I love how some people give Gesualdo so much credit for being "ahead of his time" with such uncharacteristic polyphony. He was really just undereducated in music, and wasn't that good of a composer. The simplest answer is usually the right one.

All memes aside, this album was decades ahead of it's time. Some of the shit in his album has a scary resemblance to things in industrial, and some metal, decades later. It was doing shit in the 60s that only started to become used in the mid-80s

Clear Light made a couple doom metal songs in 1967 and Kluster was making industrial in 1969/1970 (as in the Throbbing Gristle kind, not the rock kind)
Most groups that people say are ahead of their time are very of their time. Being ahead of your time implies playing music that only became popular years later, not being experimental since experimentation is normal in many time periods.
