it's pretty bad.

Jeff Lynne had a good quote on disco, but even then I'm not sure ELO is enough to redeem it

How much can you progress from it? Are you fucking kidding me? The musical ignorance of /mu/ when it comes to dance music and pop music is fucking ASTOUNDING. I mean, you guys still think that Kraftwerk was the sole reason electronic dance music exists. Protip: House music came DIRECTLY from disco. AND GUESS WHAT? FUCKING HIP HOP IS AN OFFSHOOT OF DISCO. DISCO RAP WAS A THING. LOOK IT UP, DISCO WAS ONE OF THE MOST INFLUENTIAL AND IMPORTANT GENRES TO MODERN POPULAR MUSIC.

I'm glad disco existed because it inspired a lot of good music. Music that took a page from the disco book, and music that reacted against disco. In either case, the world is overall better for having disco innit.

But yeah disco itself is pretty eh... I guess the musicians were pretty tight tho, not like all that sloppy rock/folk shit of the 60s
>>
Only AC/DC fans hated disco.

I imagine people got sick of it still after everyone was jumping on the bandwagon though.
>>
>>54722217
No, it's a patrician dance genre. and against the contrary belief, disco never died, it just went underground again. I would have loved to see and hear djs like David Mancuso, Nicky Siano and Larry Levan do their magic with their turntables... at the Studio 54, The Loft and Paradise Garage. Anyone interested to learn more about Disco, I would recommend the book " Love Saves the Day" by Tim Lawrence, and " Turn the Beat around" by Peter Shapiro. It was only taken off the mainstream due to that "Disco Sucks" daddy's boy of the owner to the Detroit tigers back in the mid 70's.

Ironically, dance music has come back and killed off rock to the point of extinction. Now we have genres that pay homage to disco, with the arrival of french house, nudisco, dream pop, synthwave, and future funk.

it could happen. the tide turns around every once in a while. rock at this point is going through the same thing that disco went through decades ago.

i can only think of Tame Impala, The Black Keys, and Arctic Monkeys as the only significant faces of rock at this point

this is now a disco thread

I like disco because it was like the last dance music made largely with bands. The more jam like, lengthy disco songs are great. But yeah, it's ultimately just cheesy fun, nothing wrong with that though but I can understand the backlash against it from people who wanted more serious music.
>>
>>54723189
you could add Patrick Alavi there, its a mix of disco and big room house. same with Justice
>>
Deathcore is probably worse. No other genre has as many identical-sounding bands. You could literally build brand new deathcore songs using only half-second samples from other deathcore songs, and people would think it's a new deathcore band playing it.

There's even more variation in visual kei, a musical style designed solely to extract money from the wallets of Japanese teenage girls.
>>
>>54723466
I don't think what's happening to rock right now is entirely comparable to what happened to disco. The reaction to disco was more angry and focused, where as rock is just kinda fading away in terms of relevance to popular culture. I think what happened to disco is more comparable to what happened to prog with the rise of punk.

That being said, I feel that it is unlikely for a variation of rock to lead a potential backlash against EDM. Most likely, a form of electronic music that is the antithesis of EDM will form as a reaction to over-saturation. I would predict it to be kind of dissonant and political, but still accessible to some degree. Perhaps something like a more tone-downed Death Grips. I would also expect it to kill off bling and bitches party rap.
>>
>>54722586
But I am le patrician. I don't need to know anything about the genre disco or even have listened to it to know that it is bad.
>>
>>54722586
This. What the fuck /mu/, get your shit together. Disco was extremely important to music as a whole.
>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C2q2bis6eLE

I dare people to listen to this and not think of modern "hip" music today. All that "indie-electronica" that hipsters love so much owe alot to this song.

>>54724389
>>54723466
Rock and hip hop to a lesser extent are victims of the industry overexposing people, and being unable to follow up with "the next big thing".
>>
Disco was okay.
I mean when The Bee Gees come on, something primal and stupid in me gets excited. I don't ever put it on willingly, but now that I consider it, maybe it wouldn't hurt.
>>
Disco gave way to house, so it can't be all bad, and plus there are some pretty legit disco songs. Nightcore/happy hardcore along with arena and anthem trance have my vote for worst genres
>>

I mean, the music is very heavily produced, so I get where you're coming from, but disco is about wanting to dance and fuck people. Kind of hard to be unauthentic about wanting to dance and fuck people.

Disco is essentially pop fused with a bit of funk. It's great party music to dance, do coke, and fuck to. But it lacks enough substance to grow which is exactly why it died.

But yes, there's plenty of bad pop music that's much worse than disco: the bland corporate radio rock that somehow still gets churned out, the histrionic vocals of some love songs that focus on technique over clever arrangement and songwriting...

Yeah, it definitely got a bad rap undeservedly back in the day.

The only thing I don't get is why so many disco producers thought bringing a string orchestra onto the dance floor was a good idea?
I mean Giorgio Moroder's production of Donna Summer's "I Feel Love" is one of the few disco hits that isn't "marred by strings":

Damn straight.

I don't mind strings when a band as adept as Chic puts them to use, but they always seemed musically superfluous - as if they were a signifier for "class" more than making the music "better".

"We need to make people dance! What do we need? Okay: Drums, Bass, Rhythm Guitar, Horns, ....violin? Viola? Cello? Hmmm...."

If I had to choose I'd have left 'em at the philharmonic....

Disco is a genre and as proven in this thread, has was a precursor to dance music and electronica. It had also influenced a great number of artists today and led to a continuation of new genres. Go fuck off back to your metal containment thread before you spout more nonsense.
>>
>>54730214

rednecks started the "disco sucks" movement because the genre was mostly led by black women and gays. they didn't like the fact that blacks were partying and having fun while they worked their shitty blue collar jobs and came home to beat their wives and drink beer. white people always do this when there's a positive form of black music that allows us to have fun. white people are miserable wretched beings.

Disco is fucking dead for good reason.

People now are influenced by it and they actually add a little substance to it by taking pieces of it and letting it inform their songwriting.

It is not culturally diverse music, it is music for middle-aged, white people (especially bands like ABBA)

It was all awful, vapid music. True disco was.

You can make good music that is somewhat influenced by disco, but true disco is dead like Latin and Nu Metal. I hope some of EDM will die as well. There is a reason why EDM's fanbase is mostly made up of douchebags.
>>
>>54726724
The Bee Gees only ever made one true and pure disco album and that one is Children of the World, and it is a very weak album. Main Course, Saturday Night Fever, and Spirits Having Flown are actually more thought out musically and production wise than the average 70s disco song.

Compare songs from KC & the Sunshine Band to the Bee Gees and realize that the Bee Gees were more disco/pop/rock.
