I don't know if any of you people care, but I'm a black man and I'm going to explain to you why "The Powers that B" is actually just a much better album than "To Pimp a Butterfly".

The problem with Kendrick's album is simple: It's boring. He's actually just lecturing you in his nasally voice for over an hour. It's not even like he's trying to make some kind of work of art that illustrates the struggle of black people; he's just outright lecturing you about it, the lyricism on the album hardly requires any thought and its entirely straightforward in its message. The whole album is 'booboo' this, 'niggers' that, 'black power' this, 'white cultural appropriation' that. Nearly the entire album sticks on this one subject, barely if ever branching out.

If I wanted to learn about black history or modern day racial tensions, I'd read a book about the civil rights movement or go to a social studies class.

If I wanted to listen to jazz or funk, I've got Miles Davis, James Brown, Charles Mingus, Herbie Hancock and George Clinton (Kendrick's smartest play) for that.

And if I wanted to listen to a 2015 hip-hop album that's enjoyable to listen to and actually tries to push hip-hop as a genre while transcending racial boundaries, "The Powers that B" just dropped. In fact, the subject of racial tension is tackled in a much more amusing and Jocyean fashion on the track "Black Quarterback".

"To Pimp a Butterfly" is an album designed and marketed to be sold to white people. White people will listen to albums where rappers like Kendrick go on about the struggle of black people and how they were oppressed by whites for centuries, and they'll like it because they feel like talking about what a genius Kendrick is on Facebook and Twitter makes them feel more cultured.

Personally, I just don't see how you could actually think Kendrick's album is better unless you're just obsessed with social justice or something.

Fantano has shown on multiple occasions that he doesn't read into the lyrics of Death Grips at all. Kind of funny since that seems to be the entire basis of his reviews of other rap albums. The lyrics of Niggas on the Moon often reads like if James Joyce became a rapper in the 21st century or something.

My older brother used to tell me that when I was an 12 year old kid collecting Stones Throw Records albums, it doesn't mean anything besides that you my friend, are insecure. If you've ever been embarassed to have liked any music at any point in time of your life, maybe you should stop and reconsider why it is that you're listening to it. If you're listening to something just to fit in, you shouldn't be.

Lyrics from Fantano's least favourite track.

>I'm so black quarterback throw off this app by his badge
>Blare my organ for juice spike blonde kinks on my boots
>Approach me licking his fur whining "I demand a word"
>Swine must be the all the way hatched hell yolk raining down his chest
>Clucking so fucking hard glance heartbeat through his vest
>So I'm like, "Go ahead, blood" but my mind's on my wrist
>Five minutes pass I'm a have to make you my piss
>Gimp just kept shaking so I had to braid him like this
>Comfort over freedom, pave a path of leisure have it all
>Freedom over comfort, give you back so much leisure
>Feel small
>Xeroxed man dressed in gauze spider silk and menopause
>Mustache showered with applause squished out packets like taco sauce
>Gather crowd laugh it off Mr. Zogged by your boss

>I'm so black quarterback, air it out, albino Black quarterback in all black he's so white, no I'm so

What a dumb criticism. Why would anyone who loves music limit themselves to six artists to a genre?

>If I wanted to learn about black history or modern day racial tensions, I'd read a book about the civil rights movement or go to a social studies class.

You don't see the value in tackling these issues in music or literature or film? Why do you hate art that examines history?

That's 6 out of many hundreds of artists who can do what Kendrick did better than he did. And I'm saying that if you're going to make music about history, you should use some artfulness about it rather than just lecturing with a nasally voice about it. It gets boring hearing about black people non-stop through the album.

DG's first disc has the word 'niggas' in the title and yet they don't use it once on the whole double lp. Kendrick's album uses it seemingly hundreds of times to the point where I get tired of it. And somehow Ride can say 'Up My Sleeves' 30x in a row and I don't mind because it sounds good on the track.

Yes, and I'm saying that while Kendrick did something I remembering The Roots and Jurassic 5 doing when I was 12, Death Grips have basically created a hip-hop album that sounds brand new and takes influences from a ton of places, while still sounding like none of them in the end. PtB is fresh as fuck, very few albums are sonically similar. And it has some incredible lyrics at some points and just ridiculous and catchy hooks at others.

PtB is just way more fun to listen to for me. I've listened to every track of TPaB a few times, but I can't even make it through the whole album in one sitting. It just tires me out. On the other hand, I've been listening to the whole double lp all the way through a ton of times over the week.

>That's 6 out of many hundreds of artists who can do what Kendrick did better than he did.

Not even most of the people you've listed are really rappers. Kendrick didn't make a jazz or funk album. He made a jazz and funk influenced rap album. We have to appraise the album on its own terms.

TPaB has some nice jams like King Kunta, Alright, Blacker the Berry or i (bogged down by Kendrick lecturing again, and on Mortal Man) but overall a lot of the album sounds preachy and more like a homage to older artists he has learned from. Which isn't really bad, TPaB has solid tracks, but it lacks originality in comparison.

I don't know. Powers is obviously the better album (especially NotM) but I don't see how people can write off stuff like 'How much a dollar cost' or 'u' as just "preaching to white guilt". A lot of it is more introspective of his own faults rather than lecturing about other people's.
>>
Without even looking at messages or whatever, Kendrick's album is cool because of the way it gradually reveals its story (or whatever) over the course if the album. I don't think it lacks in creativity at all, it's a great album that does some original stuff. That being said, DG is just way ahead of everyone. I mean that sincerely, I don't think they can be touched after this latest release. Both albums are great though, and deserve to be listened to and taken seriously.

Why is everyone saying Kendrick's new album is all "fuck whitey"? Theres more about the hypocrisy of black people than there is about the mistreatment of them. It's a great album. That being said The Powers That B is lightyears ahead of it by every means.
